Edith's Story Page Four

My granddaughters ask me about the changes I have seen. Hard to know where to start.

In 1900 when I was born, Vaudeville was the most popular form of entertainment. Growing up, we had movies at 10 cents for admission..now DVD, Television, and movies even on the internet.

Horse and buggy were our 'taxi cabs'. My Grandpa Noble used a team of oxen for transportation. One day he had to go into town about 5 miles away for groceries. I went with him in the wagon drawn by 2 oxen. At the store, I remember he bought us cheese and Fig Newtons to eat on the way home. First time I ever had Fig Newtons. Another time, he had shot a deer and wanted to take some of it to a friend. Arthur and I went along in the wagon and we stayed there for dinner. I remember they had oyster stew and Arthur did not like it.

Transportation has changed. My first plane ride was in a propeller plane. Tommy and I flew over the Detroit area. Jackie said her first plane ride was also on a propeller plane flying from Chicago to NY with Bob before they were married. Now we have put men on the moon, racecars at 200+ mph., planes that cross the Atlantic in 3 hours.

Women can vote now. Until I was 20, they could not vote.

Food of course, was cheaper. Milk 5 cents a quart and sugar 5 cents a pound. I can remember when it was 2 cents to mail a letter and mail was delivered twice a day to the house.

Editor's note: Hopefully there will be more to follow.
