Hageman

Hannah Hoagland (also known as Ann and Anna - daughter of Harmanus Hoagland and Jane Vroom)
born November 21, 1785
baptized not at RRC
died April 28, 1866 age 80.5.1 (Her grave stone looks like it states 1868 [?]; however, it may just be that the numbers are worn. Whatever the case, her death did occur in 1866. Her will, WB I 99, was proved on May 21, 1866. James and Herman Hageman were the executors.
buried at the Readington Reformed Church Cemetery

Married on February 12, 1806 by the reverend of the Harlingen Reformed Church.

Andrew Hageman
born May 5, 1779
baptized May 30, 1779 at the Harlingen Reformed Church. It is a record written in Dutch - his name was recorded as Endro [Andrew] the father is listed as Jacobs Hegeman and mother was Anne
died February 28, 1860 age 80.9.23 of heart disease at Branchburg - he was ill for 4 weeks. His will, WB H 178, was proved March 15, 1860. His sons, James and Herman Hageman, were the executors.
buried Readington Reformed Church Cemetery
Son of Jacobus (James) Hageman from the Harlingen area (baptized December 25, 1754 at the Harlingen Reformed Church son of Andrias and Marya - November 2, 1779) and Ann Skillman (Ann was baptized August 20, 1757 at Harlingen Reformed Church - ?). They were married on August 13, 1778 at Harlingen.
After the death of James, Ann is believed to have married Abraham Van Pelt from Six Mile Run and moved to Fairfax County, VA - leaving Andrew behind.

Ann Skillman was the daughter of Thomas (around 1727 at Newtown, Long Island, NY - December 1809 at Somerset county) and Maria Beekman (around 1733 at NY? - June 1819 at Somerset county). Thomas and Maria are buried in the Beekman Cemetery on the Millstone River near Griggstown. Maria was the daughter of Gerardus Christopher Beekman and Catherine Van Dyke. A Maria Skillman was baptized on December 27, 1772 at Harlingen. Thomas and Maria's son, Jacob Skillman (August 28, 1764 - April 13, 1854 at Three Mile Run), married a Mary Hageman (April 18, 1767 - October 25, 1840).

Andrew was a ward of 1) John Nokes & 2) Abraham Skillman. Andrew Hageman, of Somerset [the township was not mentioned in the records], son of James, deceased, being out of wardship of John Nokes, makes choice of Abraham Skillman as guardian - dated October 4, 1796. It also mentions John Ten Brook and John Van Pelt. There was an Abraham Skillman (July 20, 1758 NY - November 10, 1838 in Somerset county, NJ) son of Thomas Skillman and Mary Beekman. This Abraham married circa 1787 to Lucretia Van Zandt (1763 in Hempstead, Nassau county, New York - December 31, 1851).

In the records of the Readington Reformed Church, Andrew is listed as an elder on June 5, 1834. A Mary Ann Hageman was listed as a member of the congregation for 1826-27.

The following verse appears on Andrew's grave stone:
Lord reckon that the suffering of
This present time are not worthy to
Compare with the glory which shall in
Revealed to us

In the records of the Harlingen Reformed Church (January 7, 1805), an Andrew Hageman was conveyed pew #4 on the east side of the gallery - 1/5th part. Is this the same Andrew?

An Alexander Van Pelt died in Montgomery in the summer of 1819. Andrew R. Hageman was one of the executors of his estate. ***** Look for the Van Pelt genealogy ***** A Rachel Stryker (baptized March 5, 1785 at Six Mile Run - ?) married an Anreas Hageman - son of Andries (1719 - 1774) and Maria Terhune. A John Stryker (1774 - June 15, 1840 in Ohio) married an Elizabeth Hageman (1780 - June 30, 1821). She was the daughter of Dennis Hageman and Pamelia Van Dykey.

Andrias Hageman and Maria baptized 5 children at the Harlingen Reformed Church: Jacobus on December 25, 1754; Joseph on January 14, 1743; Denys on January 24, 1746; Yohannis on May 2, 1752; Gerrit on September 5, 1758.

The will of Jacobus Hegeman in 1785 does not mention a Andrew Hageman. ***** Read this will again *****

In early membership records of the Harlingen Reformed Church, Andrew R. Hageman and Jecholiah Skillman are entered on the same date (around 1832 ?). Is this Andrew the one that I am searching for - or was he the one who was baptized on November 17, 1771 - son of Joseph and Lucresia. He may have died in 1857. Is this the Joseph Hageman who was born June 5, 1757, baptized at Harlingen on June 23, 1765 [?] son of Yosep and Hannah and died on August 20, 1796? In the records of Harlingen, A John Hageman and Lucretia Polhemus married January 18, 1818.

There was a James Hageman who died prior to May 1, 1816. In the Letters of Administration (dated April 20, 1816 book AG AB-133), the following people are mentioned: Frederick Frelinghuysen, James Garretson and Urias Van Cleef. There were notes against Garret Garretson; Isaac Hageman; Isaac Van Cleef and others. James had considerable personal property. There was a Jacobus Hageman who died prior to October 1800. His estate papers mention James Linn and James Ten Eyck.

On October 27, 1854, Andrew was on a committee to create the new part of the Readington Cemetery.

I do not know if the 1830 and 1840 census material relates to this Andrew. In the 1830 census for Montgomery (p. 115), 1 male 15-20; 1 male 50-60; 2 females 15-20; 1 female 40-50; 1 female 60-70 [Andrew's mother ?]. In the 1840 census for Montgomery (p. 131), 1 male 0-5; 2 males 5-10; 1 male 10-15; 1 male 15-20; 1 20-30; 1 male 40-50; 1 female 0-5; 1 female 15-20; 1 female 40-50. Also, in the 1840 census for Montgomery (p. 155), 1 male 10-15; 1 male 15-20; 1 male 60-70; 1 female 0-5; 1 female 15-20; 1 female 20-30; 1 female 50-70.

In the 1850 census for Branchburg (p. 444), Andrew 71 farmer $6500 or $1500; Ann 65; Andrew Jr. 25; Margaret 18; John 22 farmer; Elsey Elizabeth 17. In the 1855 state census for Branchburg, Andrue Haegaman - 4 males; 2 females; 1 foreign born male; 1 white male between 5-16. In the 1860 census for Branchburg (p. 19), Gilbert Kershow 26 farmer $12000 - $1500; Elsie E. 27; Ephraim Meyers 16 farm laborer; Peter Daily 18 farm laborer; Sarah Smith 17, Ann Hageman 75 mother-in-law.

In Readington Reformed Church Cemetery, near to Andrew, there is a Mary Ann Hageman who died March 18, 1831 age 83.1.22 (born about January 26, 1748). Could this be Andrew's mother? At North Branch Cemetery, there is a Jacobus Hageman (January 19, 1734 - ? October 20, 1787 age 53.0.1). Could this be Andrew's father?

Andrew's first will, May 16, 1846, mentions his wife, James, Herman and Andrew. Will of June 24, 1852 mentions Elsey, Andrew and John. Mentioned 4 volume Scott Family bible to be given to his son, Andrew. Other wills Hageman wills to research are: #1140R and 1816 #1678R

In the will of Ann [Hannah] Hageman written October 19, 1861, it mentions: Elsie Ten Eyck, sister; Elsie Elizabeth Kershow, daughter, to receive a bible; Jane Hoagland, daughter - her son, sAndrew, to receive a bible in Bound Brook Church; Mary Ann Lane, daughter, deceased, had children; James, son; Herman, son, to receive spectacles; Peter, son; Andrew, son; John, son.

In the Lamington Presbyterian Church cemetery, there is a Jacob Hageman, son of Andrew and Ann, who died March 2, 1810 age 3 years and 10 months (born around May 1806). I doubt if this is a son of the Andrew and Ann listed above.

Thomas Skillman married an Ann Skillman on December 8 [?], 1816 in the records of the Harlingen Reformed Church.

In the Beekman cemetery: Thomas Skillman died December 1809 age 82. See Will WB A 223 dated January 2, 1810. His grave stone has the following verse:
Afflictions sore long time I bore,
My body racked with pain,
Now death is come and called me home.
I shall with Jesus reign.

His wife, Mary Beekman died June - 1819 age 86, is buried besides him. Her grave stone has the following verse:
Father, I give up my spirit
And trust it in thy hand,
My dying flesh shall rest in hope
And rise at thy command.

In the records of the North Branch Reformed Church, James Cyphers, son of Clark Cyphers and Mary Cole, of Readington married Gertrude Lane, daughter of Cornelius Lane and Gertrude Hageman, on March 30, 1871. Is there a connection?

He married Susanna Van Doren of Readington (July 22, 1817 [not baptized at RRC] - February 21, 1902 age 85.7.- of senility and brain softening lasting 1 year at Readington. Her residence at the time of death was at Whitehouse) on February 13, 1862 by Reverend Van Liew of the Readington Reformed Church. She is buried at Readington. Susan was the daughter of Christopher Van Doren (April 17, 1771 - August 5, 1848 age 77.3.19) and Ester Lanning (May 1, 1777 - March 11, 1860 age 82.10.10. She was the daughter of Robert Lanning and Judith Baker). They were married on April 27, 1796. Christopher was a farmer and lived in Stanton. Christopher's will is dated November 1, 1847 and mentions his 'beloved' wife and many children including Susan. Susan had been married before John. She married Mathias Cramer (about November 11, 1821 at North Pleasant Run - September 11, 1856 age 35.5.0 of dysentery [the state record lists him dying on the 10th at Lebanonville]. He was listed as being a farmer. His father was named Mathias and had died a few years before his son's death) on November 8, 1842 by the minister of the Stanton Reformed Church. The church marriage record lists that they were both from Readington at the time of marriage. Mathias and their daughter are buried at the Readington Reformed Church Cemetery. Susan Van Doren Lane lived at Three Bridges and Readington.

Mathias and Susan had the following children: Hetty M.; Augustus; and Sarah Jane (May 7, 1852 - baptized July 3, 1853 at the Stanton Reformed Church - September 26, 1856 age 4.5.0). John and Sarah had the following children: Theodore of Arkansas and a daughter.

The Stanton Reformed Church marriage record states that Elijah was from Raritan and Aletta from Readington.

In the Rockaway Reformed Church Cemetery there are Mathais Cramer (about January 2, 1767 - May 27, 1850 age 83.4.25) and Aletta Tunison (around October 29, 1870 - August 4, 1868 age 97.9.5) - any relationship? There is a record of a Matthias Crammer having died on February 24, 1840 in the records of the Clover Hill Reformed Church. He was buried at St. John's Cemetery. Any relationship? They were married on October 27, 1835. They and some of their children are buried at Readington. A William C. Van Doren became a member of the Readington Reformed Church on May 15, 1840 via confession. Both are buried at the Readington Reformed Church Cemetery.

From History of Mercer and Henderson Counties: Andrew was one of the prominent pioneer settlers of Raritan, Illinois. He was the proprietor of the Prairie Side Park. Spent his youth in school and at the age of 22, he commenced a course of study with a view to the ministry, and accordingly entered the sophomore class of Rutgers's University, in September 1847. In less than a year, failing health compelled the abandonment of mental occupation and a return to the pursuits of agriculture on his father's farm. He moved to New Brunswick in 1854 and embarked in the business of manufacturing and selling clothing and making up goods to order in partnership with S. R. Walker. In April 1856, he emigrated to Raritan, Illinois and commenced making a home on the then treeless, fenceless, unplowed prairie [80 acres]. The first building in Raritan was then in process of erection, and the few settlers who had first arrived (the previous summer and fall) were finishing their dwellings just enough to make them comfortable. Mr Hageman commence at once to cultivate the virgin soil, plant trees, build fences and a dwelling, naming his chosen heritage Prairieside, to which the suffix "Park" or farm is of late years appended by the villagers, as the Grove, or, Hageman's Grove. Here are held the pioneer's festival, 4th of July, harvest home, political meetings, etc. Mr. Hageman removed to Bushnell, McDonough county, Illinois [spring 1868], and commenced to editing and publishing of a newspaper which he named the "Bushnell Weekly Record." He continued the same for four or five years, when declining in health he gave the place to A. W. Van Dyke. Since that time he has been an occasional contributor for several county papers. [He then engaged in grain buying at Swan Creek] After a residence of six years and a half in Bushnell, Mr. Hageman returned to his Prairieside fame. A few years later, he sold twenty acres from the south side for $1,500 cash in hand and commenced the furniture and undertaking business in the village [for seven years], the latter branch still continued by him. Mr. Hageman has been closely identified with the rise and progress of the Reformed church in Raritan, and also the Sabbath school connected therewith, of which he was chosen superintendent at the time of its organization, in 1856, and was re-elected three succeeding years and again at a subsequent period [he was also an Elder]. Twenty-five years after the organization of the school he delivered, by appointment, a historical address on the occasion of its quarter centennial anniversary. He became somewhat famous as the Prairieside poet through the publication of various essays in rhyme, some of which will be found elsewhere in this work, among which may be mentions "lights and Shadows of Prairie-life in the Early Day," "The Miseries of Drunkenness," "Retrospection," "Be Happy," "Vain Regrets," "the Old School-house." Mr. Hageman is also a composer of music, and has also some mechanical genius, and among his many business engagements Mr. H. has found time to devote a little study to mechanical skill, having constructed several violins and a few violoncellos. The last violin he constructed was made of seventy-five pieces of wood grown by him on his farm. He was elected justice of the peace for Bedford precinct, Henderson county, in the spring of 1882. [Prairieside Park is one half mile east of Raritan.]

Andrew's obituary appeared on the front page of The Raritan Reporter dated May 18, 1898. It read:
AN EARLY SETTLER GONE.
ANDREW HAGEMAN PASSES AWAY.
Other Deaths.
Andrew Hagaman died at his home in Prairieside Park one-half mile east of Raritan, Ill., Friday morning, May 13, 1898, age 78 years, 10 months and 16 days.
The deceased was born in Somerset county, New Jersey, June 27, 1824. He was the ninth in a family of eleven children, but is survived by only two of the family - a sister, Mrs. Elsie E. Kershow of this city, and a brother John, who resides in New Jersey.
The subject of this sketch remained at home with his parents until he had attained his majority, when he commenced a course of study in 1847 with a view to taking up the work of the ministry, but in less than a year his health failed an he returned to the farm, and there he remained until 1854, when he removed to New Brunswick where he engaged in the manufacture and sale of clothing until 1856, when he emigrated to Illinois and purchased 80 acres of land on which a part of the village of Raritan now stands. This he proceeded to develop and improve from the virgin prairie, and is due to his enterprise and love of the beautiful in nature that the people of the community have a place to celebrate the anniversaries of our American independence, etc., sheltered from the scorching rays of the sun by protecting branches of the trees he planted and cared for so jealousy in those pioneer days, and which now stand as living monuments to his forethought.
In the spring of 1868 he removed to Bushnell, Ill., and began the publication of the Weekly Record. After three years he retired from the newspaper business and for a time was engaged in grain buying at Swan Creek.
He returned to Raritan in the early "seventies" and embarked in the furniture and undertaking business, which he continued for seven years. Since then he has enjoyed a life of leisure in his Prairieside home. Being of a literary and ingenious nature he took great pleasure of late years with his library, which contained about 800 volumes, including the Encyclopedia Britannica, together with a wide range of standard historical and scientific works, and in painting, drawing, etc., in which he was quite proficient.
The deceased was a member of the Reformed church in this place almost from its beginning, and had served in the consistory as an Elder. He was also a superintendent of its Sabbath school in 1857.
He was a liberal supporter of the home paper, and by his death we feel that we have lost a warm personal friend.
On the 28th day of November 1849 he was united in marriage to Miss Margaret Kershaw. They became the parents of six children, four of whom - Mrs. A. W. VanDyke and Herman, who reside in St. Louis, Mo; Mrs. W. B. Rhodes, of Monmouth, and Frank E. of this place - together with the wife survive him.
Mr. Hageman had quite a wide reputation as a poet, and a number of his poems have appeared in some of the leading newspapers and magazines of the country and in this paper. The following acrostic reverie is from his pen:

Youth's happy years too swiftly glide:
Oh! could they span Life's river
Unhastened by its flowing tide,
Ne'er cease-but, stretching far and wide,
Go on, and on, forever!

Life seems a voyage-time a stream,
In which we, gently gliding,
Forget all else-as in a dream-
Except the joys and hopes that gleam
So bright, yet unabiding!

Shall living friends and kindred meet
When safe beyond the river?
Enraptured there each other greet,
Exulting most at Jesus' feet,
To love and praise forever?

Death's but a change to raise us higher,
Release our captive spirit,
Ecstatic bliss, hopes long desire,
