1861 Raised a Company in 21 st Mississippi., Capt., Col., Seven Days, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg.
August 1863 Brig. Gen., Chickamauge, Knoxville, In Kershaw's division in the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Shenandoah
Valley campaign, He was wounded at Berryville.
Commanded a military district in Mississippi.

He left the army for two years to be come a engineer.
He rejoined the army as a engineer.

August 1861 Maj. and aide to McClellan.
April 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers.
Topographical engineer in Peninsula campaign.
Commanded 3rd Division - V Corps at Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville.
Commanded 2nd Division - III Corps at Gettysburg.
July 1863 Promoted Maj. Gen. of Volunteers.
Chief of staff to Meade.
Commanded II Corps after Hancock left field service at Petersburg, Appomattox.

Army service as Commander of the Corps of Engineers.
