IDEA If Nathan Wood died in the Civil War and his body returned to the family he would be buried near Battle Creek. We should check out the cemetaries in the area. Any thoughts?

The Nathan Wood Mystery

Nathan Wood is Kenneth A. Holcomb, Jr's Great grandfather. Nathan is Jan Strum's, Marianne Owen's, and the Holcomb Boys', 2nd great-grandfather. We know very little about him. What we do know is that he was married to Eliza Douglas and had 2 children, Solon Lorenzo Wood, Sr. and Belle Wood Holcomb McDowell.
On the back of this one and only picture we have of him is noted in the pen of Kenneth A. Holcomb,Sr. "My Mother's Father who went to the Civil War and never returned Born 1838 Wood"
From the 1880 census we know he was born in NY. From the 1900 census we know that he had only 2 children with Eliza Douglas.
In 1858 he had a son, Solon Lorenzo, Born in Chatauqua, NY.
In 1862 he had a daughter, Belle, born in Battle Creek Michigan. Belle Wood's and Irving Holcomb's wedding certificate Belle wrote her father's name was Nathan Wood and her place of birth was Battle Creek, Michigan. In 1940, Belle Wood Holcomb McDowell had to fill out a birth certificate for Ellen, her daughter. It should be noted that on that form she stated she was born "on farm, Michigan".
Some facts from Ken
Eliza referred to Concord, NY as her birthplace on her marriage certificate when marrying Lorenzo Hart and since there is no current town in NY named Concord, we need to pin down the fate of Concord (there is currently an East Concord, NY) and determine what county it was in in 1840. I have a feeling that capturing more info on Eliza and her ten siblings and her father, LeGrande, might indirectly help our search for Nathan and his parents.

Gladys Wood Harwood told Marianne Owen that her father, Solon, Sr.'s, middle name was the same as his, Solon, Sr., father's first name, Lorenzo. This would make who we know as Nathan Wood, Lorenzo Wood. So we could be searching for Lorenzo Nathan Wood or Nathan Lorenzo Wood. Nathan could be short for Nathanial.
What we know-
The Holcomb's had the picture to go by, where Nathan is used.
Jan Strum had a sheet of paper from her Mom that had Nathan used.
Gail and Marianne had what their grandmother, Gladys Wood Harwood, told them, which was Lorenzo.
On Solon, Sr.'s and Eva Cooper's wedding certificate it states Nathan.
On Belle's and Irving Holcomb's wedding license of 1883 it states Nathan

Is a name used anywhere else?

Some more info from Gladys Wood Harwood -
Solon, Sr. had 2 brothers and a sister. We know who the sister was, the mystery is who are the 2 brothers. Gladys had a diary from 1918 that had an address for an Orrie Wood, RT2, State Street, Rockford, IL. Could Orrie be a brother, a nephew, or a coincidence of the last name? Could the 2 brothers be half brothers?
Note that in the 1880 census from IL, Eliza Douglas is shown as head of household and had only Belle, 17, and Solon, 21 living with her. In the 1900 census she is listed as only having 2 children, 1 alive and 1 deceased.
Could it be possible that the cousin writing down the info from Gladys Wood Harwood made a mistake and misunderstood what she told him? Could it be that she said she had 2 brothers and 1 sister?

Facts about Eliza Jane Douglas Wood ? Hart

In the 1880 census from IL she is shown as head of household with a ? after the word married and at age 39 had daughter Belle, 17, and son Solon, 21, living with her.
Eliza J. Douglas is listed as a witness to Solon Wood Sr.'s marriage to Eva Cooper in Dec 1882 in Beloit, WI. Eliza Douglas is listed as a witness to Belle Wood's marriage to Irving Holcomb in Feb 1883 in Belvidere, IL.
Her marriage certificate to Lorenzo in 1886 indicates she was born in Concord, Erie, NY.
Eliza signed her name Eliza Jane Douglas on the certificate of the IL State Board of Health "Return of a Marriage to County Clerk" June 17, 1886, the date she married Lorenzo D. Hart in Belvidere, IL. The marriage certificate indicated it was the second marriage for Lorenzo and the THIRD marriage for Eliza.
In the 1900 census she is shown living with Lorenzo at 736 East Hurlbut Ave., Belvidere. The adjacent entry in the 1900 census appears to be 730 and reflects Irving A. Holcomb and Belle W.(wife) and LaVern (son) and Ellen L. (daughter).
Her obituary in 1924 indicates she was born in Cattaraugus County, NY.and indicates "a resident of Belvidere since 1900..." and further "...her home was made in the east until her removal here (Belvidere) 24 years ago. Mrs. Hart was the last of a family of eleven children". This is where the English language gets funny. Was she the last born of eleven or was she the last one alive?
Eliza was living with her daughter, Belle (then Mrs. A. McDowell) at 124 1/2 Buchanan in Belvidere at the time of her death.

Ken's ideas
We need to get a copy of Solon L. Wood's obit from the Dubuque, IA newspaper.

Thanks to Marianne Owen this has been done. It is from the Dubuque Herald of June 4, 1893 "Solon A. Wood, aged 34 years, an employee of the Carr, Ryder & Engler Company, died at 1:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon at his residence, 1342 Clay Street. He is survived by his wife and four children. The funeral will be held Saturday at 2 o' clock; services at the congregational church. Deceased was a member of the A.O.U.W.
Marianne points out the error in the middle initial. Thanks Marianne!

Marianne Owen says that she is about 1 1/2 hours away from Battle Creek and she maybe able to check into birth records there - this would be super!
