In 1880 our William Johnston [age 80, born in PA, with both his parents being born in PA, and is still listed as "a farmer"]  was living with his daughter Elizabeth Winkler in her home in Greene Township, Wayne Co OH.  James W. Winkler [58, b. OH, a farmer] and his wife Elisabeth [ 53, b. OH with both her parents being born in PA...this is William and Mary Polly Johnston's daughter.].  Living there are the Winkler children William [29], Levi C.[26], Wesley J.[23], Sarah J. [18], Mary E.[16], Walter E. [12].  All the children were born in OH.

The IGI shows these children for Josiah Cotterman and Mary Johnson:
I have added in the probable married names for the women, but I don't know their death dates so I could be wrong about their attendance at the 1893 Steele Family reunion.  One of them could conceivably be a daughter of one of the sisters.

In 1880 there is a Levi Johnson [age 46, born OH, a farmer, both parents born in PA] listed in the census in Baughman Township, Wayne Co OH.  His wife is Nancy [age 43, born Oh, parents born IRE]. A son and a daughter are living with them: John W.  [age 21, b. OH, a farm laborer], and Matilda [age 14, b. OH]

In 1889 Levi was living in or near Dalton OH.

Levi may have been living in Fairview OH in 1893.  There was a Levi Johnson at the Steele Family reunion that year.

Catherine married David COMP on 
18 Jun 1857. 

In the 1880 census David [age 42, a farmer] and Catharine[age 44 born OH] were living in Canaan Twp, Wayne Co OH. Living with them were 2 sons and 2 daughters, all born in OH:  George [age 21], Mary [age 18], Franklin [age 12], and Alice [age 4].

They were living in Dorset OH in 1889.

Early Wayne County Births book has Enoch Johnston being born to William and Mary in 1850 in Green Township Wayne Co OH.  Enoch is not mentioned in the estate papers.

Wayne County Probate records show that Elizabeth Johnson married James Wesley Winkler 2 Apr 1846.
So far I found one child for them, Wesley James Winkler born 13 Feb 1857 in Orrville, Wayne Co OH.

I believe that Elizabeth was still alive in 1910.  See the bio on the link below.

There is an Elizabeth Winkler at the Ohio online death index:
Died in Wayne Co 29 Aug 1915, but I don't know if this is the right one.

[This is where I got a lot of evidence of relationship regarding the members of this family.]

[ William Johnston  died 3 Mar 1889, age 88 years, 11 months and 28 days. He was
born 7(?) Mar 1800 and is buried East Union Lutheran Cemetery, Wayne Co. OH.
His wife, Mary "Polly" Steele is buried there also. She died 10 June 1874,
age 67 years, 7 months and 2 days. She was born 8(?) Nov. 1806.]

payments have been made thereon and that there are no set offs against the same to his
knowledge.

Plaintiff against

Catharine Comp, William S. Johnston, Cindrilla Shoemaker,  George Johnston,
Civilla Comp, Lovina Kuntz,
Defendants

The plaintiff represents that he is the duly appointed and qualified administrator of the
estate of said William Johnson, deceased, late of the county of Wayne and state of Ohio,
that valid debts of decedent amounting to about $1150 have already been presented to
plaintiff for payment a schedule of which debts is hereto attached marked "Exhibit A" that
the costs of administration will amount to about $150, and that the total value of the
personal estate and effects of said decedent is but $55.62 being wholly insufficient to pay
the debts and costs aforesaid. The plaintiff further represents that said William Johnson
died seized in fee simple of the following described real estate situated in the township of
Green[,] county of Wayne  and State of Ohio[not included here is an actual land
description]
The said William Johnson died leaving as his sole heirs at law the said defendants and he
[the plaintiff, James Winkler] prays that he may be authorized and  ordered  to sell said
premises and for all other proper orders and relief in the premises[?].

      In obedience to an order and decree of the Probate Court, within and for said County,
made on the 1 day of Oct, A.D. 1889, in a certain cause, pending in said Court on the
Petition for the Sale of Real Estate, wherein you, as the Administrator of the Estate of
Wm Johnston, deceased, are Plaintiff, and Sarah A Walter et al, heirs of said deceased,
et al., are Defendants, you are commanded that by the oaths of Jacob Bechtel, Reuben
Buchwalter and Christian H Yoder, judicious and disinterested men of the vicinity, and
upon actual view of the premises, you cause a just valuation and appraisement to be made;
and that, when so appraised, you cause to be sold, according to law, as hereinafter specified,
the following described premises, situate in Township of Green, Wayne county and State
of Ohio, to-wit:  [Not included here is a repeat of the same land description.]

Said sale to be made  on the premises in said County, in which such real estate lies,
after notice of the time and place thereof, to be given by advertising the same at least
full four weeks successively, in some newspaper, printed in the County where said
lands are situate. Said  premises to be sold at public sale, for not less than 2/3 their
appraised value and upon the following terms, to-wit:  1/3 cash, 1/3 in one year and
remaining 1/3 in two years from day of sale, possession given April 1st 1889.
Deferred payments to be on interest from day of sale, and be secured by mortgage
on the premises sold.  You are therefore hereby commanded, without unnecessary
delay, to (advertise and) sell said premises according to law, and the order of the
Court, and that you return this order, with your proceedings under the same, duly
enclosed herein, forthwith upon compliance with the terms thereof.

REPORT OF SALE AT PUBLIC SALE
In pursuance of the foregoing order of sale, I gave notice of sale, in due form of law, in
the Orrville Crescent, a newspaper printed and in general circulation in said County,
and at the time and place mentioned in said notices for said sale, to-wit:  The premises,
on the 15th day of November, A.D. 1889, I offered said property at public vendue,
and William F Winkler having bid therefore best bidder, and the same being more than
two-thirds of the appraised value thereof, I struck off and sold the same to his [him?]
for that sum.

said court has fixed the time for hearing the testimony touching said claim, on the

Letters of Administration was signed 27 Mar 1889 by James W. Winkler that he was to
have the estate appraised and turn in an inventory within three months time.

James Winkler filed a claim against the estate of William Johnston. A petition to sell land
was filed by James W. Winkler, administrator of the estate, against Sarah A. Walter, et al.,
named as defendant. Petition filed 23 July 1889, with a hearing scheduled for 26 Aug 1889.

[5 Aug 1889 the following signed a "Waiver of Notice" which said at the top:]
James W. Winkler as Administrator of William Johnson deceased vs Sarah Ann Walter
et al.........In Probate Court, Wayne County, Ohio. "We, the undersigned, hereby waive the
issuing and service of Notice in the foregoing proceeding, and hereby voluntarily enter our
appearance herein."
[Then hand written, it says:] Said petition being for the sale of the real estate of said
William Johnson deceased, consisting of about 43 acres of land for the payment of the
debt of said estate, and orders incident thereto.
