The fee was usually for the mort cloth to cover the body before putting
in the grave. In the earlier burials I think the 10 pence was for a child's
mort cloth. I'm not sure if some people didn't use the parish mort cloth
because they didn't want to pay the fee or if they had their own family
cloth. Sometimes ringing the bells increased the parish fee. But
put the fee in because that is at least an indicator if the person was a
child
or an adult in the earlier records.

WILLIAM DRUMMOND HOGG: He was a Barrister-at-law in Ottawa Canada. He was born in the town of Perth,County of Lanark,Ont.Can.on the Feb.29 1848. His father was David HOGG,son of Lieutenant John HOGG,of the Royal Artillery, a native of Edinburgh,Scot.,who as an officer,took part at the seige of Copenhagen,at the battle of the Pyramids,battle of the Nile,etc. David HOGG emigrated to Canada 1832,and was one of the pioneer settlers of the town of Perth,where he carried on a large furniture manufacturing business. He died in 1882. His mother was Isabella Inglis of Clackmannan.She came to Canada in 1831,and she died in 1881. Mr HOGG was a Presbyterian. He was married on Sept.14,1875 to Louisa Agnes RATTRAY,third dau.of the late Dr.Charles Rattray,of Cornwall,Ont. Mr HOGG was admitted to the bar in 1874. The late lamented James BETHUNE Q.C. was married to Mr. HOGG's wife's sister. (thanks to Ann Jensen)

Miss HELEN HOGG. Miss Hogg was born on July 24 1887 in Tullibody,Clackmannan,Scotland. She came to Canada in 1907 to live with her brother in Montreal. Miss Hogg came to live at the," Middlechurch Home " on March 30,1981, and died on Sept.7,1993 at 106 years. *NOTE* I think that the nursing home was in Winnipeg,Man.Canada.

His father was Willliam Cunningham born 18 Jan 1685 at Dysart, Fifeshire, Scotland, he married Christian Hogg 27 August 1708, Dysart, Fife, Scotland.

James C. Reeves - In 1682 William Hoge is said to have emigrated from Scotland to New York, whence he soon removed to Perth Amboy, NJ, then to Pennsylvania, and finally to the Valley of Virginia.  He is said to have married Barbara Hume and to have left issue by her of, among others, a son named John, who made his home in Lancaster County, PA.  He had numerous issue by his wife Gwenthleen Bowen Davis, whom he married in 1722.  This issue included four sons, John, Jonathan, David and Benjamin

Before we knew only that George was "Gentleman`s Servant" From Debretts Peerage .He was Rt.Hon.HENRY DUNDAS PC MP for Co Edinburgh 1774-90 and for Edinburgh City 1790-1802. He held seven cabinet posts,was created BARON DUNIRA of Co Perth and Viscount MELVILLE in the peerage of the United Kingdom.Died 1811. May be this is the reason that our ancestor ADAM HOGG (son of George Hogg and Isabel Glover,Brother of Alexander ) was able to get an introduction to the Hon.East India Company and become Brigadier General.

Elizabeth Hogg born c1756 in Rox.Scot. She married a Francis Aitchison
(born 1752). They married 1774 in Rox. Scot.

Catriona Wilson - I am trying to trace some Hogg ancestors. I am descended from Barbara Hogg.She was born on 23rd may 1823 to William Hogg, linen weaver/merchant, and Nicholas Hunter in Oldamstocks, East Lothian, Scotland. They had married in Oldhamstocks on 20th may 1814
She had a sister Janet born circa 1814 who married a Thomas Hogg. She died on 30th january 1876. They ran a temperance hotel in Edinburgh and had two daughters Mary, born circa 1854 and Louisa Josephine "Lucy" born 28th march 1856.
Barbara also had a brother William Sinclair Hogg who was born on 22nd july 1819 in Oldhamstocks and another sister Mary Hogg who was born on 25th december 1820 in Oldhamstocks.
I would be very interested if anyone could supply me with any information regarding what happened to William and his wife Nicholas and their children William and Mary.

Lani in Seattle - I have been trying for years to find my great grandfather. He is the missing link.
He is named as my great grand mothers husband on her death cert. and on my grand fathers baptism cert. he is listed as Robert Hogg born in Scotland. On the baptism cert. he is named as Robert Percy Hogg. Of the two nephews of JAMES HOGG that came to the US there were two sons named Robert. One is accounted for but the other is not. I'm thinking that he may have headed up
to Canada to join relatives in Galt Ont. during the Civil War. Found and married Margaret Carruthers then moved to Manitoba. My grand father was born in l881 in Winnipeg. His father ROBERT P. HOGG, was supposed to have died
between l881 and l885. It is said he filled a drunkards grave. I have had researchers look into the Manitoba cemeteries so far nothing. The family ended up living in Oakland Manitoba, just north of Portage LaPrairie on a wheat ranch. I hope that maybe someone out there has just a little clue for me.

Bill Garner - My 5th great grandparents are Joseph and Ann(Hogg)Denton. Ann's
father was Gideon Hogg. Gideon was born in Scotland and lived in Caswell
CO.,NC. at the time of the Revolution. He was a private in Colman's Company.
Gideon married Judith ? and ten children were born to this couple:
Ann,Mourning,John,William,Elizabeth,Thomas,Agnes,Gideon Jr.,Judith and
Rebecca. Gideon Sr. died on 17 July 1793 in Caswell NC.
Ann Hogg married Joseph Denton in 1765 in NC. Ann was born in 1745 and died
in Cumberland River section of TN./Ky.. Joseph and Ann(Hogg)Denton children
were:Martha,Agnes,Elizabeth,Susanna and Jeremiah Denton. I would like to

Also I found a VERY OLD copy of James Hogg's book "The Mountain Bard" in an
antique store. It is a very small (about 4"x3"). I did not know of James at
the time but I wrote down his birth year. I checked in with the "Hogg Site"
and found he may be a relative. Could someone let me know if these books are
rare. I am sorry I did not record more information such as publisher etc.. I
did look for a copyright date but did not find it listed.

Helen - I'm hoping to find information about Agnes HOGG, my great great great grandmother. She married a James HUME. They had a daughter, Janet HUME, who was born May 22, 1791 in New Abbey, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland. Janet married a John DOUGLAS. She died at Thornyhill, Colvend, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland, July 28, 1858. I have no other information about Agnes HOGG or James HUME.

Graeme Hogg - It is generally believed that my family relates back to one of the brothers of James Hogg, The Ettrick Shepherd. My G-Grandfather Samuel Hogg was born in Co Tyrone, N-Ireland ca1828-30. His father, also Samuel would have been born ca1808-10.

William Hogg & Mary Beattie ran a farm at Stobohope in Peebleshire & most of their family lived in that area & are buried at the Stobo cemetary. David Hogg & Helen Oliver`s family do not appear to match. Robert Hogg & Elizabeth Oliver vanish after their son William was born in 1807, appearing again in 1828 when they had a daughter (Elizabeth) christened at Kilmory on the Isle of Arran.

In 1833 an Isabella Hogg married William Paisley at Kilmory & had 4 daughters there. They had a 5th at Ettrick then in 1846 migrated to Broome, New York. They had 9 in total.

As census records show no other Hogg`s on Arran, I believe Isabella to be a daughter of Robert & Elizabeth. In your family lists you indicate that Robert died in 1833 & that Elizabeth went to America that same year. I am hoping you may be able to pass on to me any data regarding this, whether she was accompanied or where she may have settled. I have strong feelings that the Samuel I am researching, if a son may have have followed sometime later as I am unable to find any record of dearh in either Scotland or Ireland. Any information you can provide me I will truely be greatfull for, & if I can contribute to you I certainly will.

On Saturday Mr. and Mrs. Hogg, who reside at 74 Townhead, received word that their son, Corporal G.H. Hogg, of the 7th Battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers, had fallen in the recent big fight at Hill 70.  The word came from Private Geo. Cooper, of the same regiment, one of his comrades, who states that he was sorry to inform them that George had fallen in battle.  He was leading on his men splendidly and died like a hero.  He saw him fall but could not get near him.  Private Cooper does not say that he saw Corpl. Hogg after he fell, and there is still a glimmer of hope that he may be severely wounded.  It was in the third charge on Hill 70 that he fell, and as the ground taken was held by the British, further news will likely come to hand.  Corpl. Hogg served his apprenticeship in the fitting shop at the Lion Foundry, and prior to joining the Army was employed at the Carron works, Falkirk.  Both he and Pte. Cooper enlisted together.  Corporal Hogg, while in Kirkintilloch took an active part in the work of the Y.M.C.A., in which he was for some time an office-bearer.  At the meeting on Sabbath morning feeling reference was made to his untimely death, and the Association flag was flying at half-mast.

Official intimation was received from the War Office on Friday morning confirming the sad news that Corporal Hogg, 7th R.S.F., son of Mr. and Mrs. Hogg, 72 Townhead Kirkintilloch, had been killed in action.  Corporal Hogg's parents have received many letters of sympathy, among them being from Lieut. Mair, his platoon commander, to the following effect:  "Please permit me to offer you a few lines of sympathy in the great loss you have suffered in the loss of your son, Corpl. George Hogg.  You will be glad to know that he could not have suffered in any way, as he was struck by shrapnel on the front line on the crest of the hill (Hill 70), and was killed instantaneously.  As his platoon commander, I have always found him a ready and willing worker, and ever cheery in spite of all discomforts.  He led the way in the great attack, and showed himself a brave and fearless man, and his loss is greatly felt by us who knew him so well."  Corpl Hogg's comrade, George Cooper, of the same regiment, who is a doctor's servant, has also written to say that he did his best to find his friend, but the shell fire was so heavy that the doctor and he had to hurry on, and then they got the order to retire to let the Scots Guards in their place.  He was led to believe that George was shot through he heart, but he would enquire further about it.  He was sorry to say that the gas did for most of the boys.  Personally, he was a good two or three hours before he recovered from the effects of it.  Writing from the Base Headquarters at Havre, the Rev. C. Guthrie Cooper, in the course of a most sympathetic letter to Mr. and Mrs. Hogg, says:  "Your brave son has died the noblest death that can be conceived.  I am sure from what I know of him he would give his life gladly, believing as he did, that he was doing his duty, and that in enlisting he was acting in obedience to a sacred call.  I remember him saying so the last time he was at the Manse.  I have seen and talked to hundreds and hundreds of sorely wounded men in these past few days, and what one could not but feel is that they are suffering and dying as their Master suffered and died for the good of the world".

Hawick's Prominent Men In Victorian Days...
...by the late Mr James Edgar.

A native of the Parish of Ashkirk, Frank HOGG as a young lad started his business career as an apprentice clerk with the firm of Messrs.George & James Oliver, Solicitors, Tower Knowe, and remained with the firm throughout his all too short life.

In his early years he identified himself with the literary and mutual improvement societies of the perio, giving evidence in all such associations, of exceptional powers. While enjoying a keen debate,he was always kind and courteous to his opponents.The temperance cause found in him a staunch supporter, and when the
prohibition phase of the movement began he embraced it with great ardour and was one of it's warmest advocates.

Mr HOGG became a member of the Hawick Archaeological Society in 1865, and filled the office of treasurer for the long period of twelve years. He contributed several interesting papers to the Transaactions of the society, one dealing with the early records of his native parish. He also courted the muse,and to the MS. Magazine of the HAwick Literary Society in 1867 he contributed the well known and deservedly popular song,

"I Like Auld Hawick":-
"But I like auld Hawick,and her folk I like,
Her men and maidens free;
Sweet memories dwell in the guid auld toon,
That aye was kind to me."

This song was set to music by Mrs Dumbreck,at Teviotside Terrace, and still retains its popularity and is sung in Hawick circles all over the world. At the farewell supper given to Bailie Michie on the eve of his departure for
South Africa,26th September 1879. Mr HOGG sang this song and publicly acknowledged himself the author.
The Science and Art Classes found him a consellor and guide, but the work with which he may be said to have been most closely identified was the movement for the establishment of a Public Library and Reading Room. A member of the E.U. Congregational Church,Mr HOGG was a tower of strength to that body, and a frequent speaker at social and other gatherings.Musically inclined, he was an enthusiastic member of the church choir. A Conservative in politics,he was the joint secretary and treasurer to the Hawick Conservative Association. He
was a valued public citizen,and Frank Place was named out of respect for his memory,
Mr HOGG having resided in the Allars district. Taken all in all, he was a man of unswerving integrity and of high intellectual attainments and culture.

After but two day's serious illness he died on 17th February,1880, when only 40 years of age.
His remains were interred in Wilton Cemetery.

George HOGG,hoisery manufacturer,was for a number of years senior partner of the firm George HOGG & Sons, Millbank. He was the eldest son of George HOGG who in 1863 took over the hosiery branch Of William Watson & Sons business at Underdamside,when they relinquished that branch and confined themselves entirely
to the manufacture of tweeds.Mr HOGG for many years been manager of the hosiery department.

George HOGG, the subject of our sketch,entered the Town Council in 1886 and two years later was elected magistrate. On Provost Milligan retireing from civic life in 1890, three candidates were proposed for the Provostship.viz., Bailie Morrison, Bailie HOGG and Councillor Charles John Wilson. Bailie Morrison was the
nominee of the Liberals,the other two being Liberal-Unionists. The voting was on strictly party lines. Mr Wilson had the lowest number of votes, and on a final vote between Bailie Morrison and Bailie HOGG the latter was elected. During Provost HOGG's three years' tenure of office no very important municipal scheme
was undertaken, but into all the multifarios routine work of the council the Provost with much energy and enthusiasm, and earned the confidence,respect and goodwill of his colleagues. Mr HOGG was for many years a member of Hawick Parish Council,and of the Combination Poorhouse Committee. Reared in the old East Ena Burgher congregation, Mr HOGG was a pronounced Voluntary and warmly attached to East Bank Church,of which he was anelder,and for some time preses of the congregation.In early life Mr HOGG was a Liberal in politics, but after the Irish Home Rule Bill was introduced by Mr Gladstone he became a Liberal-Unionist and
an enthusiastic worker on behalf of that party. He was a keen bowler and a member of the Hawick Bowling Club, winning the Club's championship medalin 1889. Also interested in cricket,he was seldom absent from the Hawick and Wilton ground on match day. A Freemason, he was initiated into the mysteries of the Craft in the Lodge Hawick No. 111 in 1872. In 1898 he was to re-enter the Town Council when he was returned unopposed for South High Street Ward.

After a brief illness, Mr HOGG died on the 28th September,1900,aged 60 years.
He was survived by his widow-a Melrose lady (Agnes Patterson),who died in
November 1928,aged 81 years.

The son of a Lilliesleaf schoolmaster, to which profession his ancestors for three generations had belonged, John Amos HOGG came to Hawick at an early age and apprenticed himself to the trade of a stockingmaker an occupation he followed through a long lifetime.In the parochial school,under his father's charge,he had acquired a liberal education,which qualified him for the prominent part he played in the public life of his adopted town for over half a century.

When the Chartist movement spread to Hawick in 1840, Mr.HOGG at once identified himself with it and was appointed secretary of the local branch. A keen Reformer from his early manhood,he was an active participant in the demonstration held at Jedburgh previous to the passing of the Reform Bill of 1832.

Mr. HOGG was one of the processionists who marched from Hawick. He was one of the founders of the Co-operative movement in Hawick in 1839,and at the start acted as interim secretary. The first shop aquired by the Society was at the head of Silver Street,the rental being only 6 pound a year.

The premises were open for two hours on two nights a week- Tuesday and Thursday, and from three o'clock on the Saturday afternoon.

Mr.HOGG, as one of the members of the committee, taking his turn regularly behind the counter. In all the local political struggles of the day Mr.HOGG took a very prominent part and exercised considerable influence among his fellow workmen.

He died on the 17th July 1882,in his 87th year.

This buriel ground was opened in 1849 as an extension to St Mary's Churchyard by the Heritors of Hawick Parish and remained under their control until a much later date.
July 31 1849 - was the first interment of the last Cloria Epidemic.There were 141 persons died in Hawick and 56 persons in Wilton as a result of this dreaded disease.

East Border:

Granite Cross.- In loving memory of Adam Laing, died 24th January,1900 aged 81.
Agnes HOGG, his wife, died 22nd October 1902, aged 77 years.
And their sons,Adam,died 19th March 1860,aged 1 year and 5 months; James died 26th September 1909,aged 62 years,and Euphemia,their daughter,died 13 Sep 1918,aged 67 years.

this family see "Wilton Old Churchyard Record" (D3:5,p56,"Transactions,"1938). Adam
was a stocking maker, but was noteworthy for a fine and gentlemenly bearing.

Headstone.- Sacred to the memory of George HOGG who died at 18 Dalkeith Place,
15th November 1898 aged 79 years.Also Margaret Scott his wife who
died 1st June 1918 aged 90 years. Janet HOGG who died 13th May 1879
aged 16 1/2 yrs.And three children who died in infancy. Also
William HOGG who died at Dalkeith Place on the 4th April 1890
aged 21 1/2 years. Also Barbara HOGG wife of William Blake who
died 1 Park St,24th Feb 1894 aged 39 years.And Maggie HOGG who
died at 18 Dalkeith Place,9th Sept.1896 aged 36 years.
