I've compared the signature of John Howey on the probate of Jacob Howey of Abington in 1749 and am pretty confident this is the exact same person who signed the Wills of Abraham Howey of Sussex in 1773 and John McKee in Sussex in 1772. It is NOT the person who signed the will of Robert of Burlington in 1793.

JOHN THE IMMIGRANT

     John Howey, an early colonial immigrant from Ireland, was the ancestor of most of the Howey families of Pike and Monroe counties and to some extent, those of Luzerne and Lackawanna counties.

     The early records of theprovince of Pennsylvania portray a Howey family which emigrated from Ireland to America in the early 1700Ùus, probably not later than 1730. They entered America at Philadelphia and settled in townships around the city. In these early records, various spellings of the surname occur-Hoey, Houey, Howay, Houwy, Howey.
     This immigrant family of brothers and sisters consisted of:
     Jacob - wheelwright; did not marry.
     Joseph      - wheelwright; married twice; had 4 children.
     John - wheelwright, yeoman, land speculator; apparently married twice; had 8 children.
     Elizabeth Hoey Patten - apparently married twice; had 6 children.

     The records indicate that the men were educated beyond elementary schooling, and were sufficiently well financed to be able to acquire property and live in comfortable circumstances in America. It appears that all were of the Presbyterian faith. Jacob and Joseph were members of the Presbyterian Church in Abington in 1736 where Joseph appears in the marriage records as well as later in baptism records of his children. Elizabeth and John appear in the marriage records. John also appears as one of several grantors who donated a tract of land to the Presbyterian congregation of Tinicum.

     All family members, except John, remained in townships near Philadelphia until their death. John, on the other hand, headed north into the sparsely settled region beyond the Water Gap, acquiring property in 1738 along Big Bushkill Creek. In the following 40 years the records place John in Abington, Smithfield, Tinicum, Mt. Bethel, Lower Smithfield, Middle Smithfield, and Delaware townships. To minimize confusion he will hereinafter be referred to as John the immigrant.

     Evidence of the physical presence of John the immigrant and his first wife, Margriet Molhallon in the Bushkill area emerges with the 1745 baptism of their first son, John, at the Reformed Dutch Church located in Walpack, New Jersey just across the Delaware from now Bushkill, PA. Three later children, including Boudwyn, b. 1749, were baptized at the Smithfield, PA Congregation of the Walpack Church which was located in the area where Shawnee Village now stands. The last baptism was daughter Jezebel in 1752.

     In 1755, Indian raids devastated the pioneer settlements along the Big Bushkill. Among the many homesteads burned was that of John Hoey (sic). For more than a decade after this disaster we found no records of activity by John Howey in the Bushkill area.

     The account of the Indian raid did not include John HoeyÙus family among those killed so we conclude they survived. Later records support this conclusion. On the other hand, records of the decade following the Indian attack include numerous events involving John Howey in the area of Tinicum, Bucks County, supporting the conclusion that after the raids he fled to safety there. These records confirm this John Howey as John the immigrant of Abington. Since the earlier John Howey of the Bushkill area was also of that family, the conclusion is that John of Tinicum and John of Smithfield was the same person, John the immigrant. Again, later records bear this out.

     Prior to the Indian attack, the records of the Abington Presbyterian Church include the marriage of John Hoey (sic) and Jane Morrison in 1754. We surmise that JohnÙus first wife, Margaret Molhallon, died sometime after the birth of Jezebel in 1752.

     In the years from 1755 to 1760, John Howey the immigrant fathered 4 (perhaps 5) children, all born in Tinicum. The children named in a family bible were: Jean Howey, Born August 22, 1755 John Howey, Born February 10, 1757 Jacob Howey, Born October 9, 1758 Mary Ann Howey, Born January 19, 1760
As will be explained later, one of the sons is in the direct line of descent to many Howey families of northeastern Pennsylvania.

     In the late 1760Ùus John the immigrant again begins to appear regularly in the records of the Bushkill area. His son, Boudwyn, also appears in many of these records which include land, tax, and military records (Boudwyn only) in Northampton County until 1781 after which no further record of John the immigrant appears. He does not appear in the 1790 federal census so we surmise he died between 1781 and 1790.
     Over a span of more than forty years from 1738 to 1781 the record shows John Howey engaging in land speculation; writing, witnessing, and executing wills; paying taxes; and fathering 2 families, one in the Smithfield/Bushkill area; the other in the Tinicum/Bucks area.

     Although the records of his presence are numerous, we found no death or burial notice, or any other direct evidence of his passing. We have found no document of inheritance although later records suggest that property was passed to his son, Bowdewine of Delaware Township. Despite the fact that many of the recorded events were land transactions, we have never found him in a transaction involving the original 100 acre tract on the ÙSFlat Bush KilnÙT which John Howay obtained by warrant in 1738.

I agree that nothing directly ties someone described as John Howey from Tinicum, wheelwright with the Abington Howeys but I think there is sufficient evidence to conclude so.

A) Signatures
There are 3 signatures for John Howey that I feel can be considered to be the same and tie the families together
1) The Dec 1762 signature of John Howey on the probate of the estate of Jacob Howey of Abington. In his will Jacob named Joseph and John brothers. This ties John directly to the Abington Howeys
2) 16 Sep 1772 signature of John Howey on the will of John McKee of Oxford, Sussex, NJ. McKee named Abraham Howey his trusty friend in this will. Along with John Howey, wheelwright of Tinicum, John McKee was one of the named sellers of land to the Presbyterian Congregation on13 Apr 1767. Also McKee and Howey co-witnessed the will of William McLeroy in Nockamixon, Bucks, 6 May 1765.
3) 2 Sep 1773 John Howey witnesses the will of Abraham Howey of Oxford, Sussex, NJ. Since this Abraham Howey is undoubtedly the same as the Abraham earlier in Abington signatures 2 and 3 also tie John, wheelwright of Tinicum to Abington.

Now the question is how do we tie John Howey, wheelwright, of Tinicum to John of Smithfield, yeoman.
1) Yeoman conveys the meaning of a farmer who owns his own land. John clearly bought and sold land so certainly could have qualified as a yeoman. Probably just about everyone farmed so this may have been meant more to convey "landowner" than anything. In any case, I don't find this so significant as to believe a wheelwright could not also be called a yeoman.

2) We have a pattern of land sales and purchases that show land being sold in Bucks and being purchased in Northampton.
He gets the land warrant in Mt. Bethel in 1765. He sells land in Tinicum on 1767. I know this is oversimplified but to me it shows the possibility he moved. It also seems at least possible that Mt. Bethel and Lower Smithfield Twp. may have overlapped. Ed- do you know the details of the history of local naming and the historical township and county boundaries? Lower Smithfield Twp. doesn't even exist today does it? It appears Mt. Bethel originates in what is now northeastern Northampton Co and Lower Smithfield would have been in what is now southern Monroe Co.

**Here's what I feel is the key record:
John Howey, yeoman, late of Bucks Co., executor of the will of Jacob Howey, late of Abington Twp., deceased. John Howey is being summoned based on a complaint filed by Samuel, Mary Ann, and Margaret Howey to render a full and accurate accounting of the estate of Jacob to the Justices of the Peace. To appear Monday 8 September next. Issued 9 Jun 1766. Bucks Co. Orphans Court record.

This means John Howey was no longer living in Bucks by June 1766.

This record alone ties John Howey of Bucks to Abington AND to a John Howey known to still be living in June 1766 and no longer living in Bucks. I've seen no evidence to make me believe the John Howey in Smithfield is not this same person as was in Bucks.

Your thoughts and any clarification of the Mt.Bethel/Lower Smithfield boundary would be appreciated.

We have a number of events where John of Tinicum, wheelwright, is directly connected to the Howey family of Abington, PA. Despite a heavy preponderance of events involving a John of Smithfield, yeoman, none that I know of connects that description directly to the Howey family of Abington.
But here is a possibility: John Howey witnessed Abraham Hooey's Will in 1773. I have charted all the events I have found involving a John Howey, and after 1769, there are none in Tinicum, but there are numerous events involving John in Smithfield up until 1781. Is this enough to believe that John who witnessed the Will of Abraham was John of Smithfield? Do you know of any other clues that would strengthen that conclusion? If the conclusion is correct, then this event connects John of Smithfield to Elizabeth Patten Hooey of Oxford/Abington, and John of Smithfield and John of Tinicum become the same person as they seem to be.

This record compiles all the known facts on those by the name of John Howey in PA or New Jersey during the 1700s that cannot be definitely connected elsewhere. As of 1 Sep 2002 it appears to me this could be as many as three different people, perhaps just two. In any case the ship captain appears to me to be a distinctly different person.

It is doubtful whether the township was laid out under this petition, for we find that in June 1748 the inhabitants of Dansbury (4) and Smithfield petitioned the court for a township "to extend from the river Delaware along the mountains to a gap in the same through which the road from Mimicker's [McMichael's*]to Nazareth goes, from thence northerly to a large creek commonly called Bushkill, down the same to the Delaware, to the place of beginning."²⁰

That entry shows the name John Howey written in the left margin. It was not clear what role the person named in the left margin played in the transaction.

"The inclosed is a List of the Persons killed, and of the Houses Burnt on the Upper parts of Northampton, as near as I could collect, which may [be] depended upon as authentick; for I have strictly enquired of the Particulars, and chuse rather to deminish than add - The barbarous and bloody Scene which is now opened in the above Place is the most lamentable that perhaps ever appeared; -- there is no Person who is possessed of any Humanity, but would commiserate the deplorable Fate of those unhappy People: There may be seen Horror and Desolation;-- populous Settlements deserted;--Villages laid in Ashes;--Men, Women and Children, cruelly mangled and massacred; -- some found in the Woods, very nauseous for want of Interment: Some just reeking from the Hands of their Savage Slaughterers, and some hacked and covered all over with Wounds. -Samuel Depuy seems to be very near being in the same deplorable Condition, and will unavoidably share the same Fate with his Neighbours; for the fatal Blow is impending. - on his applying to Mr. Stewart and myself, we raised a fine Company of Men to go to his Assistance, and when we arrived there, we were informed that Broadhead's House which is about five Miles further up, was surrounded and besieged by the Indians: Upon which we marched to his relief, and escorted him and his Effects to Depuy's, with what Cattle and Provisions we could find in the Neighborhood. - We continued thereabouts four Days, and all the while heard nothing but Outcries and Alarms, and our Centries were fired upon by some Indians hovering about Depuy's House, which may be deemed a sure Prognostick of its Destruction. John filed the inventory and accounting for the estate Dec 1762 - about 3 years after Jacob's death (the estate went to probate 7 Dec 1759. 3 years is a pretty long time especially since the estate wasn't that large or complex.)
This case was filed nearly six years after Jacob's death. It must have been the case that John Howey had filed (and signed) the final accounting but never actually delivered the share of Jacob's estate to Joseph and Eleanor's children. Perhaps there was some bad blood since Eleanor had remarried. Perhaps John was unreliable or a even a scoundrel.⁶⁶

In the name of God Amen this ____teenth Day of February An. Dom. 1748/9. I Joseph Hovey of the Township of Abington & County of Philadelphia being sick and weak in Body but of sound Mind & memory and ____________ do make and ordain this my Last Will and Testament. First of all I _____ and recommend my Soul into the hands of Almighty God that gave it humbly beseeching & hopeing for the most Gracious acceptance of it through the mediation of the Lord Jesus Christ my only Saviour & my body I commend to the Earth to be decently Buried at the Discretion of my Executors hereafter to be named. And as for my Worldly Goods which it hath pleased God to bestow upon me in this life, I give and dispose of them in the following manner viz.
Imp. (Latin for First, I believe - RTH) my will is that all my just Debts & funeral Charges be duly paid.
Then, I give and bequeath unto Eleanor, my beloved wife one Feather Bed, with its Furniture, one cow which she shall choose and all the (flax?). Item, I give and bequeath unto my Daughter, Rachel all her mothers Cloathes and Forty Shillings in Money to bear Interest from the Date hereof till she arrive (?) of age to receive it It being a Legacy of my Father intrusted with me for her. Item my will is that my Land within the Forks of the Delaware be sold by my Executor as soon as may be and to best advantage for the use of my beloved wife and Children and I do hereby give my Executors presently to be named full power and authority to sell and dispose of said Land and make and Execute such Deed or instrument of conveyance as shall be needfull & requisite for that purpose. Item I give and bequeath the money _____ from the Sale of my Land aforesaid Together all my Estate in Good (line missing here?)Chattels not before bequeathed unto Eleanor my beloved wife and unto my beloved children Rachel, Maryan (now I see why this was transcribed as Morgan---RTH) , Samuel, Agnes & Margaret to be equally divided Between them save to my said wife two Shares which I hereby Bequeath, unto her with the use, Interest and profit arising or accruing from the whole to assist her in the Education of sd. Thomas Wetherill of Burlington obtained Warrant from the Council of Proprietors for 2117 acres of land to be surveyed to him in Western Province of NJ below the Falls of the Delaware dated 7 May 1737.

Thomas Wetherill assigned over to Samuel McCullock, of Gloucester, yeoman, 508 acres of this land of this land on or about 25 May 1737.

Samuel McCullock on 20 Apr 1739 has the quantity if 67 acres of the land in part of this same surveyed to him situate in the County of Gloucester on a branch called Faraways is bounded as follows: Beginning at a Pine corner and running from thence across a Brown Pond below the swamp SE 34° 13 chains and 50 links unto a small black oak sapling from thence up the swamp NW 41° 25 chains unto a Pine Corner from thence SW 75° 15 chains to a post in George Ward ? line thence along his swamp SW 5° 24 chains to a post thence down the swamp E [no degrees listed] 23 chains to the place of beginning containing in the said bounds sixty seven acres of land and cedar swamp.

And whereas William Rawle obtained a Warrant from the Council of Proprietors for the quantity of 625 acres of land in the Western Division of the Province of New Jersey below the fall of the Delaware dated 5 May 1737 and the said Rawle did assign over to George Ward Junr. late of Deptford in the County of Gloucester, above said yeoman, the full quantity of 425 acres of land out of the same on 3 Apr 1739 and the said George Ward Junr. had part of his land surveyed to him viz., the quantity of 63 acres of land on 22 April 1737 situate and lying in the County of Gloucester above said on a branch called Faraway and is bounded as follows Beginning at a post being in a corner of Samuel McCulloch's swamp and run from thence SW 73°? 35 chains unto a corner tree from thence across the swamp SW 15° 13 chains unto a corner tree from thence NE 87° 35 chains unto a post from thence across the swamp NE 5° 24 chains to the place of beginning containing 63 acres of land and cedar swamp and the said George Ward Junr. sold the same 63 acres of land unto Samuel McCullock for consideration of the sum of 20 pounds lawful money of the Americas and George Ward Junr. did die before a deed of conveyance was by him given or granted to the said Samuel McCullock for the said 63 acres of land aforesaid but the said George Ward Junr. before he died [maybe dec'd] made his will and therein did authorize and fully empower his executors therein named to give and grant a deed for the said sixty three acres of land which was granted and given by a deed of conveyance to John McCullock eldest lawful son of the said Samuel McCullock (who died before the deed was given) by James Cooper, surviving executor of George Ward Junr. After the decease of the said Samuel McCullock late of the Township of Gloucester and County of Gloucester and province aforesaid, yeoman, decd. did by his last Will and Testament therein did devise and unto John McCullock his son and heir at law the abovementioned two tracts of land and Cedar Swamp containing 130 acres of land and cedar swamp with other lands as by the said Samuel McCullock will dated the 7th day of June AD 1748 relation being had it will at large appear. Whereas the said John McCullock did by his deed indented bearing date the 21st day of March 1754 grant and conveyance Richard Cheeseman Senr. of the county of Gloucester and province aforesaid, deed the above described two tracts of land and cedar swamp containing one hundred and thirty acres of land and cedar swamp.

Whereas the aforesaid Richard Cheeseman Senr did by his deed of conveyance and grant and sell unto John Carter Jun and John Howey party to these presents the before mentioned two tracts of land and cedar swamp containing the aforesaid 130 acres of land and cedar swamp as by the said deed bearing date the 19th day of October 1757 relation being thereunto it will more fully & largely appear.

Now this indenture witnesseth that the said John Howey party to these presents for and in consideration of 25 pounds proclamation money to him in hand paid by Jeremiah Carter the receipt whereof the aforesaid John Howey doth hereby acknowledge and therewith to be full satisfied contented and paid have …. Unto the said Jeremiah Carter and to his heirs….John Howey hath now at the ensealing and delivery of these presents hath lawful and absolute authority to grant bargain and sell the aforesaid one half and equal share of the abovementioned 130 acres of land unto the aforesaid Jeremiah Carter and to his heirs and assigns forever and that he the said John Howey is lawfully and rightfully seized in his own right in the said one half and equal share of the abovementioned 130 acres of land of a good absolute and indefeasible estate of inheritance in fee sample and the said John Howey for himself his heirs…

in the Year of our Lord 1749. I Jacob Hoey of the Township of Abing-
ton County of Philadelphia & Province of Pennsylvania Labourer
being of good Health of Body & of perfect Mind & Memory, but Calling
to mind the Mortality of my Body & not knowing the Time of my
departure out of this Life. Do make & ordain this my last Will &
Testament: Principally & first of all I give & recommend my Soul
into the Hands of God that gave it, & my Body I commit to the Earth

Estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in this Life, I give devise
& dispose of the Same in the following Manner.
Imprimis It is my Will that all of my Just Debts & funeral Charges be paid

mare, Saddle my Wearing Apparrel, my feather Bed & furniture
together with all my working Tools of every kind.

This ninth day of December Anno Domini one thousand seven hundred and sixty five, I, William Eaken, of Noxamixon Township, in Bucks County, and province of Pennsylvania, Yeoman being weak in body but of perfect mind and memory and calling to mind the mortality of my body and not knowing the time of my departure out of this life, do make this my last will and testament.

In manner and form following and principally and first of all , I commit my soul to God who gave it and my body I commit to the earth to be buried in a Christian decent manner at the discretion of my executors not doubting but at the general resurrection to receive the same again by almighty power of God. And as touching such worldly estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me with in this Life, I, give and dispose of in the following manner and First my Will is that all of my just Debts be duly paid and discharged, Imprimis, I give and bequeath to my beloved wife, Ishabel Eaken the bed and furniture that She now uses and occupies. Then, I, give and bequeath to my daughter, Jean, a chist (sic) of drawers, to be given to her at her marriage or when she arrives of age. Then, I give and bequeath to my daughter, Ishabel, the chist(sic) of drawers that is in my possession, my aforesaid (contraction) wife to have the use of them until Ishabel arrive of age or married. And further, my will is that the improvements whereon I now live, together with all my personal Estate be Sold as soon as may be to the best advantage not to exceed five years from my decease and whatever cost my Executor in _ in building, refencing. However (?) planting orchards and letting out(?) a __________ or my Land in order to make the best advantage in Sale, my Will in that such costs and expenses be paid of the whole and further my Will is that in Care(?) my estate whether real or personal should transfer or be diminished before the time of Sale my executors shall not enjoy the benefit of the Care(?), nor sufficient amount of the _____ (?) There was a contract between Isaac Howey and John Howey to sell the property at the time of Isaac's death. John sought relief from the New Jersey state legislature to authorize Davis to fulfill the contract. An Act of the Legislature dated 12 Nov 1807 authorized the sale. The property was 63 acres 2 roods 16 perches on the road from Swedesboro to Oldman's Creek situate in Woolwich, Gloucester Co. Sale was completed on 4 Apr 1808 for one dollar. A further sum of $250 was paid. Part of the land was that sold by Issac Richman, wife Rachel and William Mulford on 13 Sep. 1806. Sale recorded 11 April 1808. Deed also mentions children and heirs at law of Issac Howey deceased. They are Mary Howey, Benjamin Howey, Rebecca Howey, Isaac Howey, Ann Howey, Hope Howey and Martha Howey.¹⁷

He enrolled 9 May 1864 to serve for 3 years.He was discharged 7 July 1865 in Louisville, KY under provisions G.O. NO 27 Dept , KY 1865. John was wounded at th e Battle ofAtlanta.
1872 In behalf of his father, Peter, signed the Feb.Orphans' Court document distributing the residual estate of JohnHowey of Lehman.¹

Notes for John (of Lehman) Howey

     John (of Lehman) Howey was born in New Jersey about 1778 He came to Pennsylvania as a young child, probably under 5 years of age, and lived for the rest of his life in what is now Pike County. In about 1805 he married Mary VanWhy, daughter of Henry VanWhy, and they had 9 children including the Great-grandfather of the writerÙus generation, Peter Howey.
     As stated previously we believe the father of John (of Lehman) was John (b.1757), son of John of Smithfield and his second wife, Jane Morrison. We have identified him as John Hooey/Howey of Oxford, NJ. He is the half brother of Bowdewine of Delaware Township, PA. We surmise that when John (of Oxford) died in the winter encampment of WashingtonÙus army he left behind a 2 year old son, John (of Lehman), who may have become an orphan. The child, and perhaps his mother, then came into the care of either Henry VanWhy, neighbor and fellow-soldier of John (of Oxford); or possibly, of JohnÙus brother, Jacob, who had moved to Oxford some time before 1783.
     The records show that in the 1780Ùus, Henry VanWhy moved his family from New Jersey to Lower Smithfield in Pennsylvania which adjoined Delaware Township where Bowdewine Howey lived. We can be confident that this is the same Henry VanWhy who served in Captain Luce's Company because he named a son Israel Shreve VanWhy after the commander of the 2nd NJ, Israel Shreve. We surmise that at this time the child, John (of Lehman), and perhaps his mother, were delivered to the care of Bowdewine, his uncle.
     In the census records for 1790 and 1800, the household of Bowdewine Howe(y) includes 3 young males, the oldest being several years older than the other two. We believe these are John (of Lehman, b. ca1778), and the 2 sons of Bowdewine, Robert (b. ca 1785), and William (b. ca 1790). These 3 Howey men appear consistently in later records of Pike County and its earlier identities for the first 50 years of the 1800Ùus. John of Lehman first appears by name in the 1810 census where he is listed as Head of Household living next to Robert Howey, also Head of Household. The only other Howey household in the area is that of John Jr. for whom we have found no connection to Bowdewine of Delaware Township, but it is likely that one exists.
     From 1810 onward John (of Lehman) Howe(y) appears in every Pike County census to 1860. For the last 40 years of his life he lived on the 9o+ acre tract on the Big Bushkill which came to be called Howeytown. Earlier the tract had belonged to his cousin Robert, and before that to his uncle Bowdewine, and before that, probably to his grandfather, John of Smithfield.

     John of Lehman died in 1869 but we have found no record of his death or place of burial except for the mention in the Milford Herald item on the death of his wife, Mary VanWhy. We have found a record of the sale of his assets and distribution of his estate to his heirs. Except for Peter, all of the children of John and Mary remained in the Pike/Monroe area raising large families.

To the Honorable Judges of the Orphans' Court of the County ofPike: The petition of John Heller, Administrator of all andsingular the goods and chattels, rights and credits of JohnHowey, late of theTownship of Lehman, in the County of Pike, deceased, respectfully represents:
That he was duly appointed, by your Honorable Court,Administrator of said estate, that as such action has been had on the entire estate and has filed in your Honorable Court a final account which has been duly confirmed absolutely. That the balance remaining as shown by said account he has paid to the heirs of the said decedent and that the releases of said heirs for their distributive shares is hereto annexed. Your petitioner therefore prays your Honorable Court that he may be discharged as said Administrator. And as in duty bound will ever pray.

She is the beloved wife of John T. Howey, Sr. and loving mother of John T. Jr., Scott M. (Camille) and Jeffrey R. Howey. She is the dear sister of Clark Moss, Clara Oorlog, Joyce Hoover, David Moss and the late James W. Moss, Jr. Mrs. Howey was predeceased by her dear parents James W. Sr. and Malmyra B. Moss. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Catherine was formerly the Cafeteria Manager at Gloucester City High School and currently managed the Cold Springs Preschool Cafeteria. She was a Past President of the Gloucester City Fire Dept. Ladies Auxiliaries where she was involved with the Softball Marathon for the Burn Foundation and Firemen's Blood Bank. Catherine had also been involved with the Gloucester City Little League, Mustangs, PTA, GHS Lions Booster Club, Girl Scouts and had been a member of the Cape May Emerald Society and the Moose Lodge.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend her viewing Friday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 PM and again Saturday from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at the ETHERINGTON-CRERAN FUNERAL HOME, 700 Powell St.in Gloucester City.
Catherine's funeral service will be held Saturday, 11:00 AM at the funeral home with interment to follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Gloucester City. In lieu of flowers her family has requested memorial donations be made to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, 5005 LBJ Fwy., Ste. 250, Dallas, TX 75244 or the Burn Foundation, 1201 Chestnut St., Ste. 801, Phila., PA 19107.

Of Sussex 1782

In the Name of God Amen, I Robert Howey in the Township of Hardwick, County of
Sussex and in the West Division of the Province of New Jersey, being weak of
body but of perfect mind and memory Thanks be to Almighty God, And knowing the
uncertainty of this mortal life do make this my Last Will and Testament,
Imprimis, I resign my soul into the hands of my Heavenly Father that gave it me,
as for my body I do order and request my Executors hereafter named to bury it in
a Christian Like manner, and as it Pleased Almighty God to bestow on me some of
the good things of this life, after my just debts and funeral charges be paid---
Item I give and bequeath unto my well beloved wife Martha Howey all her apparel
and ________?________horse and side saddle and a cow and furniture for a room,
and one half of the remaining part of my moveable estate, Item I give and
bequeath unto my brother Daniel Howey the sum of twenty shillings, Item I give
and bequeath unto my brother William Howey the sum of ten pounds, Item I give
and bequeath unto my nephew, Abraham Howey the sum of five pounds, Item I give
and bequeath unto Joseph Howey (son of my nephew Abraham Howey) the sum of five
pounds,. Item I give and bequeath unto my brother Jonah Howey the sum of five
pounds and suit of white clothes, Item I give and bequeath unto Robert Howey
(the son of my brother Jonah Howey) the sum of five pounds, Item I give and
bequeath unto Robert Howey (the son of my brother William Howey) the sum of ten
pounds and my brown suit of cloths, Item I give and bequeath unto John Lowrey

ten pounds and also four acres of bogg meadow that lays in my plantation in
Hardwick, Item I give and bequeath unto Clark Lowrey the sum of ten pounds, Item
I give and bequeath unto Martha Beer (the daughter of William & Mary Beer) the
sum of five pounds, Item I give and bequeath unto my dearly beloved wife Martha
Howey (the use and benefit of the Plantation we now live on as long as she
lives) and after her decease, I give and bequeath the same benefit of said
Plantation unto Martha Beer (the daughter of William and Mary Beer) as long as
she lives, but if she should have any children the said Plantation is to be for
the use and benefit of said children but if she should die without issue then
William Beer the son of William and Mary Beer shall have the benefit of said
Plantation to him and his heirs forever, Item I do constitute and appoint my
trusty friends Thomas Vanhorn Esq. And Matthew Lowrey my Executors to see this
my last Will and Testament be duly executed, and I do revoke and disannul all

Edward M. Howey Jr., 56, of Gordo, Ala., passed away on Oct. 1, 2007.

Born and raised in Woodbury, Ed moved to Gordo, Ala., in 1996.

Ed was a former partner in the Mione Mfg. Co. in Mickleton. In Gordo, Ala., he worked for Peco Foods, Inc.

His father, Edward M. Howey Sr., preceded him in death.

Survivors in Gordo, Ala., include his wife, Janis Hunter Howey, formerly of Woodbury, daughter Audrey Howey and grandsons Jordan, Ian and Xander. In Woodbury, Ed is survived by his mother, Lillian Howey, sister and husband, Cam and Benny Banks, and his nephew R. Ledden Rosato.

Eddie was laid to rest at the Big Hill Baptist Church in Gordo, Ala., on Oct. 5, 2007.

I, William Howey of the Township of Deptford County of Gloucester and State of New Jersey being weak in body but of sound disposing mind & memory; and calling to mind the uncertainty of life, do this fifth day of the eleventh month in the Year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty two make and ordain this my last Will and Testament as follows, to wit

1. I desire that my Executors herein after named pay all my just debts and funeral charges and that they may be enabled so to do, my Will is that they make sale to the best advantage they can for my whole Estate real and personal; The remainder or residue thereof to be disposed of in the manner as follows viz.

2. To Ann my Wife I devise the whole of the residue or remainder of my Estate after my debts are paid, during her natural life, (?) at her decease my will is that what may then remain shall go to my children viz. Mary Ann Miller, Moses Howey, Abigail Ward, and Rebecca Hewitt Howey to be equally divided among them share and share alike.

3. To my daughter Rebecca Hewitt Howey I give a Bed and Bedding equal in value as near as may be to those heretofore given to my children to be taken out of my Estate before any sale thereof is made.

4. To my other children viz. Joseph Howey, Hope Huston, William Howey & Robert Howey, I give five Dollars each.

5. And lastly I constitute my beloved Wife Ann, my son Moses Howey and William Ward Executors of this my last Will and Testament.
