John is being summoned by the court to answer contempt issues on the estate objected against him by Samuel, Mary Ann, and Margaret. To appear 8 December (crossed out September) next. Issued 9 September 1766. John filed the inventory and accounting for the estate Dec 1762 - about 3 years after Jacob's death (the estate went to probate 7 Dec 1759. 3 years is a pretty long time especially since the estate wasn't that large or complex.) This case was filed nearly six years after Jacob's death. It must have been the case that John Howey had filed (and signed) the final accounting but never actually delivered the share of Jacob's estate to Joseph and Eleanor's children. Perhaps there was some bad blood since Eleanor had remarried. Perhaps John was unreliable or a even a scoundrel.6 |
