Annie Harris Diehl

Annie Harris married August Peter Diehl from Pennsylvania on 1/20/1915. During their Army days, they were stationed in Panama, Germany, and other places. They were members of the Officer's Club. They had one child, Dorothy Virginia Diehl (b. 1917). Dorothy married Robert H. Denton 11/1947.

Dad remembers that Aunt Annie always took time out from socializing with the other adults to talk to him about things that interested him. He remembers their house on Trueville Avenue in Norfolk. A sign at the front of the house said Journey's End ~ The Diehls. Every January they would invite the family over to celebrate their wedding anniversary. Uncle August was particular about people being prompt. If lunch was to be served at noon, you'd better be sitting down at the table at noon. There was a big garden in the backyard, and a fish pond.

Wilbur Palmer wrote these thoughts about Aunt Anne: "She loved to garden, after her husband retired from the army. (He retired as a Major.) I believe she belonged to a flower garden club; she entered a white gardenia in a flower show. Aunt Anne lived in Panama on the Pacific side two different times when her husband was stationed there before WWII. In Panama she bought room-sized, tan oriental wool rugs.  She would get down on her hands and knees and wash them with a damp towel. She could make an excellent fruit cake."
