Edith's Story Page Three
In Hudson Falls, I worked at SIEMAN'S - a dry goods store on Johns Street. A
large house across the street was turned into an emergency hospital during the
flu epidemic. Wiley's was another store I worked for. Just before I left
home, I worked helping make shopping bags. My boss was also my Sunday School
teacher and had helped me get the job. I really liked sales work better.
I left home in 1922. Ken and Mother were living in Hudson Falls. They stayed
with Uncle John and others. I went to Florida and worked at the Hotel Ridgewood
in Daytona, FL. From there I went to Atlantic City, NJ to work in another
hotel. While there, I took an exam for Western Union and was sent to
Philadelphia to school to learn their new method of telegraphy.
I met Thomas Burns when I was working in Philadelphia for the Western Union.
We were introduced by a friend of mine, Joseph Marks. I thought he was
handsome and he was very pleasant and thoughtful. I was working and Tom was
going to business school, so we did not have a lot of time for activities. We
enjoyed going to movies and plays. I remember that he took me on a train ride
to see his family who lived in Wilkes-Barre. We decided to get married soon
after Christmas of 1924. I don't remember that there was any special proposal.
We just seemed to drift into an understanding.
The wedding was at St. Peter
and Paul's in Philadelphia on February 21, 1925. I wore a gold satin dress
trimmed in beads and a hat of the same color. Our attendants were Joseph Marks
and Rita Brown. We did not have a Honeymoon right away. In September, we went
to Detroit and stopped at Niagara Falls. Then we took a boat from Buffalo to
Detroit. I was able to get a transfer so worked for Western Union in Detroit
also. Tommy got work at Budd Co. and later at Ford. Burroughs was advertising
for trainees to take classes. Tommy applied, but he was older than they wanted
to hire. He offered to take the classes without pay. They were impressed with
his ambition and they paid him to take the training. He worked for Burroughs
until he retired in 1961.
