Delight thyself also in the Lord; and He shall give thee the desires of thine heart. - Psalm 37, verse 4

THE O'LOUGHLINS AND GORDONS OF COUNTY CLARE, IRELAND AND TRENTON, NEW JERSEY

Isabelle Gordon was born in Ireland in 1872 to either Robert or Henry Gordon and Ellen McCloskey Gordon.  She came to Trenton and lived on Prospect Avenue, working as a housemaid.  On October 3, 1890, in St. Mary's Cathedral in Trenton, she married Michael O'Loughlin. Witnesses were Michael Lefey and Maggie Gordon.  Michael was a 22-year-old laborer who lived at 176 Lamberton Street.  His parents were Michael O'Loughlin and Delia Morgan.  All four parents had been born in Ireland.

Isabelle was quite a character.  She was a good friend of Francis Cardinal Spellman of New York City.  We think they may have been related in some way.  Perhaps they were cousins.  During World War II,  there had been no word from Uncle Mick (Isabelle's grandson) for some weeks.  Local politicians and the Red Cross were no help.  Isabelle got on the phone to Cardinal Spellman at St. Patrick's Cathedral in the city.  Within two hours Uncle Mick was calling home from Iran or India, where he had been in the hospital.  She knew how to work the system!

This is a picture of Gramma Bella in later years. Too bad we don't have one of her when she was young and sassy! Isabelle and Michael had several children:

Michael John,  b May 25, 1895 Trenton, d Jan 29, 1957 Trenton, buried St. Mary's
Patrick F, d Feb 5, 1976
Robert, d Sept 29, 1940 Trenton, buried St. Mary's
Margaret (Maggie), d May 2, 1961.  She married James McGroarty and had a son and a daughter.

Michael John was born and died in Trenton.  He married Bertha E Hohmann, born Fallsington, Pa and daughter of Franklin Hohmann and Mary Crist.  Mary was born in Wisconsin. Bertha was said to have descended from a Hessian soldier.  She loved making gingerbread houses for her grandchildren whenever they had a birthday.  Billy kept his until it was so stale Aunt Helen couldn't break it apart.  Michael was a veteran of WWI and was a professional roofer. They had the following children:

Michael John,  b July 17, 1918,  d  1968, married Irene Nath.
Michael John O'Loughlin III?  maybe the tenth?
