Cornelius may not be a son. In the 1840 IA census, William has only one son (less than 5); in the 1850 census, there are 2 boys: Dennis 12 and William 9. There is a Martha Holden age 1 living with James and Elizabeth Groff. It may be that Martha Gibbs died around 1849 and William had his sister Elizabeth Groff caring for the new infant and that there were other children born in the 1840's like Omer and Jane who were left in the care of other people around the time of the 1850 census. Another explanation is that Omer, Cornelius and Jane are children of another Holdren relative. In the 1860 census, Cornelius age 22 appears, living with William and Omer D. 16 and Jane M. 13 are also added. Jane M. may also be the Martha who was living with Eliz and James Groff and the age is somewhat wrong as it was for several of the children.
