John Elmore Holmes obtained his law degree from the University of Mississippi and later he taught law there for four years as chair and Professor of Common Law. He resigned the chair practiced in Hernando, MS in partnership with his brother, Hon. Frank Clark Holmes (of Hernando, MS) for several years then moved to Memphis in 1910 and started a partnership with Canale that later became the partnership of Holmes, Canale, Loch, and Glankler (now Glankler Brown). He served as E. H. Crump's attorney. In 1929 he was appointed to the Court of Appeals at Jackson, Tennessee and later served as Special Judge on the Tennessee Supreme Court.
