Pledge of Allegiance
I pledge allegiance
to the flag of
The United States of America
and to the Republic
for which it stands,
one Nation under
God,
indivisible, with liberty
and justice for all.
Under the United States
Code, Title 36, Chapter 10, Paragraph 172, the Pledge of Allegiance
should be recited standing, facing the flag with the right hand
over the heart. Uniformed personnel should render
the military salute. |
The Pledge of Allegiance
was written by Reverend Francis Bellamy for use at the dedication
of the World's Fair Grounds in Chicago on October 21, 1892. The
wording was slightly altered in 1923 and 1924 by the First and
Second National Flag Conferences. It was officially designated
as the
Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag
by Congress in 1945.
The words "under God" were added
in 1954 in a law signed by
President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
