* * * MY NUGENT FAMILY * * *

My Great Great Grandmother is Elizabeth Jemima NUGENT. Not much is known from our parts of the family about the Nugent history. I've been fortunate to correspond with descendants of Elizabeth's siblings through my research. The following is a combination of the research of many of them. There are still many 'maybes' &/or unknowns. If you can verify anything or contribute anything in the way of corrections, photos, stories, etc. be sure to let me know.

Francis NUGENT was born abt 1780, possibly in Co. Cavan, Ireland. He died 18 October 1835 in Hope Township, Ontario, Canada & is buried at St. Mark's in Port Hope (known then as St. John's Anglican). His obituary from the Christian Guardian Paper states "Francis Nugent of the township of Hope, while assisting at the raising of a barn for John Heaton, was struck in his side by a falling log and died the next morning."

His wife Mary was born about 1780, probably also in Ireland. Her name may have been BARRETT, but possibly KELLETT. Speculation about KELLETT is because an 1821 census lists Elizabeth Nugent, age 7, a niece living with David & Jane Kellett in Curracloghan, Lurgan Parish, Co. Cavan, Ireland not far from where Francis age 36 & Mary Nugent & 4 children are living in Edenburt, Lurgan Parish, Co. Cavan, Ireland. His father, William age 66 is living with them & a John Nugent age 50 & family are listed next. Francis & Mary & family came to Ontario about 1826-27. They had 8 children & there are varying stories about how many & which ones were born before leaving Ireland. It is likely that the first 7 children were born in Ireland. From various family notes it's possible that the family left from the port at Londonderry, North Ireland & lived near Millbrook after they arrived in Canada. Mary died February 1865 in Cavan Township, Ontario, Canada.
