 DUKESHIRE/

TUCHSCHERER/DUKESHIER/DUKESHERE

Germany-Nova Scotia, Canada-U.S.

The DUKESHIRE Descendancy starting with the grandfather of our Nova Scotia Immigrant Ancestor, George TUCHSCHERER (DUKESHIRE) (DUKESHERE), begins in Hessen-Nassau, Germany in the 1600's.

TUCHSCHERER means "Cutter of Cloth" in German and was perhaps the occupation of our earliest known ancestor.

During the Revolutionary War in America in the 1770-1780's, our great great grandfather George TUCHSCHERER joined the Hessian Soldiers who fought for the British during that war. After the war was over, land was offered in Nova Scotia as payment for those Hessian soldiers who desired to stay in the New World and George (who changed his name to DUKESHIRE or spelled DUKESHERE/DUKESHEIR, etc. to be more English) settled in the Waldeck Line region in Annapolis County. There he married Mary WHITE in 1787 probably in Granville, Annapolis County, Nova Scotia, with whom he had a large family.

Our line descends from his son Daniel DUKESHIRE. Verda (DUKESHIRE) PRIKLER, also a descendant of the original George TUCHSCHERER (DUKESHIRE/DUKESHERE) through son Philip's line, did much research into the family and published a book in 1978 -"TUCHSCHERER -History and Genealogy of the DUKESHIRE Family in America" . In 1986 on our Family History Trip, My daughter Becky and I (Sue [CANNON] HOHNEKE) met Verda and her husband, Somers and were able to obtain a copy of her then out-of-print book.  We had thought that my great great grandmother's name DUKESHIRE was English!  Verda PRIKLER's book was a real revelation!

A few months after returning home to Wisconsin we were contacted by DUKESHIRE cousin, Bob DUKESHIRE, also descended from Daniel DUKESHIRE, and who had met with Verda PRIKLER. He was also interested in gathering the DUKESHIRE Family and after having met with Verda and Somers PRIKLER who had desired to print a volume II of the TUCHSCHERER family but were unable to do so due to illness, he and his brother Bill took on the project and researched and contacted as many of the DUKESHIRE family as they could over the next proceeding years culminating in the "DUKESHIRE-DUKESHIER GENEALOGY-Descendants of Georg Josef TUCHSCHERER and Mary WHITE 1787-1993" - in 1994. It is with thanks to the immense work of Verda (DUKESHIRE) PRIKLER and of both Bob and Bill DUKESHIRE that this DUKESHIRE Descendancy exists.

Recently, Bob DUKESHIRE has asked if I (Sue [CANNON] HOHNEKE) would continue the gathering of the DUKESHIRE family. We hope to add to the descendancy with your help. If you will find your DUKESHIRE family here please contact us with your updated information for your branch of the DUKESHIRE family tree.   Living persons are only listed by name but all information is being kept for them in the family data base.  We would love to add any "new" members or "lost" cousins" of the DUKESHIRE family and hope you will send any additions and/or corrections to this descendancy to us. We look forward to hearing from you and finding out what our DUKESHIRE cousins are doing!  Hopefully you will share photos and information with us as well!  We will update this descendancy from time to time with newly accumulated information.

14 Sep 2007 Thank You to Cousin Ragan CURPHEY who has contacted us with corrections and additional family information!  She is related to us through RAWDING and DUKESHIRE lines.
