Simon age 7 and Gustavus age 11 are listed in the 1850 census for Green Township Wayne County. They are living with Michael (39 Bavaria) and Mary (32 Germany) Miller. Other siblings are Otho (14), Elizabeth (9), Barbara (5), Adam (3). Also living there are Mary Becheman (6) and Sophia Becheman (4). All these children were born in Ohio. Simon's sister Eveline was not born until 1852. She married Joseph U. Bricker of Company H. Simon was listed on page 236 in the discharge records in Wayne County. He was born in Wayne County. He was 5' 8½", blue eyes, dark hair. He was a shoemaker at the time he enlisted. When he registered his discharge he listed his residence as Smithville. Simon Miller married Mary A. Goodyear 2 Ap 1868 in Wayne County OH. Simon Miller, age 38, was living in Smithville in the 1880 census with his wife Mary A. (38). Simon was a shoemaker. The children listed were Julian P. (9), Melvin (7), Charles W. (5), Hayes (3), and Wheeler (3). Simon Miller was still living in Smithville OH in 1900 as reported at
the 1900 Reunion of the 120th.
[Simon Miller's obituary was in the Wooster Daily Record on 5 Feb 1923 page 3. It states that he was in the 120th Regiment. He died at the home of is daughter, Mrs. I.R. Kauffman in Conneaut OH, but had been a resident of Smithville nearly his whole life. Part of that time he had a shoe cobbler shop there. At the time of his death his wife was still living. Four children were listed as still living: M.E. Miller, Clyde Miller, Charles Miller, and Mrs. I.R. Kaufman. Simon had a sister who was married to J. W. Bricker of North Bever Street. [See J. U. Bricker on this list. At times Joseph U. had the middle initial W., causing confusion with Joseph W. Bricker. But it was Joseph U. who lived on North Bever Street and was married to Eveline Miller.] The obituary also states that he was to be buried at Wooster Cemetery. Simon's widow was Mary A.......pension 1923 in OH. Simon Miller is buried in Wooster Cemetery, section 1, 25N½. Simon's dates 1842 to 1923. His wife Mary A. 1841-1927. Also on this stone are Ellis G. 1869 to 1876, and Clement H. 1876 to 1916. There is no indication on the stone or by a flag holder that this Simon was in Company H. However, the date 1923 and the widow's name on the pension point to this as being the right man. |
