THE MOORES OF NEWTOWN, LONG ISLAND AND HUNTERDON COUNTY, NEW JERSEY

The Reverend John Moore was an immigrant from England and the child of John Moore of Croghan, King, Ireland when he settled in New England at the age of twenty. In 1644 he moved to Southampton, Long Island. In 1646 he completed his studies at Harvard College. The same year he obtained a license to preach the gospel, although he was not permitted to administer the sacraments. In 1652 he moved to the recently formed Newtown, Long Island and became the first minister in the village. He went back to England during the winter of 1655-56, probably to receive ordination. He died the same year. He had married Margaret Howell and had several children including Gershom, born 1646, who married Mary Wright. Gershom and Mary Wright also had a son named Gershom who was born about 1668. Gershom Jr. married Deborah Betts and had a son, Samuel in about 1698. Samuel's son Jonathan was born about 1720. Jonathan's son was Josiah Moore, born April 23, 1747. He married Mary Lake. From here on we're documented by my grandmother, who made notes of these people!
