Hello Everyone,

Hope you all had a great summer, I sure did! I'm back in Fort St. John and, as usual scrambling to catch up after an extended holiday! Fall is in full swing and the autumn colours are breath taking, there is talk of snow, unfortunately, I'm not looking forward to the long winter!

Two new Hockley researchers happened to surf onto the Hockley website and, both were surprised at what they found. Thanks to everyone's support, our website continues to grow. Also, thanks to Rootsweb for offering free unlimited space for genealogy web pages!

Special thanks to Ray Hockley <hockleyr@btopenworld.com> for the three photographs he took at the Theipval First World War memorial in France. I will upload those photos to our Hockley Page of Remembrance, as soon as I can.

I finally managed a visit with Joy and Harry Hockley on one of my trips through the Okanagan Valley, this summer. It was wonderful to meet you both. You live in a lovely part of the province and I will be thinking of you this winter when we are freezing our buns here in the north. Again, it was great meeting you and good luck with your search.

I think that's about all this time around.

Yours on the Hockley Ancestral Trail,
Darlene Heal

Dear Darlene,
I was idly surfing the web and typed in my surname and 'voila', suddenly I am in a world of Hockleys !
My name is David William Hockley, I was born in Birmingham, England in 1953 and emigrated to Kendallville, Indiana U.S.A. in 1977. I am descended from Samuel Hockley born in Paddington Middlesex in 1778 and who died in Birmingham in 1865. I have a number of Hockley relatives and contacts with other descendants of this Samuel Hockley.

Darlene,

I just wanted to say thank you for the Hockley website.  I found the information useful.

I am descended from William Hockley baptised 27 June 1819 in Takeley, and who married Mary Felstead in 1841. William Hockley died 2 March 1901 in Little Canfield aged 82, and Mary died 8 January 1907, aged 84 in Little Canfield.

I knew William Hockley's father was named Henry, and he died on 14 September 1846 in Takeley, aged 52 but I didn't know William's mother's name, so your website was helpful.  Henry Hockley was living alone in 1841, so I guess his wife must have died before then.

William and Mary's son, George Hockley, baptised 29 September 1850 (born 31st August 1850) was my great great grandfather, and he moved to
Chelmsford, and then to Kent, where he died 6th January 1912.

I am off to Germany tomorrow, so if you reply, it'll be a few weeks before I respond.

With kind regard and thanks again,
Greg Taylor

I was just given the personal effects of an uncle I had only seen three times.  In it are a lot of old photographs.  Some of a Fred Hockley & his wife Queenie of Western Canada, Mary & Henry Hockley & Lottie.  Also Dolly,
one of Marth taken circa 1920.

My Uncle was Joseph Hockley born 1930 in or near Walkerton, Ontario, died childless a few years back - my Dad is Ernest Hockley. Their father was Harry Henry Hockley born in England but have no dates (around 1909 I think) their mother was Mary Box - don't know Harry Henry’s father's name.

Do any of these names ring a bell with you?

I'm trying to find information on a FREDERICK HOCKLEY (1808-1885) living in the Hoxton, Croydon and London areas of the UK. It's a long shot I know, but all contributions gratefully received.

I'm researching for a new book on eccentric Victorian gentleman. There's a book of his letters - "The Rosicrucian Seer - Magical writings of Frederick Hockley" by John Hamill.

I'll quote from the back cover:

"Frederick Hockley was a major influence on the spiritual revival of the nineteenth century, though little is known of the man, his life of what happened to his manuscripts."

What we do know:

Educated till age 8 at Captain Webb's School at Hoxton, worked in
Catherine Street, Covent Garden, London as a bookseller.

Unknown wife died in the 1850's

Was an accountant by the early 1840's

Lived in the 1870's at 3 Raymond Buildings, Grays Inn, London.

Annual trips to Alnwick, Northumberland (North England).

If you can assist me in any way I'll be forever in your debt.

Thanks,  Nick Murrie

Hello Everyone,

I have returned from holidays and slowly making my way through my email INBOX. If you wrote me directly, I will reply as soon as I can. Our weather in Northern Canada has finally turned nice, the snow is all melted except for the shaded areas, and this means time to work in the yard with less time on the computer.

I wanted to let everyone know that we finally have a Hockley Family Genealogy Forum at Genealogy.com. It has been a long time coming, years in fact. Some of you may know this website as GENFORUM, it is one of my favourite sites to post genealogy queries.

Hello List,
While not actually actively researching the Hockley name at this time (although I have a three times great granny Hockley), I carry out extensive research of the parish registers of the County of Essex, England for my Francis family members. During my trawling of the registers of St Mary the Virgin Parish Church, Great Leighs I came across the two following entries, which may be of interest as that parish does not appear to be one that figures largely in the Great Hockley Family Tree:-

Essex Record Office (ERO) reference D/P137/1/5 (Register of Burials 1704-1812)
Ann Hockley (from Braxted) buried the 29th December 1809
(I think that Braxted is split into two parishes i.e Great Braxted and Little Braxted)

ERO reference T/R 229/1 (Transcript of marriages)
Nathaniel Hockley and Ann Howres (or Owers) married 6th July 1620
(from transcript only, original entry not checked)

Hope it's of some use to someone

Mick Loxdale
Orpington, Kent

For attention of Darlene Heal (or whoever now is admin for the Rootsweb Hockley web site) please note the new email address, as my old one is still shown for my entry in the list of researchers.

The research material you contribute remains your property and you can add or have it removed at anytime. If you have photo or document images, they can also be added. My research into the TUTTLEBY family from Essex, England has shown that my 4 x great grandmother was a Mary Hockley. Mary was born circa 1838 in Essex, her parents were James Hockley and Johanna Giggins. Mary married Henry Tuttleby and they had 9 children and are thought to have lived around West Thurrock, Essex. They immigrated to Australia in 1853 with three of their nine children. Henry Tuttleby died in 1855 and she married James Bogle in 1858. Mary's parental information comes from her marriage certificate to James Bogle.

At last, we exist! Do we perceive Darlene's hand behind this list's creation?

Saw this list on tonight's New Lists. How many are subscribed?

My HOCKLEY's have spent the last 6 generations in Australia. The earliest
confirmed member of my line is one James H. The first positive confirmation
of his existence is his marriage to the widow Susannah HART (nee EDIS) in
Adelaide South Australia in 1856. His death certificate simply list his
birthplace as England, and a hospital admission record in 1895 indicates he
was born in Cambridgeshire England. These and other documents suggest he was
born around 1830 to 1835 inclusive.

Any advice on the birth of this fellow?

Looking forward to much activity on this list.
