State of So Carolina
Personally appeared before me Capt Wm Smith and made oath that the written payroll as it stands stated is right and true to the best of his knowledge sworn to before me the 18th of April 1782.
John Thomas Jr
NOTE: South Carolina did not have the money to pay their soldiers during the revolution, so they promised payment in slaves that were to be confiscated from Tories after the war. This was not found to be practical, so instead, lands in the Cherokee acquisition of 1777, on the north side of the Saluda River, were offered at ten dollars per hundred acres, payable in these debts due from the state.
