John Michael Horsch and Henrietta Schmidt

John Michael Horsch was born in Baden, Germany on December 24, 1824. He came to America sometime before 1853. Henrietta Schmidt was born in Nassau, Germany in September 1831. John and Henrietta were married on May 22, 1853 in Boston, Massachusetts. They had five children between 1854 and 1864.

John enlisted in Company M, 4th Heavy Artillery Regiment Massachusetts on August 20, 1864. Company M was stationed on garrison duty in the defenses of Washington, DC during the entire time of service. The regiment was mustered out of service on June 17, 1865.

John returned to Massachusetts, and they had seven more children after the end of the Civil war.
