BEGINNING YOUR JOURNEY

Remember: What, Where, When, Why and How

In general, begin your research by gathering the names and information from family members of your siblings, aunts, uncles,  parents, grandparents and so on.  Then use those names to get information from Vital Records - State Index, or you can go to any Search Engine, like Infoseek or Google and type in 'vital records'.  Check out our page of Vital Records Sites.  Click here for access to other sites and interaction groups.  Here are a handful of things to look for and begin collecting:

In addition to searching through Census Records, there are generally records such as family Bibles, genealogical files and obituaries from your local library.  Church organizations like The FamilySearch™ Internet Genealogy Service, of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.  They also have local Family History Centers found under Churches in the Yellow Pages.  They can also assist you with addresses of organizations.  Document every piece of information you get in detail on data sheets, a good one can be obtained from these Family History Centers.  Do this in detail. Write it so that years later anyone can immediately find that information again.

Do not trust these sources as completely accurate and keep in mind that all information should always be proven against Official documents.  Official documentation isn't always entirely accurate or complete, especially older records.  Therefore, document everything possible.  Just a side note, this is supposed to be fun so have fun with it.
