The firm of Stuart & Co. [sic] first appears in Buxton trade directory listings in 1895 (Kelly), although another directory of the same year (Bulmer) gives Harry Stewart.  Both are shown with premises at 6 The Quadrant in Buxton which, until 1891, belonged to B.W. Bentley.  Kelly's 1899 directory shows the firm of T. Stewart & Co. at this address, and a cabinet card from the 1890s has a slightly different spelling.  It seems likely that these are all the same family, and that the Stewart/Steward firm took over the business soon after the death of B.W. Bentley's widow in 1891.  Unfortunately, no census entries have been found for any Steward family in Buxton.  By 1912, the firm had moved to premises at 51 Spring Gardens in Buxton, while the studio at 6 The Quadrant was being operated by another photographer, W.T. Hosler.
