Edna Doris Harris Madrin

Doris waited until her mother died to get married. She married Jimmy Madrin in a Berkley church on 6/23/1934. The Madrins first lived in an apartment a block from the family home on Poplar Ave. Uncle Jim worked for the gas company. Eventually they saved enough money to build their own home.

Doris and Jimmy lived in Granby Shores in Norfolk. Dad remembers that there was a big wooded area near their home, and he used to be told that wolves lived in the woods. When interstate 64 was being planned, it turned out that the Madrin's home was in the path of this new road. When a surveyor came to their house to talk with them, Doris cried and pleaded that they find another path. Turned out that they chose another route a few hundred feet before Gramel Street to build the road.

Dad remembers that Doris also had red hair like him. She and my grandfather used to like to sit and tell jokes back and forth. She and Jimmy had a dog named Nicky. For many years, the family would gather at Doris's home for Thanksgiving dinner. Aunt Alice lived with Doris after Alice's husband died.

Doris did needlepoint, covering her dining room chairs with colorful flowers surrounded by dark royal blue wool. She also made samplers and afghans.
