William Murphy Notes

1880 U.S. Federal Census>New York>Wayne>Other Townships>District 178>12/60

1892 New York State Census Third Election District, Lyons, page 7

1900 U.S. Census • New York • Wayne • Other Townships • ED# 115 • 11/33

In the 1900 census, William stated that he was born in 1845, had come to America in 1865 and had been here for 35 years. He also stated that he was a Naturalized citizen. His sister, Mary, in the 1900 census stated that she had come to America in 1874.

There is a conflict in the year he was born, 1900 census states 1845, his grave marker states 1847 and he was 33 years old in the 1880 census making it 1847.  His death cert. states 2/20/1846 and according to baptismal records from the Catholic Church in Newbawn, Wexford Co., Ireland he was baptized on 2/14/1847.
NEWBAWN, WEXFORD CO., IRELAND CHURCH RECORDS

The 1886-1887 Directory of Lyons lists William Murphy, horseshoer, Pearl n Broad and Lawrence Bradley , blacksmith, Pearl n Broad.  William would have Lawrence as the Godfather of his daughter Josephine.

In the 1880 and the 1900 census' he listed himself as a Blacksmith.

William filed his "first papers" for citizenship on March 2, 1870.  On October 3, 1872, William became a naturalized citizen of the United States just in time to be able to vote in the national election the next month.  His sponsors were Robert Hoy and Michael Tomney.  Robert was born in Ireland around 1820 and was a laborer.  Both his wife and daughter were named Esibela. (Source: 1880 census for Lyons, NY)  Does the name Michael Tomney sound familiar?  His wife, Mary, was the godmother of my Great Aunt Anna Murphy and Great Aunt Sarah Elizabeth Murphy Esterheld.  Michael and his wife worked on the canal boats and in 1870 lived with the Lawrence Bradley family. This is the first clear spelling of the name that I have found.  In the baptismal records and the census' it was not clear.
