Spouse 1: Mary Ann Dague [Mary died in childbirth.
Married: Abt. 1870 in: Rittman, Ohio
       Spouse 2: Catherine Steel

Samuel Hoover's first wife was Mary Ann Dague, also complications of giving birth (boy) to what would have been their first child.  I was told that her parents took the child to raise.  Have no idea as to his name.

He married Catherine Steele About 1870 in Rittman.  She was born about 1846 and died in childbirth summer of 1886.  This child is not listed below.

The children of Samuel Hoover and Catherine Steele:  Catherine was visiting relatives in OH when they met. Their first child Alice was born in OH and one other child that did not live, and some time after that they moved to Centerville Iowa.

1.  Alice C.  Hoover b. 24 Dec 1872 Rittman, Ohio d. 1 Mar 1964 Barberton, Ohio.  Married C. S. (Stoke) Smith

2.  Now this one I don't give too much credit to, but it is listed as a birth to Samuel and Catherine Hoover in the courthouse in Wooster.  Strange name and no one ever talked about her, but here goes:  Snoda Hoover b. 24 Dec 1873 in Wayne County, Milton Tnsp, Ohio

3.  Walter Hampton Hoover (this one is my grandfather) b. 11 Oct 1877 Centerville, Iowa d. 3 Oct 1948 Wadsworth, Ohio.  Married Dora Lance 7 Apr 1901.
The published Obituary gives a death date of 4 Oct 1948.  He died right at 11:00PM, the family who was present has always used the 3 October date.

4. Eddie Hoover, would assume Edward, b. about 1880 Centerville, Iowa d. about 1880 Centerville, Iowa.

5. John Cleveland Hoover b. 19 Dec 1884 Centerville, Iowa d. 17 January 1961 Pontiac, Michigan.  Married Eleanor Elizabeth Byers.
Calculated from remarks of Uncle Cleve and my Grandfather, Uncle Cleve was about 2 1/2 years old when the family moved back to Wayne Co., and they talked how his father had to carry him through the deep snow drifts.

Obituary:  Rittman Press  Thursday 2 June 1921
Civil War Veteran Dies
Samuel Hoover who resided in this section many years ago died in Barberton on Tuesday of last week at the home of a daughter, Mrs. C.S. Smith.  The deceased was a veteran of the Civil War and was more than 77 years of age.
Funeral services were held Friday in Rittman at the U. B. Church at 10:30 a.m. and were conducted by the pastor.  The burial was made in the Swagler cemetery.
Samuel Hoover moved from Ohio to Iowa considerably more than a quarter of a century ago.  There his wife died and about 25 years ago he returned to Ohio to make his home.  He has been living recently at the home of his daughter in Barberton.
Besides the daughter just mentioned he is survived by two sons, Walter Hoover, of Rittman and J.C. Hoover, of Detroit.
The deceased served in the Union army during the Civil War, 1861 to 1865, and later made his home in this vicinity and then at a still later period moved to the west.
