FAMILY GROUPS
George Hubbard and Bonds Genealogy,
By Arthur M Hubbard - Feb 29, 2000
Categories: Connecticut, Geo H/Mary Bishop
When the discussion of George Hubbard and who he was arises the
most often asked questions are, who were his parents, where did he come from,
who was his wife and who were his children. I offer these questions for all to
participate in answering. I will not attempt to answer any of these questions
now. I wish to devote my time to
sources of information and the importance of providing cites. The example I
will use is the frequently seen reference in the discussion of who was George
Hubbard and his descendants. "Bonds Genealogies and History of
Watertown". I have cited Bonds to
validate my arguments. What information is found in "Bonds when you look
up Hubbard?
P.303-James and Sarah Hubbard had a son Thomas b. August 10, 1638.
P.795-798-George Hubbard and his wife Mary (no last name) lived in
Watertown circa 1635.
The detailed entries begin with George's son John. John's son
Jonathan, his son Major Jonathan who marries Rebecca Brown and their son
Jonathan who marries Abigail Jennison.
Bonds is a legitimate source to cite, it corroborates more
detailed information found elsewhere but in the final analysis the use of Bonds
to authenticate anything about George Hubbard is limited. I have not read Bonds from cover to cover.
This is my interpretation. I have extrapolated from it what I thought was
significant. I believe that it is
important and a responsible act to provide the sources of your information to
allow other researchers to explore them.
Anyone interested can look at the Recipe section of this site
and find additional information about Bonds. I encourage everyone to utilize
the recipe section to start building a bibliography/source guide.

The American Genealogist/Jacobus article,
By Arthur M Hubbard - Feb 5, 2000
Categories: Connecticut, Geo H/Mary Bishop
TAG vol. 10; 1933 - "George Hubbard's wife" by Donald
Lines Jacobus
The statement is seen in many printed works (a) that Mary wife of
George1
Hubbard of Guilford was a daughter of John1 Bishop of Guilford.
The writer
has not found any evidence to bear this out, and is convinced that
the said
Mary was not a daughter of John Bishop.
John Bishop came with the original Guilford company in 1639. The
history of
George Hubbard is different. He came first to Massachusetts, then
to
Wethersfield by 1636, removed 1643 to Milford, CT and 1650 to
Guilford.
Bishop brought a wife and young children with him to Guilford; the
children,
judging by the time they married, were born in the 1630's. Hubbard
had
several children born before he settled in Milford, the oldest
almost
certainly born before 1640. The evidence of the dates would lead
us to
believe that Hubbard and his wife were not much younger than
Bishop and his
wife. The question may be asked, how Hubbard came to acquire a
daughter of
John Bishop for his wife, since Hubbard was a married man while
still
residing in Wethersfield, and his marriage almost certainly took
place prior
to the arrival of the Bishops with the Guilford party in 1639.
All statements to the effect that Hubbard's wife was daughter of
Bishop are
apparently based on the will of Mrs. Ann Bishop, made 12 June 1673,
in which
she gave twenty shillings to her grandchild Elizabeth Hubbard. (b)
Yet this
will itself proves that Mrs. Mary Hubbard was not her daughter.
Mrs. Bishop
gave her eldest son John Bishop 5 pounds above "his equal
proportion with my
other Too children," and she willed that the residue of her
estate should be
divided "Betwixt my three children, viz., John and Steuen
Bishop and James
Steele." Further she called James Steele her son-in-law, and
the inventory
mentioned property in Mr. Steele's hands "which his wife
claims as given to
her by her Mother."
The terms used in the will prove conclusively that Mrs. Bishop had
but three
living children in 1673: John, Stephen, and Bethia wife of James
Steele.
Certainly no sane woman would refer to "my other two children"
and again to
"my three children" if she had at the time four living
children. The joker
in the deck is that Mrs. Mary Hubbard was living in 1673, and did
not die
until 14 Sept. 1676. (c) Therefore, she was not the daughter of
Mrs. Ann
Bishop. And if Mrs. Mary Hubbard was daughter of John Bishop by a
former
marriage, then her daughter Elizabeth Hubbard would not have been
granddaughter of Mrs. Ann Bishop.
It must not be forgotten that not only did George Hubbard have a
daughter
Elizabeth, but Daniel2 Hubbard had married (in 1664) Elizabeth
Jordan, and
that the latter may conceivably have been the Elizabeth Hubbard
whom Mrs.
Ann Bishop called her granddaughter. Elizabeth Jordan was daughter
of Mr.
John Jordan, and original Guilford proprietor in 1639, by his wife
Ann, and
for anything we know to the contrary, Mrs. Ann Jordan may have
been the
daughter of Mr. John and Mrs. Ann Bishop. At any rate, Mrs. Jordan
married
secondly Thomas Clarke and died at Saybrook 1 Jan. 1671/2.
Therefore, she
was not living when Mrs. Bishop made her will; and there is no
objection to
the theory that the Bishops had children who died prior to 12 June
1673 when
Mrs. Bishop had but three surviving children.
This Theory, which would make Elizabeth (Jordan) Hubbard the
grandchild
named in the will, is attractive, and the most serious objection
that can be
brought against it is that the known ages of the Jordan children
necessitate
placing the birth of Mrs. Ann Jordan about a decade earlier than
the births
of the known three Bishop children. That objection is not
insuperable.
However, this should be considered merely as an unproved theory
unless
readers can supply documentary evidence of a more compelling
character than
the bare mention of Elizabeth Hubbard as a grandchild in the will
of Mrs.
Bishop, which may admit of more than one interpretation.
(a)"1000 Years of Hubbard History," pp. 199-200, states
that "with these
migrators [from Watertown, MA, to Wethersfield, CT] went George
Hubbard, his
family , his father-in-law, John Bishop, and his family." No
contemporary
record has been found to indicate that John Bishop ever resided in
Watertown, Mass., or Wethersfield, CT, or that he was the
father-in-law of
George Hubbard; as stated in the text above, he first appears in
1639 with
the Guilford settlers who came direct from England.
(b) Manwaring's Digest of Early Conn. Probate Records, vol. 1, pp.
183-184.
(c) Guilford Vital Records, vol. A, p. 68.
The TAG/Jacobus information with cites can be found in the multi
volume series of The American Genealogist. Many libraries have the series. I
believe the following is the article in its entirety. Another researcher sent
this copy to me but I have looked it up myself in the TAG and do not remember
any editing. Concerning the validity of this article I think it is flawed. Thus
the argument fails. The author demonstrates recklessness and arrogant
assumptions.
I think the flaw in the Jacobus article begins in Para 2- It assumes that John Bishop cannot be the
father of Mary Bishop wife to George Hubbard because of "unmentioned"
dates of birth some known dates of death
and certain events of the period. This is where I believe this article
starts tracking the wrong direction. Mary is traditionally listed as the first
child of John and Anne Bishop. Anne may or may not be Mary's mother. Mary
Bishop Hubbard died in 1675. Anne
Bishop died in 1676. John Bishop who died in d1660 certainly can be the father
of Mary Bishop. I accept the c1605 DOB for Mary Bishop. The following children
of John and Anne Bishop were: Mary, Anne (mJames Steel), John, Stephen, Bethia
b1634-d1676 (mJames Steel b1622-d1675/6), Sarah.
Ref Para 3-No doubt this Will exists and does not name her
children in entirety just her known-surviving children.
Ref Para 4 - This is taking a very large liberty in assuming the
meaning of what Anne Bishop thought or meant in her Will to suddenly prove
conclusively ones own argument. Records have James Steele married to both Anne
Bishop and Bethia Bishop. This could be an error or possibly he had been
married to Anne first and for whatever reason (Anne s death) eventually married
Bethia. It is additionally ridicules for Jacobus to assume that Elizabeth
(whoever she may be, Grand daughter, step grand daughter, grand daughter in law
-see para 5.) could not be refereed to as Grand daughter in the Will.
Ref Para 6-And so, if this is as confusing to you as it was to
Jocobus you might also decide to throw all caution to the wind and recklessly
involve the Jordan family into this only if you adjust their history to
conveniently fit your scenario.
I do not know for sure the answers to who the Anne Bishop Will
refers according to Jacobus. I have not seen this Will. This is something I
will pursue when time allows. Any help will be appreciated. What I do know is
that George Hubbard had a wife named Mary Bishop. Jacobus may not have had
access to some of the research that is now available to researchers. He
certainly was not part of the Internet information age.
This is my analysis; your comments are welcome. I hope this is
clear to you.

I found where MARY BISHOP really figures into the Hubbard lines.
She is not the mother of George Hubbard who married Elizabeth Watts. as is
sometimes reported.
She is more of a contemporary of his and she was married to a
George Hubbard, which may have contributed to all the confusion.
From "The Hubbard Thompson Memorial" a Genealogical Record
and Historical Account of the ancestors and descendants of Ebenezer Hubbard and
Mary Thompson, his wife, compiled and edited for Ellen Hubbard Skinner and
Lillian Kimball Stewart, published in 1914, we find:
George Hubbard died in Guilford (CT) in January 1683. His will, on
record in the Probate Office of New Haven, has a codicil dated May 23, 1682, in
which he stated that his life had been prolonged, and devised a room in his
house to his daughter Elizabeth. The inventory of his estate was taken May 30,
1683. George Hubbard's wife, MARY, daughter of John BISHOP, one of the original
proprietors of Guilford, whom he married in England. She died Sept. 14, 1675.
George and Mary were survived by eight children: Mary, John,
Sarah, Hannah, Elizabeth, Abigail, William and Daniel. Children:
Mary was married in 1647 to John Fowler, a Deputy Magistrate and
deacon of the church at Guilford. She died in 1713.
Sarah, born in Wethersfield in 1634, was married to Daniel
Harrison of New Haven, and went to Newark, New Jersey.
Hannah, born in Wethersfield in 1637 married Jacob Melyen, son of
Patroon, Cornelius Melyen of New Haven in 1662. They removed to Boston, where
she died in 1717.
Elizabeth, born in Wethersfield in 1638, was married late in life
to Deacon John Norton of Guilford.
Abigail, baptized in Milford May 26, 1644, was married in 1657 to
Humphrey Spinning of New Jersey.
Daniel, baptized in Milford May 26, 1644, married Elizabeth
Jordan, and died in Guilford in 1720. His grandson, Daniel, was one of the
wealthiest men of New England, and at his death in 1751 left an estate valued
at more than 20,000 pounds. (we have no English pound sign on our keyboards,
sorry).
William, youngest son of George and Mary (Bishop) Hubbard, married
Abigail Dudley, and settled in Greenwich, CT.
The grave of George Hubbard was in the Guilford cemetery, south of
where the soldiers' monument now stands in the center of the Guilford village
green. This cemetery was not used after 1817, and the gravestones were removed.
An interesting relic of George Hubbard is still in existence (remember, this
was pub in 1914) in Guilford and has never been out of the Hubbard family. It
is a linen chest brought by him from England. it is made of oak, is about four
feet high and two feet deep, with a crude scroll work embellishing the front.
The wood, all except the panels, is two inches thick, and is held together with
wooden pegs. It formerely opened at the top, but a...... (that's where I run
out of this document, sorry.)
Some of you are indeed descended from this George Hubbard.
HOWEVER: this is not the George Hubbard who married Elizabeth Watts. This one
married Mary Bishop. These 2 couples were in the same basic generation. If you
have them listed in a father/son family scenario, expunge this now.

I am looking at the Thousand Years of Hubbard History (pub in
1895) and there are MANY Hubbard emigrants who began "family lines"
in New England. As a for-instance, here
is what the book has (condensed by me) on a JOHN HUBBARD of Pomfret, CT.
This material was given to us by Joanne Benne who names the
source: Genealogies of Woodstock
Families by C.W. Bowenand completed by Donald Lines Jacobus.
John Hubbard was in Boston about 1670. Married Rebecca (Wells?)
and removed to Roxbury, MA.
Children: Rebecca &
Rachel were baptized as good-sized children April 11, 1686.

Coralynn: Thanks for your emails.
I finally had the time to set down my family history through my great-
great grandfather. I know the history
is rather large ( 8 generations), but it might be of some interest for someone.
I am not going to repeat, in detail, the family history related
directly to George and Mary, as the information that you, Arthur, and Tracy
listed under Extensive history of Hubbard Family concurs, for the most part,
with mine.

Continuing Hubbard Issues,

Two responses I have made to recent posts at this site:
The George Hubbard conundrum will continue but I can offer the
following. There is allot of information available to the serious researcher
that clearly defines the different families. There are allot of haphazard
information gatherers that over the years and currently have muddied the
waters. Some of the most common problems encountered are the use and reuse of
the same first name for cousins and second cousins etc. and the use of a popular
name for the time period. There is also the reuse of the same first name for a
child where the previous child by the same first name died. Marriage of sisters
and brothers to sisters and brothers in another family is common. And just when
you thought you had it right out pops the second marriage scenario and if that
dose not drive you nuts the boundary lines of Colonies and States changed.
As for George Hubbard-Elizabeth Watts buried at the Middletown CT
and George Hubbard-Mary Bishop buried in Guilford CT. There is evidence to
support that in 1635 both George Hubbards left Watertown(MABayCOL) in the same
exploration party(sixty men, women and children) for CT. I do not know if they
were related. They were not father and son. It can be speculated that they may
have been cousins but I do not know this. I have found one reference that
connects them by marriage.* Elizabeth Watts brother Thomas Watts marries
Elizabeth Steel whose brother James Steel marries Ann Bishop sister of Mary
Bishop. This of course makes Elizabeth Watts Hubbard and Mary Bishop Hubbard
distant sister in laws. This relationship I am sure is one of the contributing
factors to the confusion relating the two Georges.*1YK of Hubbard History note
on bottom of p270/another source says it was not Anne Bishop but another sister
Bethia Bishop that marries James Steel, It makes little difference for the
points being made here.
George Hubbard b England circa 1600 d Guilford CT 1/1683 marries
Mary Bishop b1605. They immigrated with two children Mary and John b circa 1630
in England, to the Massachusuts Bay Colony 1633. John is placed in the care of
the George and Susan(Raven)Merriam family. The Merriams' have a daughter named
Mary b1634 Concord MA who eventually marries John Hubbard 1648/9 in Hatfield MA.
They eventually have a son named Isaac who maries Anne Warner. Now, remember
George Merriam. He was the son of William
and Sarah(Burgess)Merriam. George had two brothers, older brother
Joseph(b1600-d1640) and younger brother Robert(b c1610 in Kent,Eng-d Feb 15,
1682 Concord,MA). Robert Merriam married Mary Sheaf(e) b circa 1620-d1693. Mary
Sheafe Merriam was Mary Merriam's aunt. As a side note John Hubbard had a
brother named Jonathan who married Hannah Merriam sister to Mary Merriam
daughter of George and Susan and niece to Robert and Mary(Sheafe)Merriam.

This is a very, very long entry.
If I run out of space, I will continue it in a part 2. This information is well documented (I would
need an entire entry just for the documentation) and gives info on 6 or 7
generations. It gets very unwieldy
therefore, but hang in there. If I put
this all on familytreemaker (haven't decided yet) and learn HOW to upload it to
a website, I could do that. No
promises, though.

Notice how they recycle the same first names over and over and

their ancestors challenging!!
Extensive history of Hubbard Family, (Geo/Mary Bishop),

Hubbard GLEANINGS
I found where MARY BISHOP really figures into the Hubbard
lines. She is not the mother of George
Hubbard who married Elizabeth Watts. as is sometimes reported.
She is more of a contemporary of his and she was married to a
George Hubbard, which may have contributed to all the confusion.
From "The Hubbard Thompson Memorial" a Genealogical
Record and Historical Account of the ancestors and descendants of Ebenezer
Hubbard and Mary Thompson, his wife, compiled and edited for Ellen Hubbard
Skinner and Lillian Kimball Stewart, published in 1914, we find:
George Hubbard died in Guilford (CT) in January 1683. His will, on record in the Probate Office of
New Haven, has a codicil dated May 23, 1682, in which he stated that his life
had been prolonged, and devised a room in his house to his daughter
Elizabeth. The inventory of his estate
was taken May 30, 1683. George Hubbard's
wife, MARY, daughter of John BISHOP, one of the original proprietors of Guilford,
whom he married in England. She died
Sept. 14, 1675.
George and Mary were survived by eight children: Mary, John,
Sarah, Hannah, Elizabeth, Abigail, William and Daniel. Children:
Mary was married in 1647 to John Fowler, a Deputy Magistrate and
deacon of the church at Guilford. She
died in 1713.
They removed to Boston, where she died in 1717.
(we have no
English pound sign on our keyboards, sorry).
William, youngest son of George and Mary (Bishop) Hubbard, married
Abigail Dudley, and settled in Greenwich, CT.
The grave of George Hubbard was in the Guilford cemetery, south of
where the soldiers' monument now stands in the center of the Guilford village
green. This cemetery was not used after 1817, and the gravestones were
removed. An interesting relic of George
Hubbard is still in existence (remember, this was pub in 1914) in Guilford and
has never been out of the Hubbard family.
It is a linen chest brought by him from England. it is made of oak, is about four feet high
and two feet deep, with a crude scroll work embellishing the front. The wood, all except the panels, is two
inches thick, and is held together with wooden pegs. It formerely opened at the
top, but a...... (that's where I run out of this document, sorry.)
Some of you are indeed descended from this
George Hubbard. HOWEVER: this is not the George Hubbard who married
Elizabeth Watts. This one married Mary
Bishop. These 2 couples were in the
same basic generation. If you have them
listed in a father/son family scenario, expunge this now. .

Extensive history of the Hubbard Family (the HOBARTS),
By Coralynn Brown - Nov 17, 1999
Categories: HOBART info, Hubbard GLEANINGS
I have obtained a lot of authentic genealogy recently, much of it
very well documented. First: I am
coming to the conclusion that the Hobart family and Hubbard family were not
exactly one and the same. The group
that settled in Mass tended to spell the name Hobart, whereas the ones who
settled in CT wrote Hubbard.
First, let us dispense once and for all the erroneous parentage
given to George Hubbard b. 1601 in SE England who married Elizabeth Watts. His parents are not known.
The ones you see printed on some other websites were real people
and I've even found them, but they were in other family configurations, not
George's.
The first group I found on a Hobart Genealogy (on Rootsweb)
Edmund Hobart b. 1572/73 in Hingham, England, married Margaret
Dewey in 1600 in England. He died
3-8-1645/46 in Hingham, MA. Margaret

I HAVE MORE on THIS LINE, and if it looks like one of yours, let
me know, but......I THINK YOU GET THE IDEA already. These are Hobarts; not once did I see the name spelled
Hubbard. If these names were used for
one family, and you have proof, let me know please. I think they very well might have been separate families
altogether.

Coralynn's line (George Hubbard/Elizabeth Watts),

Newest information: NO one
knows who the parents of George Hubbard (b. 1601) were. Never mind what you see
on other genealogy websites; they are well meaning, but wrong. Everything you
see in print is not necessarily true, and, I may add, especially when it comes
to genealogy. I have emailed with
people who spent a lot of time on this snafu only to realize that all current
data are wrong. So, expunge the parents
you may have written down as either:
George Hobart & Mary Bishop
Edmund Hobart & Margaret Dewey
Don't go down that road.
Don't waste valuable time on proving one or the other is correct. They
are both wrong.
Hope your pencil has a good eraser!!! Coralynn

"My Wife Elizabeth Stiles was the oldest Daughter of Col. John HUBBARD of

Her parents had trained her well for the "Variety of Business of
female Life." They married and had eight children. She was an honest woman, "perhaps
unexampled for her Love of Integrity."
Her religious devotion included private prayer, reading the Bible
"thro' 5 Times," raising her children carefully and various good
works. Speaking to his intended audience,
Stiles remarked, "it will be an honor to her Posterity to have decended
from such an excellent Person"

Possible origin of the surname HUBBARD,
By Coralynn Brown - Nov 12, 1999
Categories: Historical
I lifted this from a Hubbard query board verbatim. This answer to the age-old question of where
the name came from is supplied by Mike Hubbard, who has no idea I stole it from
him. Thanks, Mike!
In the book "One Thousand Years of Hubbard History",
published by Harlan Page Hubbard in 1895, the name is attributed to "Hubba
the Viking". Hubba's father,
Ragnar Lodbrog, was captured and thrown into a pit where he was eaten by
snakes. (??) In 866, Hubba and his
brother Hingua landed on the coast of East Anglia or Kent to avenge the death
of their father.
Winston Churchill mentioned Ragnar Lodbrog in his book "A
History of the English Speaking People" Volume One, The Birth of Britain,
pub in l956. He wrote of Ragnar's four
sons, Bjorn, Hvitserk, Sigurd and Ivar.
Ivar was supposedly the mastermind of the invasion of England. Which of
the four would have been "Hubba" is the question. (Coralynn's
comment: I vote for Ivar.)
At
any rate, the name evidently comes from the Norsemen (Vikings) and has been in
England from about 866 to the present day.
