Edith's Story Page Two

We also had nice neighbors 2 houses down. .. Mr. and Mrs. HOWE. When Clara and Cliff were married, they stayed at her house till they got their own place. Mrs. Howe would take me shopping and to the movies for company. When she moved to Greenwich, she would send me carfare to take the trolley and spend the weekend there.

Papa worked for a farmer when we were in Fort Ann. He would take wagonloads of produce to Lake George and stop at Aunt Lila's house on the way back. She would send back big molasses cookies for us. Grandpa (David) Washburn and Uncle David lived with her. She died young (when I was 13). Aunt Lila and Momma were the same age.

The family was back together when Ken was about 1 ½ years. I really only remember one serious illness. I had diphtheria when I was 12 and the house was quarantined. Then Papa came down with Typhoid Fever and had to be sent to the Hospital in Glens Falls, as there was no hospital in Hudson Falls. The Dr. had to arrange to have the quarantine lifted so they could move him to the hospital. When I recovered, he was still in the hospital. I took the trolley up to see him but could not find him in the ward. He had grown a beard and I did not recognize him at all.

I finished all but the last half-year of High School. Did very well in all subjects, but especially liked History and Geometry. On my 8th grade Regents exams (which you had to pass to be promoted) I scored 99. I felt bad I did not get 100.. not for me, but so my Teacher could have a student who got 100 on Regents.

One of the happiest memories I have of growing up was the summer I was 17. I spent that summer at Lake Side, NY ( on an outlet to Lake Champlain) with my Uncle John and Aunt Anna. There were 4 of us girls; Marion and May Hunt, Gretchen Hill and myself. My Uncle ran a small hotel and held dances and served fish dinners every other week. Marion and Gretchen helped in the dining room and May and I helped my Aunt in the kitchen. We girls were not allowed to go into the dance area but could go in during the week. We went in and danced together then. One time, my Uncle L.D. Bull came to dinner. When he heard I was there, he came to the kitchen and wanted me to come dance with him. Of course, Aunt Anna could not say NO to a guest, so I did get to dance with L.D.
