1747 In the name of God Amen /
June the third day 1746, I being weak in body yet in perfect mind and memory
blessed be God for it, do bequeath my soul to God who gave it and my body to the
earth to be buried in a decent way and manner at the discretion of my Executors
- and for what worldly goods as it hath pleased the Lord to bless me with, I do
dispose of in manner and form following my last will, during the time of her
widowhood, and then Andrew Morrson and John McDowell-- Imprimis I bequeath to Mary
my beloved wife the third of all my goods and chattels.
Item, I bequeath to my well beloved son John my estate, only one third
part on the side of run next to John Thompsons to my beloved wife to dispose of
to one of my daughters at her pleasrure (sic), the estate and all debts to be
paid from the whole head of these effects now on the place, and the rest of all
my goods and effects to be divided among the rest of my children viz: Margaret,
Hellon (Helen), Mary, Jean, Elizabeth, Abigail, Sara at the discretion of my
Executors, I revoke and disannull all former wills and testaments by me formerly
made, and I do constitute and appoint this only to be my last will and testament
given under my hand this third day of June 1746-- In the presents (sic)

Co. Court House At an Orphans Court held at
Lancaster for the County of Lancaster the Eighth day of August 1751 - Before
Emanuel Carpenter, James Whithill, James Galbraith, James Foster and James Smith
Esquires - Justices ----- James McDowell------Mary
McDowell Widow and Executrix of James McDowell ---deceased --Exhibited and
Inventory of Goods and Chattels of the deceased amounting to 67 pounds 1
shilling and 11 pence and being about to remove with her Family to the Colony of
Carolina and her children desirous that she should have the Guardianship over
them and their Shares of their said late Father's Estate.
The same is taken into consideration and it being made appear the the
said Mary is a discreet and prudent Woman and fit to be Intrusted with the
Guardianship of her said Children and that her Removal is Intended for the
Benefit of her Family. It is
adjudged by the court that she have the sole Guardianship over the persons and
Estates of John, Margaret, Helen, Mary, Jane, Elizabeth, Abigail and Sarah
McDowell her children by the said James McDowell deceased and that Thomas Black
and David Shields her Bail be discharged. She
has further by the Sales of the Plantation and Effects exhibited final account
of here Administration--Wherein she acknowledges to have in her hands the sum of
exactly Two Hundred and Sxity five Pounds. Note:
The above named James McDowell (deceased) and Mary, his widow,are the
parents of Elizabeth McDowell who married Col. Samuel Watson.
Appendix A Will of William Wattson

-made 23 Aug 1769 In the name of God Amen I
William Wattson of Hanover Township Lancaster County and Province of
Pennsylvania Farmer, being sick of body but of sound and disposing mind and
memory do make and publish this my last Will and Testament in manner and form
following that is to say I
commend my soul to Almighty God and my body to be decently buried as my
Executors shall seem meet. I hereby
require all my Just Debts to be apid out of my Real and Personal Estate. I give and Bequeath to my beloved wife, Sarah, her thirds out
of such parts of my Estate Real or Personal as she shall think fit.
Next I bequeath to my sons Samuel and William Wattson the sum of Ten
Shillings Each and I give and Bequeath to my son Hugh Watson the sum of one
Hundred and fifty pounds Pennsylvania Currency and also a Good Horse Saddle and
Bridle. I also Bequeath to my sons
David and Patrick Wattson the sum of one Hundred pounds each.
I also bequeath to my daughters Eleanor, Mary, Martha, and Ann the sum of
Ten Shillings each. I also Bequeath
to my daughter Margaret Kennedy otherwise Wattson wife of Alexander Kennedy the
sum of fifteen pounds and as to my daughter Jane I Bequeath her one horse and
two cows to the value of Twenty pounds or money in Lieu therof as my Executors
shall think fit and the sum of five Pounds and one Bed and Bed Clothes and I
hereby Subject my Real and Personal Estates to the payment of the several sums
herein before mentioned. The money
to be raised by sale therof or otherwise as my Executors Shall think fit and as
to all cterplus (sic-?surplus) that may arise out of my Estates over and above
The Several Sums of money herein Before mentioned I hereby Require that the same
may be disposed of as my Executors shall think fit and I hereby constitute and
appoint my Beloved wife Sarah Wattson and my son Hugh Wattson Executors of this
my Last Will and Testament hereby Revoking all former wills by me made in
witness wherof I have herewith Set my hand and Seal this twenty-third Day of
August in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and sixty nine. Witnesses:
