Johannes Horsch and Lydia Landes


Johannes Horsch and Lydia Landes lived near Wurzburg, Germany duing the mid-1800s. Lydia Landes was born in Albertshausen, Germany in 1830. Johannes and Lydia were Mennonite, and because of their religious convictions, one of their sons, Michael M. Horsch, emmigrated to America to avoid military service.

Michael was born in Waldmannshofen, Bavaria, Germany in 1872. In 1888, when he was 16, he traveled to Bremen, and sailed on the ship, Elbe, to America. He arrived in New York on September 25. He lived in Kansas, where he went to school. He married Tillie Detweiller in Kansas in 1894. He became a minister in the Mennonite religion, and was the first Pastor of the First Mennonite Church in Upland, California.

One of Johannes and Lydia's daughters, Katherine, married Johann Funck in 1897. Johann Funck had children from a previous marriage. In 1890, Johann and Katherine Funck emmigrated to America with their nine children, and Katherine's brother, Jacob. They also travelled to Bremen, and sailed on the ship, Elbe. They arrive in New York on April 29, and travelled to Kansas, where they stayed for a few months until they finally they settled in Oklahoma.

Jacob Horsch married Elizabeth Lichti in 1893. They moved to California sometime after 1904.
