Hale, House and Related Families, by Jacobus; He was early at Saybrook, Ct., but appears little of record, and in 1660 settled in Norwich with his second wife and family, proprietary rights being taken for his son Stephen and his stepson Thomas Bingham. He was made a freeman, October 1663, at the same time with Simon Huntington and other Norwich men. The will of Tobiah Colles of Saybrook, 12 Aug. 1664, mentions "my Land on Black Hall Playne which I bought of William Backhus." The will of William Backus, Sr., dated 12 June 1661 and signed with his initials. His inventory, taken 7 June 1664, and recorded in Hartford, was taken by Thomas Leffingwell and John Birchard;

His first child, Matthew, may have been born at the Point in 1637, but this has not been confirmed. He was in Branford in 1638 and was among the first settlers of Hartford in 1642. By 1651, he was in East Lyme, having purchased large tracts of land along the Niantic River; Records report that "Matthew Beckwith, age abt. 70, missing his way in the very dark night, fell from a ledge of rocks about 20 or 30 feet high and beat his brains against a stone he fell upon.";
