Carl Herrmann Horsch and Fanny Littlefield


Carl Herrmann Horsch was born on July 23, 1822 in Eythra, Saxony, Germany, which is about six miles from Leipzig. His parents were Johann Gottfried and Christianna Friedericke Horsch. Carl H. Horsch studied medicine for six years in Prague, and graduated in September 1848. He entered the Saxon army on October 1, 1848 as an assistant surgeon in the field hospital. He served during the war at Schleswig-Holstein.

In 1853, Carl secured a position at a hospital in Boston, and travelled from the port of Bremen on the ship Albert. After a nine-week voyage, he arrived in New York City on March 14, 1854. He settled in Boston, where he praticed medicine for a year.

He left Boston and went with a German friend to South Berwick, Maine where he spent several months learning the English language. He moved to Dover, New Hampshire in August 1855, and established a practice there.

He married Fanny A. Littlefield in March of 1858. Their first daughter, Lenna, was born in October of 1858.

After the Civil war had broken out, Carl enlisted in the army on January 20, 1863. He was commissioned as a surgeon in Company S, 15th Infantry Regiment New Hampshire. He spent several months in New Orleans working on the wounded soldiers. He mustered out on August 13, 1863 in Concord, New Hampshire.

Carl and Fanny's second daughter, Henrietta, was born in August 1864.

Carl Horsch died on September 22, 1891 at his home in Dover, New Hampshire.
