Burial place of James Harlan:
A researcher recently visited a rural Harlan Cemetery in Illinois.  She says:
It is a tall slender tombstone that states "James Harlan, member of Co. C. 120 Regt. O.V.I.
Died at Mound City, ILL Dec. 2, 1864, aged 26 Y, 5 M, 6 D."

Ashland County CW Vets :   James HARLAN died 1864, buried Harlan Cemetery

On the net there is a site listing cemeteries for Ashland County OH.  It seems that a memorial stone was put up for James in the Harlan and Wilson Cemetery in Vermillion Township. It says James died 1864 at age 26 in the Civil War. His parents are buried there too.
http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Estates/3129/files.htm

It appears that James and Samuel of this company were cousins.

HARLAN, Samuel *    13 Aug 1862
Sergeant Samuel Harlan, age 21 at enrollment, died 5 Feb 1863 at Young's Point, Louisiana.

The Roll of Honor in the back of the Roster book says he was buried at Vicksburg, Mississippi.
----------
When a soldier died in the war, a pension could have been applied for by his widow or his parents.  I haven't found a pension record in the index for Samuel.

1860 Census Ashland County OH, Mifflin Township page 187 [dwelling next to James Harlan shown in section above]:  Daniel Harlan, age 51, a farmer born in Ohio [see marriage above]; Elizabeth, age 49 born in Ohio; Daniel, age 21, a laborer, b. OH; Samuel, age 19, a carpenter's apprentice, b. OH; Sarah A., age 16, b. OH; Amanda, abe 14, b. OH; Mary, age 10, b. OH; Franklin, age 7, b. OH

Although Samuel was probably first buried near Young's Point LA where he died, his body was moved after the war to Vicksburg Mississippi.  But since his name is not listed at the Vicksburg site, he probably was buried there as an "unknown".  Many of the soldiers who were buried had markers that did not survive, so when they were reinterred the records survived but there was no way to indentify the individual graves. Sometimes their family back home would put up a memorial stone for the soldier.
A researcher says that there is a memorial sentence on a tombstone in the Mifflin Cemetery in Mifflin, Ohio.  "Mary Dau of D. & E. Harlan Died Dec 5, 1864, Aged 4 Y, 5 M, 3 D."
After that it states:  "Samuel Harlan, 20 Regt. O.V. I.  Died at Youngs Point, LA Feb 5, 1863."  (The picture looks like it says an 8 instead of a 3 and the stone may have been misread as 20 rather than 120th.) The researcher believes this one is the son of Daniel and Elizabeth Harlan and they have added this memorial statement to that tombstone.  The researcher didn't take these pictures but it appears that those sentences might be on the back of the same tombstone that is for Daniel and Elizabeth Harlan.  The researcher thinks the following statement is on the other side of the bottom of that same tombstone:
"Daniel Harlan, Died Mar 3, 1877.  Aged 67 Y, 8 M, 28 D."  Then a line.
"Elizabeth, Wife of D.Harlan, Died Feb 7, 1889,  Aged 76 Y, 4 M. 22 D."

In 1850 Census Vermillion Township, Ashland County OH page 415:  Jane STEAL, age 26 OH is living with Edward [55 England]  and Catherine [48 PA] DALTON.  Also living there, besides the DALTON children, are Elizabeth STEAL age 3 OH, and John STEAL age 2 OH.  [This looks like the Jane STEEL who married Christopher HUBER. Her maiden name was DALTON.  So when she married Christopher HUBER, she was Mrs. Jane STEEL.  Elizabeth and John were her children with Henry STEEL.]

This is odd.  Where is Christopher before and after the war?    Why was Jane HUBER living alone with her children in 1860?  Christopher Huber is nowhere to be found, but we know from the Civil War pension papers that he served out of Ohio and was living after the war in Minnesota.

1860 Vermillion Township, Ashland County OH, page 145:  Jane HUBER, age 35 OH, farm manager;  Elizabeth STEELE, age 13 OH;  John STEELE?,  age 12 OH; Franklin HUBER age 3 OH.  [This census record shows the combining of the Jane STEEL family with the HUBER family.]

In 1860 there are other HUBER children living with another family in Ashland County.  Are these Christopher's children from his first marriage?:
Vermillion Township page 144:  John [67] and Sarah [62] McQUILLIN had living with them Anna S HUBER age 13 OH; Sarah J, age 11 OH;  Minerva, age 8 OH.

Webmaster note:  I believe it to be untrue that all his children were over 16 in 1871.  See Franklin HUBER in the 1860 census and the 1870 census.

In 1870 Census Vermillion Township, Ashland County OH, page 851: Franklin HUBER is age 12 OH, living with James [27 OH] and Elizabeth [age 24] ATTERHOLTE.  Is this the Elizabeth STEELE from the 1860 census above?  The age would fit. [James F. ATTERHOLT is listed as an Ashland County Civil War verteran buried at Hayesville Cem.  And thanks to researchers James Tracey and Lynn Sewell, we now know that this Elizabeth is the daughter of Jane STEEL HUBER.]

Also in 1870 we find a Mariah HUBER, age 15 OH living in Loudonville, Ashland County living with John [60] and Elizabeth [56] BOWERS.

Marriage CertificateThe photo is of the marriage certificate of Christopher HUBER and Elizabeth HART in Minnesota.  It seems that Christopher went up to that state soon after the war.  The photocopy was provided by contributor Debbie F.

After I first found the Pension index information below, I looked for Christopher in Minnesota.  Here is what I found.:
1870 Census, Two Rivers Township, Morrison County, Minnesota, page 580: Christopher C HUBER, age 50 PA, a farmer; Elizabeth, age 24 MI, keeping house.

Pension index information:  Christopher HUBER, Co C 120th OVI.   Invalid filed in 1866, but no state was given.  Then in 1889 June 7 [ hard to read] widow Elizabeth BLOOD applied for widow's pension in Minnesota.

Widows Pension  It has a pension office stamp with the date 22 May 1890.  Affidavit of Jacob Woll, neighbor.  Filed by J. I. Donohue, St. Cloud, Minn.
General Affidavit  [Given by Jacob WOLL, a cousin of the soldier]
State of Minnesota, County of Stearns
In the matter of Orig. Widows Pension of Elizabeth Blood, widow of Christopher C. Huber, late Co. C, 120th Ohio Inf.
Personally came before me, a notary public in and for aforesaid County and State, Jacob Woll, age 62 years, citizen of the city of St. Cloud, County of Stearns, State of Minnesota, well known to me to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who being duly sworn, declare in relation to aforesaid case, as follows:
I was a cousin of the late Christopher C. Huber, late sgt. Co "C" 120 Ohio Inf. Vols. and I knew his first wife personally and I know she died before the war. but it is so long ago and my memory is poor.  I cannot recall places and dates.  I know Christopher C. Huber married again after the war in 1866 I think:  to Elizabeth Hart and lived with till he died in 1871.  He had no children now living by the last marriage.  I believe claimant had children by his first wife but I believe they were all over 16 at the date of the soldier's Christopher C. Huber's death.  Christopher C Huber died at Two Rivers, Morrison Co. Minn. July 26th 1871 of Bronchitis.  So the attending doctor told me.  I know he the claimant was sick all the spring and early summer with his bronchitis and died from it as stated.  I know the above facts from personal knowledge.  I attended the funeral of the soldier Christopher C Huber.  He was buied here in the St. Cloud Cemetery.

WINBIGLER, James   22 Aug 1862
His name is listed but Roster says he never joined the Regiment.

There are 3 James WINBIGLER'S in Ashland County.  One was born <1858> so we can eliminate him.  One was born <1841> and James K was born <1844>.  But I have no evidence yet which one of those two is the right James.  The soldier did apply for an invalid pension in OH in the 1880s so we know he was officially a soldier with rights to a pension.  James P WINBIGLER, born 1841, is listed as being in the Union Army in the 1910 census.  James K. is not marked in that column as being in the Union Army.  So I am researching James P, born 1841 for now.
