Notes for Margery Bigelow
Houghton
From "The History of Medina Co. and Ohio" 1881-
In the biography on Lorenzo Phinney:
"Oct. 20, 1831, he was married to his present
companion, whose place of nativity was Maryland Township, Otsego Co., N.Y.,
time of birth April 15, 1809; her parents were Ebenezer and Margery (Bigelow)
Houghton; to them were born eleven children, but five lived to be
grown......Mrs. Phinney has two sisters, Emily, Mrs. Seth P. Duncan, in Oswego,
N.Y., and Rebecca, Mrs. Isaac Blair, of this township; her parents died in this
township, her father in 1857, mother in 1860."
In the biography of Isaac Blair:
"when he moved out, bringing with him his present wife,
who is Rebecca Houghton, a native of Worcester, N.Y. , and was born Jan. 11,
1804; a daughter of Ebenezer and Margery (Bigelow) Houghton. Ebenezer was a son of Ebenezer. The father of Margery was named Joshua."
This is were I determined the names of Laura and Rebecca
Houghton's parents names.

On 3/9/2002 Michele Norton of Akron, OH sent me a picture of the grave. It is a 4 sided marker. On one side is Ebenezer Houghton, on another Margrey Houghton, and on a third side Betsey Harrington. From the picture I know that the book was in error when it used ditto marks for the last name Harrington. Also the date for Margrey(sic) is wrong. The picture shows Aug. 6, 1860 as the date of death not Feb. 6. Also the picture shows that it is 15 D and not 5 D as in the book. Working backwards with this info Margery's date of birth would be June 21, 1781, thus I make the connection to Margery Bigelow born on June 21, 1781, daughter of Joshua Bigelow from the book by Howe, Bigelow Family in America. Further evidence is that Ebenezer Houghton and Joshua Bigelow the fathers can be found in the same counties in the 1790 and the 1800 census', Westminster Co., Mass. and Otsego Co., NY respectfully. From the picture I am not able to verify the info for Ebenezer or Betsey. From the 1850 census I know that a Betsey Harrington, 38 years old, was living with them and I suspect that she was a daughter. All indications now point to the fact that Laura and Betsey were possibly twins. Also listed as living with them was Abagail Harrington, age 14, which I suspect is the daughter of Betsey.
