 HOHNEKE Origins in GERMANY

Aug 2007 - Mary MAGERS' Research in Stanton Co., NE

Our HOHNEKE Cousin, Mary (HOHNEKE) MAGERS has sent us new information she has found while researching in Stanton, Stanton County, NE.

She has located the marriage certificate for William HOHNEKE, her ancestor, who is a brother of our August HOHNEKE.  This marriage certificate has the HOHNEKE name spelled many different ways even in the same sentence! That reminds us to have an open mind when looking for the HOHNEKE name in documents!

William married Bertha PATSCH (many different spellings of course) and she is even listed with her given name as her surname in the certificate!  Her father is listed however as Karl PEUSCHA.

What is really wonderful was the:

"NEW" (to us) Surname for Friederick HOHNEKE's wife Auguste "Gusta"--VOSS!

A new surname has been added the Robert (Bob)  HOHNEKE Pedigree Chart -

Our Thanks to Mary MAGERS!

Even though Friederick and Auguste (VOSS) HOHNEKE were married in Germany, I checked Nebraska Censuses for the name VOSS as some of her family may have immigrated as well, and I found in 1930 Census: NE, Cedar County, Prct. 14:  Hans J. VOSS and wife Anna and family who immigrated to the U.S. in 1895 and he was a Naturalized Citizen and his wife was born in Wisconsin-children born in Nebraska.  There even seemed to be a  village in Germany written under where he was born:  SLATISVILLE ? which got me thinking about what did we know about the places in Germany where our Friederich  HOHNEKE and our Auguste VOSS were born and married and where their children were born.  There has been no research by myself in German Records for them yet!

WHERE IN GERMANY DID OUR HOHNEKES ORIGINATE?

We have known for a while that Friederich (Johann Friederich?) HOHNEKE's place of origin in Germany was in Brandenburg and that his son William was born in "KOINEBERG" Germany according to a document, and that son August was born in "GROSS MANTEL-BY-KOENIGSBERG" in Germany.

KOINEBERG:  We have had no luck in finding this location in Germany.  However, I believe the place actually should be KOENIGSBERG .

KOENIGSBURG:  In German it is written with two dots over the "O" and translated in pronunciation in English as "OE" and found while doing searches as KONIGSBERG.  The full description of the location is:

KONIGSBERG, BRANDENBURG, PREUSSEN (PRUSSIA), GERMANY

now known as:  CHOJNA (DEBNO), SZCZECIN, POLAND

GROSS MANTEL BY KOENIGSBERG:   A late 1800's map of Germany below shows the location of Gross Mantel which is about 35 km (about) NorthEast of Berlin and just a little (single digit km) southwest of KONIGSBERG. It is interesting to note that the KLEIN MANTEL was an Estate of the Landed Gentry.

now known as:  METNO, SZCZECIN, POLAND

On checking the Family History Catalog of FamilySearch.org I found that there are microfilmed records for KONIGSBERG (KOENIGSBERG) available for the years that William and August HOHNEKE were born, also when Frederich (Friederich) (Friederick) (Johann Friederick) HOHNEKE and Auguste "Gusta" VOSS were married.  Hopefully we will find one of these vitals on the microfilmed records.

*WE DO NOT KNOW WHICH OF THE FOLLOWING MICROFILMS WILL HAVE THE INFORMATION WE NEED SO THEY COULD BE ORDERED ONE AT A TIME AND CHECKED OUT BEFORE ORDERING THE NEXT FILM.  THEY WILL BE IN GERMAN SCRIPT AND THERE ARE HELPS AT THE FAMILY HISTORY CENTERS TO DECIPHER THE WRITING.  WE WILL BE LOOKING FOR THE NAMES: HOHNEKE, HOHNKE, HONEKE, HOHENKE, etc. etc. and VOSS- ONCE YOU FIND IF THE DOCUMENTS ARE BIRTHS, MARRIAGES OR DEATHS YOU CAN BE LOOKING FOR THE YEAR FIRST, THEN THE HOHNEKE and VOSS SURNAMES.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO PARTICIPATE IN RESEARCHING THESE MICROFILMS, PLEASE LET ME KNOW SO WE CAN MAKE SURE WE ARE NOT DUPLICATING OUR RESEARCH!  Also I would be glad to help with German Script Tutoring and/or German Research tips for anyone wishing to try to find the HOHNEKES in Germany!  I have the experience of doing research like that but my health does not permit me to do it anymore.  We would appreciate any help you can give us in finding the HOHNEKES!

-Thank you.- Sue (CANNON) HOHNEKE hohnekecannon@sbcglobal.net

My hope is that we will be able to find our HOHNEKE Family in Germany finally!  That day maybe is at hand!

29 Aug 2007 - A new HOHNEKE Descendancy including these new additions will be coming soon!
