Researchers looking for Hoggs in Scotland

Monica Hogg  -  Most of the Hoggs in my family come from the Selkirkshire area

Mike Hogg   - my areas of interest: Roxburghshire and Selkirkshire, Scotland, and Australia (New South Wales and Victoria).  I am trying to find siblings for my 2x gt grandfather Walter Hogg. He was born about 1777 in Ashkirk, 15 years after his parents, George Hog(g) and Mary Armstrong, married.

Dian Maney  - I have a John HOGG born 23 Apr 1797 to John and Helen SCOTT at Yarrow, SEL.
He married Elizabeth GRIEVE 3 Jun 1821 w.i. John 1822; Helen Scott 1824;
Walter 1826; Jessy 1828; all at Yarrow and Elizabeth 1837. There were
probably further children.

Sharon Hawkins  -  Eliza HOGG born c1855 in Stow Edinburghshire daughter of John Hogg and Betsy
Hill married Peter Kedie 1874 in Galashiels, Selkirk.

George HOGG born c1845 Galashiels, Selkirk married Helen Keddie and had at
least three children. George born 1867, Mary B. born c1875 and John born
c1877 all in Galashiels.

Lynne Isenor -  in Selkirkshire, the borders, and East Lothian/Midlothian, Scotland

Peter Bertram - Berwickshire, Selkirk, Roxburghshire,
Haddingtonshire [Now East Lothian]Mid Lothian, West Lothian

Jamie Dixon  - researching Francis HOGG m. Margaret BRYDON 1816 in
Ettrick Parish, Selkirkshire. Immigrated to Dumfries Twp., Upper Canada
ca. 1829 with children Janet, Margaret, James Smith, and George,
following further with Ellen and Elizabeth.
Francis's descendants

Gail Dodd - Elizabeth Grieve, second child of Walter Grieve and Jannet Veitch, was born 13th December, 1798 at Craiglands, and married John Hogg, a labourer of Threepwood, Selkirk on 3rd June, 1821. John was born 23rd April, 1797 at Yarrow, son of John Hogg and Helen Scott. More on this family.

Graeme Hogg - It is generally believed that my family relates back to one of the brothers of James Hogg, The Ettrick Shepherd. My G-Grandfather Samuel Hogg was born in Co Tyrone, N-Ireland ca1828-30. His father, also Samuel would have been born ca1808-10.

William Hogg & Mary Beattie ran a farm at Stobohope in Peebleshire & most of their family lived in that area & are buried at the Stobo cemetary. David Hogg & Helen Oliver`s family do not appear to match. Robert Hogg & Elizabeth Oliver vanish after their son William was born in 1807, appearing again in 1828 when they had a daughter (Elizabeth) christened at Kilmory on the Isle of Arran.

In 1833 an Isabella Hogg married William Paisley at Kilmory & had 4 daughters there. They had a 5th at Ettrick then in 1846 migrated to Broome, New York. They had 9 in total.

As census records show no other Hogg`s on Arran, I believe Isabella to be a daughter of Robert & Elizabeth. In your family lists you indicate that Robert died in 1833 & that Elizabeth went to America that same year. I am hoping you may be able to pass on to me any data regarding this, whether she was accompanied or where she may have settled. I have strong feelings that the Samuel I am researching, if a son may have have followed sometime later as I am unable to find any record of dearh in either Scotland or Ireland. Any information you can provide me I will truely be greatfull for, & if I can contribute to you I certainly will.

Joyce Peat - My Grandfather James Hogg was born in Galashiels Scotland on the 22nd August1870.Would you know of any connection to the information you have?.Any help would be greatfully received.

Nancy Cook - trying to find information on William Hogg born in Selkirk married Elizabeth Crawford. Later son? William Hogg married Mary Ritchie. This William moved to Aryshire. At the moment we do not have dates and cannot find links in the LDS family search. Do you have info on this part of the Hogg family? Thankyou

Stuart Hogg - My Hogg ancestors come from Selkirk. I'm looking for any information on William Hogg and Janet Lees. They were married on April 5, 1797 in Selkirk. She left Scotland around 1805 for Thamesford, Ontario, near London. Then known as East Nissouri Township, Oxford North. They had one son, George Hogg anywhere between 1799 and 1801, but my family records have it as 1800. Janet was born in 1773, as shown on her gravestone in Thamesford. I would like to know what happened. Why he never left Scotland, what he did for a living, and the years he was alive. I believe he was born on November 9, 1766. I would also like to know his parents names and more, if anyone knows. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Helen Thompson - Hogg Family connection in Donegal, Ireland 1800's? James Hogg, son of George Hogg of Selkirk

I was recently given details of part my family history ON MY FATHER'S SIDE by my father's first cousin, Charles Rogers. This has been put together by Samuel M. Fleming, part of the Hogg connection is is unclear, maybe you could enlighten me about George Hogg who married Jane Finley.

Excerpt from notes by Samuel M. Fleming on part of the Hogg family history is as follows:

" The first record we have of the Hogg Family is from Scotland where George Hogg married Jane Finley at Selkirk.

His son, James Hogg, came over to Ireland and married Jane Taylor of Coolbouy, Donegal.

Later records disclose that John Hogg - son of James and Jane owned a homestead and one hundred and twenty acres at Illistrin.

Sometime between 1860 - 1870 Charles Hogg inherited from his uncle, James Taylor, a farm (104 acres) and a farmhouse at Coolbouy, and outlying at Cloughro (66 acres); a dwelling house at Drumnahoe, and estates at Carronagh.

GEORGE HOGG Scotland married Jane Finley

JAMES HOGG his son married Jane Taylor, Coolbouy

JOHN HOGG Illistrin son of James and Jane married Margaret Torrens, Doen Glebe, Newmilles having issue four sons, James, Joseph, Charles (born 1839) John and three daughters, Jane (born 1840's), Margaret and Ana Liya.

JOHN HOGG JNR married Fanny Torrens and emigrated to America. His second wife was Catherine Park daughter Henery Park of Glencas Letterkenny.

JAMES HOGG married Elizabeth Torrens and emigrated to America.

MARGARET HOGG married William Henery Park, Glencas, and emigrated to America (no children).

ANA LIYA Liya never married.

JOSEPH HOGG He married Margaret Phillips, a lady of a good Annandale family in 1820.

JANE HOGG daughter of Margaret and John married James, son of the Rev Nathaniel P. Rogers, Gortnavern, having issue two sons and four daughters.

NB James Hogg (1770 - 1835) Scottish Poet, known as the "Ettrick Shepherd was one of our ancestors. I have so far benen unable to find out what relation he was to the James Hogg that came to Illistrin. Encyclopedia's that I have do not give names of other members of his family. There are also books in Windy Hall which have been by him. These don't help either. Maybe some of you could help me here. You might find his writings in the City Library"

If you are interested in any of the above can send you a photocopy of what I have.
