Further checking showed Lieut. Michael AMBROSE was listed in the British Loyalist Regiment: Prince of Wales' American Volunteers and that Joseph RAWDING was a Serjt. in that Regiment, his Rank being described in the Post War Settlement Memorial of Lieut. Michael Ambrose - 14 Mar 1785 - found on
the Loyalist Institute Website . (look under Genealogy!)

the probable location of the Land Petition according the the Post War Settlement
Memorial of Lieut.Michael AMBROSE. ( see transcript above)- Joseph RAWDING's
Land Grant probably was in this location.
* 7 Sep 2007: Received e-mail from Denton ORDE with description of Salmon River from his copy of McALPINE's DIRECTORY-1898:
"After reading
some of the information from NB, and the mention of Salmon River, I decided to
look at an old book that I picked up at a yard sale a few years ago,...."McALPINES
GAZETTEER and GUIDE, Maritime Provinces and Newfoundland 1898". I checked the
place name SALMON RIVER: a post, lumbering and fishing settlement in
St. John Co. , nearest telegraph, Hampton, 41 miles; banks, St. John, 42 miles;
all other connections, at, or the same as St, Martin's, 12 miles; contains 1 saw
mill, 1 church, population, 60.
Interesting that you said the petition was for 60. ??"
*7 Sep 2007: Also, found a great website that has a video of the beautiful area of the Salmon River - which is now a Park: Fundy Trail Parkway. You will see when you view the "Virtual Tour" video that they would've had a hard time making a living by farming in that land. The land was used for lumbering early on. There are great historical photographs of the Salmon River Area in the video at the site linked to below. Beautiful and Worth Watching!
-Go to this site by clicking on the link below and check out the beautiful Nine-minute "Virtual Tour" video of the Fundy Trail Parkway: (it gave me a hard time running saying my windows media player wasn't working right but I kept pressing play and finally got it to work.) Definitely worth the trouble!! I can imagine our Joseph RAWDING and his fellow Loyalists sailing past the giant cliffs as they made their way to the mouth of the Salmon River....:0)-Sue (CANNON) HOHNEKE
How grateful we are to have been able to find our Ancestor, Joseph RAWDING finally on a Loyalist list!
The next step is to find out what he did with the land he received from this Land Grant and when and where he went or his three sons went to Annapolis County, Nova Scotia. Also, please note, as I did today (6 Sep 2007) in learning more Nova Scotia History, that New Brunswick was considered Nova Scotia in 1784/1785!
Also, we need to find where did Joseph RAWDING live before he joined the Prince of Wales' American Regiment in 1777! If we could locate his residence before 1777 (New York? Long Island?, Connecticut? New Jersey?), then we could find out when he arrived in the New World and also perhaps then trace him back to England (Yorkshire?) as the Rawding Researcher's E-mail Group has been striving to do!
After "Googling" the Prince of Wales' American Regiment, there several different sites that have information regarding them. Most helpful for personal information regarding our Joseph RAWDING was Michael Mallery's website: Prince of Wales American Volunteers where a short history of the Regiment was followed by the actual members of the PWAV was listed with all the pertinent information regarding their service-what muster lists they were listed on and what companies they were in. I have contacted Michael through his e-mail to thank him for the research and website he has created that has helped us find more about our RAWDING Loyalist Soldier Ancestor and he said he will include my e-mail address under Joseph RAWDING so that we will perhaps find others in the family researching as well!
Our Joseph RAWDING was listed as being in COLLETT'S COMPANY, McNEILL'S COMPANY, and HOLLAND'S COMPANY.
Sergeant - Joseph RAWDING:
On August 1777 Muster Roll. On Piquet in February 1778 Muster Roll. Promoted from Corporal to Sergeant sometime afteer March 1780. Sergeant in April 1781 Muster Roll. On Command in April 1781 Muster Roll. On Command in June 1781 Muster Roll. Petitioned for land on Salmon River. See PETITION (See above on this webpage) of Michael AMBROSE 1784. Settled in Saint John County, New Brunswick.

To find out what Joseph RAWDING's Regiment did during the American Revolution, just click on the link button below.
For what his uniform looked like click on this webpage link by Rudy Scott Nelson:
Uniforms of Loyalist Units in the Americas
of which this is an excerpt:
"PRINCE OF WALES' AMERICAN REGIMENT: Red Coats, White waistcoats and breeches, blue facings (green facings are reported by a Hessian officer in 1783)"
Remember that the people listed on the Land Petitions at the top of the page are probably people he lived with and survived with and many may be close to Joseph as friends, and maybe family. He must have come to New Brunswick (Nova Scotia) with his wife (we do not know her name yet) and family. Son, Joseph "Elias" RAWDING (RODDY) would have been 12 years old. Maybe there were other family members we do not know of as well. Imagine the hardships of making a new life in a rough country. I'm grateful for their sacrifices and willingness to carry on after a bitter defeat for I would not be me without them! </blockquote>
There is more of their story yet to unfold....
