Pop-up Pedigree

Her name was sometimes spelled Baur.2 Her name was sometimes spelled Ottalie Schwengle.3 Her name was sometimes spelled Otillea.4 According to the census of 1880, Ottilia Hübner was born circa 1855 at Prussia.5 Linda Kuehn Veillet offers the birthdate on 20 June 1857 at Posenia, Prussia, but points out that this would have Ottilia and her brother (or half-brother) Theodore born only a few days apart.1,6,7,2,3,4,8 She was the daughter of Ferdinand Hübner and Maria Kranz.5 She was Catholic. She told her children that while growing up in Prussia, she had to learn to read and write (and presumably speak) Polish in order to study Catholicism.9 Ottilia Hübner and Benedikt Bauer's first child, Anthony, was born in 1875.6 She immigrated in 1876.9,4 On 14 February 1876 Ottilia Hübner married Benedikt Bauer, son of Andreas Bauer and Josefa Endres, at Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota. Peter and Cathie Henricks or Henrichs were the witnesses and Catholic minister P. M. Stukenkemper performed the ceremony.10,1,11,12 Bauer-Huebner marriage. Photograph from LDS microfilm by Karla Huebner, July 2005. Their second child, Elizabeth, was born on 3 September 1877 at Minnesota.13,1 Their third child, Mary, was born on 14 September 1879 at Minnesota.14,1 The 1880 census misspelled her name as Oletea Bower.5
Ottilia Hübner and Benedikt Bauer appeared on the census of 1880 at Dwelling #28, Greenwood Township, Hennepin County, Minnesota.15 She was literate as of 3 June 1880.5 Their fourth child, Peter, was born on 13 July 1881 at Loretto, Hennepin County, Minnesota.1,6,8 Circa 1882 both Benedikt Bauer and Ottilia Hübner were members of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Loretto, Hennepin County, Minnesota. The church assessed Benedict $20 in church dues on the basis of his farm acreage. He had only paid $10 and gone to communion twice before he died.16 Ottilia Hübner was widowed by the death of her husband Benedikt Bauer on 23 June 1882 at Greenwood Township, Hennepin County, Minnesota.17,6,18 She was a widow between 23 June 1882 and 30 October 1882.16 She married second Alois Joseph Schwengle, son of Alois J. Schwengle and Theresa Schmatz, on 30 October 1882 at (book 20, 1881-3), Loretto, Hennepin County, Minnesota. The witnesses were Theodor Hübner and Maria Kaiser jr. The Catholic minister did not sign.1,2,19,20 Her name was sometimes spelled Otelia in 1883.21 On 11 January 1883, Ferdinand Hübner sold the land he had bought from his son-in-law Benedict Bauer to his daughter Ottilia for the same price of $100. This may have been preparatory to his moving to Minneapolis.22
Ottilia Hübner witnessed the marriage of Amelia Schandel and Theodore J. Hübner on 18 October 1887 at Hennepin County, Minnesota.23,1,24,25,26,27 Microfilm of Theodore Huebner and Amelia Schandel marriage. From Salt Lake City. The 1880 census listed him as 41, and his parents as born in Baden. Rosshaupten is said to be at the foot of the Alps.3,6,1 He was christened on 3 November 1839 at Rosshaupten bein Füssen, Baden.7,1 He was the son of Andreas Bauer and Josefa Endres.2,1 At Germany, Benedikt Bauer was a "brewmeister," according to family tradition.8 He immigrated on 6 December 1873 to New York, New York. According to Germans to America, 32-year-old Benedict Bauer arrived on the Westphalia from Hamburg via Southampton. His occupation was listed as brewer, so it is fairly safe to assume that this is the correct Benedict Bauer.9 Benedikt Bauer and Ottilia Hübner's first child, Anthony, was born in 1875.10 On 14 February 1876 Benedikt Bauer married Ottilia Hübner, daughter of Ferdinand Hübner and Maria Kranz, at Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota. Peter and Cathie Henricks or Henrichs were the witnesses and Catholic minister P. M. Stukenkemper performed the ceremony.3,2,11,12 Bauer-Huebner marriage. Photograph from LDS microfilm by Karla Huebner, July 2005. Their second child, Elizabeth, was born on 3 September 1877 at Minnesota.13,2
The Midwestern grasshopper plague of the 1870s didn't bypass Wright County. "Slight locust invasions were reported in 1868, 1871 and 1872.
"Wright county was visited again, however, in 1873, when a new horde made its appearance. Although they deposited many eggs here, the next winter, quite severe, killed most of them so that few hoppers were seen in the spring of 1874. They showed up to some extent in 1876 and 1877 but it was in 1878 that the greatest damage was done.
"That year they came in such hordes in the month of April that everyone almost gave up in despair. It was no use to plant, men argued, and nearly all agreed. A day was set aside for prayer, however, in the hope that a divine and kindly providence might intervene. Providence must have heeded their petitions, for the night after the prayer observance a killing frost came that froze every grasshopper as stiff and solid as a stone." Between 1873 and 1878.14 Numerous German immigrants settled in Wright County and became the second-largest immigrant group after the Swedes. Frankfort and Franklin became predominantly German. Circa 1895.15 Their third child, Mary, was born on 14 September 1879 at Minnesota.16,2
Benedikt Bauer and Ottilia Hübner appeared on the census of 1880 at Dwelling #28, Greenwood Township, Hennepin County, Minnesota.17 On 3 June 1880 Benedikt farmed at dwelling #28, Greenwood Township, Hennepin County, Minnesota.3 He was literate as of 3 June 1880.3 On June 8, 1880, a land transaction was filed with no purchase date given. In this transaction, Benedict Bauer of Frankfort, Wright County, sold to Frederick Hebner [sic] of Greenwood, the east half of SE 1/4 of Sec 26 for $100 to have and hold during the natural life of said Frederick Hohene [sic] and his wife, providing he pay all taxes. Theodore Hübner witnessed the transaction. Since the census shows Benedict Bauer living in Greenwood Township at this time, it is puzzling that he is listed as "of Frankfort, Wright County" unless this merely refers to Benedict's postal address. Frankfort was not far from Greenwood Township.18 In 1881 Benedikt resided at Greenwood Township, Hennepin County, Minnesota, He had 160 acres in Section 26 and his post office was in Rockford.19 Their fourth child, Peter, was born on 13 July 1881 at Loretto, Hennepin County, Minnesota.2,10,20 Circa 1882 both Benedikt Bauer and Ottilia Hübner were members of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Loretto, Hennepin County, Minnesota. The church assessed Benedict $20 in church dues on the basis of his farm acreage. He had only paid $10 and gone to communion twice before he died.5 He died of consumption or, per Greenwood County deaths, a "Liver Complaint" on 23 June 1882 at Greenwood Township, Hennepin County, Minnesota, at age 42.21,10,4 He was buried at Sts. Peter and Paul cemetery, Row 12, Lot 4, Loretto, Hennepin County, Minnesota.2,10,22 Photo by Karla Huebner.

Emilie Schandel was also known as Amelia Per Linda Kuehn Veillet, "Amelia [Schandel Huebner] ... for some reason, had a sister named Amelia."2,3,4 Her name was sometimes spelled Emilie Schendel.1,5 Emilie was employed by a large vineyard, picking grapes for wine-making. It belonged to a brewer. "He was very kind and thoughtful. He always carried a jug of wine, which he administered to the pickers when they seemed tired or sick and weak. He constantly warned them to rest occasionally."6 She was also reported to have been born in 1863 at Posen, Germany.6,4 She was born on 12 May 1864 at Germany.1,7 She was the daughter of Wilhelm Schandel and Henrietta Schelling.1 She was Lutheran.6 She was confirmed circa 1877.6 She and Amelia Schandel immigrated in 1885 to Minneapolis, Minnesota.6 She and Amelia Schandel immigrated circa 1886. According to Jim Huebner, they were sick the whole time.8 She immigrated in 1886.1 She and Amelia Schandel immigrated on 13 October 1886 to Baltimore, Maryland. Germans to America lists Mathilde and Amalie Schendel, ages 23 and 19, as arriving in Baltimore from Germany (Bremen) on the Main. Their occupation was listed as servant. The ages are about right; what needs to be discovered is whether Emilie was also known as Mathilde. It seems far-fetched, yet stranger things have happened (like two sisters known as Emilie and Amelia). Perhaps Emilie's baptismal name was Mathilde but she didn't care for it.9,10 Between 1887 and 1891 Emilie and Fred resided at Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota.6 On 21 August 1887 Emilie Schandel married Fred Woehlert, son of Christian Woehlert and Maria Steinborg, at Little Falls, Morrison County, Minnesota.11,2,12,6 On 21 August 1887 Emilie Schandel married Fred Woehlert, son of Christian Woehlert and Maria Steinborg, at Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota.4 She was illiterate as of on 4 June 1900 at Fifth St., Little Falls, Morrison County, Minnesota, However, she could speak English.1 As of on 4 June 1900 Emilie Schandel and Fred Woehlert had five living of five children.1 She and Fred Woehlert appeared on the census of 4 June 1900 at Fifth St., Little Falls, Morrison County, Minnesota.13 She was also known as Amelia Shendler.14 Emilie resided at 500 4th Ave., W. Side, Little Falls, Morrison County, Minnesota.15 Emilie and Fred resided at 500 5th St. and 4th Ave. S.E., Little Falls, Morrison County, Minnesota.6 Emilie was active in the Ladies Aid of the Zion Lutheran church.6 Emilie and Fred resided at 404 2nd St. SE, Little Falls, Morrison County, Minnesota.12 She and Fred Woehlert appeared on the census of 1930 at Little Falls, Morrison County, Minnesota. Ancestry.com. She died on 23 October 1934 at Morrison County, Minnesota, at age 70.3,4 She was also reported to have died at Walnut Creek, Contra Costa County, California.12
