Julius Hohnke (1840-1908) emigrated from Posen, Prussia, to Clearfield Co, PA. He had 6 children who were probably born in Prussia: Bertha, Emma, Lena, Albertina, Lewis, and August. Julius had two sisters that I know of: Henrietta (my great grandmother), who married Karl Streich, and Wilhelmina, who married Frederick Schrock. There is evidence that the progenitors of this family were Frederick Hohnke and Augusta. I need to find birth, christening, and marriage records for this family, particularly those records once located in former Posen. |
INTRODUCTION and PURPOSE: In my wanderings over the Internet, I discovered that the Hohnke surname is unique. If the Social Security Death Benefit index (SSDI) is any measure of the uniqueness of a particular surname, then there are only 36 persons in the SSDI with a Hohnke surname (exact spelling). I have come across two researchers- Michael Hankey and Doug Walters- who have posted their linked pedigrees of Hohnke surnames at several different sites on the Internet. They have also made GEDCOMS of their data available. The International Genealogical Index (IGI) of the LDS contains a little over 100 individuals associated with the Hohnke surname. Most of these individuals of the Hohnke community came from a relatively small region in former Prussia which is today Poland. Presumably, persons with the same surname who lived in close proximity to each other were related. It is this type of data that I want to reference at this site in order to put others in touch with what is available. What have you found? Email it to me so I can present it here.
