Estate Papers of Jacob Steel [died about 1822]
Estate Papers of Mary Steel[Jacob Plank, Jacob Steel and Jacob Yoder were the bondsmen for the Jacob Steel estate.
Jacob Plank was the administrator.]The record of the public sale was dated 12 August 1822. Those who bought were David Harbaugh, Andrew Steel, John Barnet, John Steel, William Oxenrider, George Lureau, Maregret Steele, Jacob Steel, John Hess, Ephraim Markle, **the widow, Peter Anspaugh,
Peter Bacher, John Pickets (or Fickets), Charles Smith, Moses Keley, Jacob Schrock,
Samuel Rinerouth, John Peight, Jacob Oxenrider, Hubert Carr, Samuel Rinesmith,
Soloman Chrisman, Jacob Yoter, Thomas Cosce, Peter Schrock, Michael Steel,
Abraham Schrock, David McConahey, Thomas Cox, Joseph Keim?, George Leauveau,
John Plank, James Burgan, Jacob Shrock. The most expensive items were: a wagon to John Steel for $97, a bay horse to Jacob Steel for $28, a black mare to Andrew Steel for $56, and a sorell mare to Michael Steel for $25.**We know from this that Jacob Sr.'s wife was alive when he died. I think the widow's name was Mary. Here is why. In the packet there is a receipt:
Plank's Mill May 5th 1825
Received of Jacob Plank Administrator of the Estate of Jacob Steel deceased Nine dollars & twelve & a half cents as a part of my Leagecy, Rec'd by me Mary Steel her mark
Attest
Jacob Bowman
Also below there is a document which was signed by heirs and Mary signed first.
So could this have been a daughter Mary? Or a daughter-in-law?Also, if Mary was a daughter born in 1790(as we think there is) she was not living with Jacob Sr. in 1820. Where was she? The age ranges on the census do not indicate that a woman of 30 yrs. of age was living with any of the brothers. Only John has a woman of that age living with him and that would have been his wife. As a result, I don't think that the Mary Steel in the estate papers was the daughter Mary.
Jacob Steel was the assignee of David Harbaugh for Federal Land.Click here.
This note was in the estate packet:
Four years after date we or either of us promise to pay David Harbaugh his heirs or assigns Five hundred & forty dollars lawful money of the United States for value of him Received

Below this note was another note outlining payments that had been made by 9 May 1825
of $511.95.

In the presence of John Burnett Mary Stell [her mark]
John Stell
Jacob Stell
Sally Stell
Andrew Stell[The above was in reference to the fact that Jacob Steel had been the administrator of the estate of John Steel of Union Township, Mifflin County, PA. Jacob had filed papers back in 1807 concerning this estate and apparently money was still owed on ??land?? Who was this John Steel? Jacob's father?]
Jacob Plank administrator of the estate of Jacob Steel dec'd
To Jacob Bowman
To 9 days Services rendered said Plank in going from Pittsburg to Kishicoquillas Vally Penn in the month of June 1824 for the purpose of collecting debts in favour of said estate at $1.50 per day including expenses - $13.50.
Jacob BowmanState of Ohio Wayne county ...On the 5 day of February 1827 personally came the above named Jacob Bowman before me the undersigned a justice of the peace of said county, and on his oath declared the above account to be just and true. Sworn before me the ..... day of Feb 1827
Thomas Smith J.P.[So it sounds as though Jacob Bowman made a trip to Kishacoquillas, PA in Mifflin County to take care of this Jacob Steel estate business for Jacob Plank who was the administrator.]
[Perhaps while on one of his trips to Mifflin County to take care of the John Steel estate,
Jacob Steel Sr. stopped next door in Huntingdon County and bought a horse...at least that is what I have finally decided it was. A receipt was included in Jacob Steel's estate packet. The seller could not spell well so I am guessing at what he has written.]
July the 5 1821
Jacob Steel Seign[or "h"] er [I think he means "Senior".]
Bout of Martin ??Orleedy?? ["bout" = bought]
1 mear at $65.00 [It looks like interest and another charge were added on to total $71.95.]
[I think he means "mare".]
Below this David Newingham wrote:
Huntingdon county
Before me one of the Justices of the Peace in and for the county aforesaid personaley came
Marton ?arladey? and being sworn according to Law Did Depose and say that the amt of Sixty five Dollars as it --?-- against Jacob Steel Deceased is Just and Fair[?]
Sworn and Subscribed the 17th April 1823
{This was signed by David Newingham and Martin Orlady[?really hard to read]}
[Below were figures totaling 38.72 .....not sure if these were amounts paid or amounts still owed..]
There are a number of receipts in the packet that showed Jacob owing for things such as a harness, a bushel of salt, fish, whiskey, pounds of iron, a venison ham, nails. Some of the creditors were Charles Kelley, Hubbard Carr, Oliver Pratt, Thomas Smith, Enos Ellis, Jacob Fredrick.
It seems there was a disagreement with the administrator of the estate. Not Dated
Jacob Steel and John Steel heirs of Jacob Steel deceased accept to the account of Jacob Planck administrator of the Estate of said Jacob Steel deceased in the following ?s ,to wit,
that said Planck should have credited the estate with the sum of $2419.96 instead of $1994.55½
......that said Planck agreed with said heirs not to charge percentage on the $1500 for the sale of all the bonds in his account mentioned...That said Planck has charged ten Dollars more on the account of Money paid to Jacob Steel --?-- than was paid said Steel...that said Planck has not given credit for money paid him by said Jacob Steel belonging to said estate.....that said Planck has allowed an unreasonable and improper charge to Jacob Bowman[ was this in reference to the trip Bowman made..see above]........that said Planck has allowen an illegal account of John Planck.E. Dean [?] for said heirs
For now I am putting Mary Steel's death at 1827.The "vandue"/public auction was held November 28th 1827.
James McFadden was the administrator. At the sale a person named Sary Steel bought quite a few items. This may have been Sarah Steel, the widow of Michael Steel. Also buying at the sale were John Steel, Jacob Steel, Jacob Swinehart, Jacob Yoder, Michael Ault (or Sult or Sults), Samuel B Burgan, John Burnet, Frederick Whitmer, Mary Steel(this could have been John's, Jacob's, or Andrew's wife, or the mysterious sister),
George Larue Jr., Joseph Sanders, William Johnston, Andrew Hawn(the auctioneer), ?Odana Girts, Elisha Henry(the clerk for the sale), Valentine G. Smith, Samuel Chitister, George Larue.
Jacob Steel bought the family Bible. There is a receipt of payment to John Burnett for whiskey made use of for the sale.
Apparently these sales were social gatherings! The cost was $1.25.The appraisers were Jacob Plank, Thomas Smith, and Benjamin Erb. In their appraisal document it states that Mary Steel lived in Green Township.
There is a receipt indicating that Mary Steel lived with Jacob Steel for nine months and he was reimbursed for this from the estate.
A notice was published for the sale. What paper? Joseph Clingan was paid for the advertising.
There is a receipt of payment to a Henry Sonnedecker for "sundry visits"... He was paid $2 for preaching the funeral service.
The doctor, S. F. Day, received $12.
