John, Richard
and Mary Brownson of Hartford, Connecticut. Three vols., compiled by
Col.
Herbert Bronson Enderton, 1969; TAG 38, vol. 4, Oct. 1962, TAG 40
(1964);
"Mary, sister of John and Richard BROWNSON/BRONSON came to America
with them,
probably in 1635. She was a teenager at the time, and a rather
rebellious one
at that. Without a mother's guidance and love, with only her brother
John and
his wife, Frances, to raise her, she became a very willful girl.
In the winter of 1639/40 and the early Spring of 1640, four young
men, John
OLMSTEAD, Jonathan RUDD, John PIERCE and Nicholas OLMSTEAD, got into
trouble
for "Wanton dalliances, Lacivious caridge and fowle mysdemenors at
sundry times with Mary BRUNSON."
Mary and the first three boys were "corrected."
Nichols OLMSTEAD was fined and ordered to "stand vpon the Pyllery at
Hartford." Obviously, something had to be done about Mary, and she
was hastily married to a much older man, Nicholas DISBOROUGH, on
April 2, 1640. We can only speculate, but it is likely she was
accompanied by a sizeable dowry. She apparently then became a normal
mother and housewife, though, as nothing more of a wild or unusual
nature is known about her."
