My grandfather, Harlan Phelps is buried in Grafton Vermont in the Village, Row
20-Right. A description of his monument as found in the Cemetery records in
the Grafton Historical Society is as follows:
granite, massive, rectangular, with long dimension n.-s.; high 2-step base with
PHELPS in raised letters in horizontal intaglio panel on polished riser of
upper step, e. face. Top of monument, which is smooth but unpolished,
resembles a hip roof with ridgepole. On edges of east and west sides of
"roof", in center, a triangular element bearing the word REST in low relief,
and below it, leaf fronds with crossed stems, also in low relief. All four
sides of monument polished, with smooth borders; in each upper corner, an acorn
and 2 oak leaves with crossed stems. Epitaphs incised on east face with square
punctuation. No grave markers present.
Surrounding the plot, a fence consisting of four square granite posts, 4 1/2
feel high with pyramidal tops, one in each corner, with double cast-iron chains
between them A cast-iron tassel holds chains together in middle of each side.
Also buried there are his first and second wives (my grandmother was his third)
and the epitaphs read as follows:
name: Phelps, Harlan
born: Nov. 23, 1838
died: Apr. 26, 1905
Stella A. Spring his wife
Feb. 29, 1844
Sept. 26, 1865
Jennie E. Wilson his wife
Feb. 20, 1838
Mar. 27, 1896
Harlan's brother Francis and his wife Acsah are buried nearby in Row 22-Right.
The description of their monuments are:
marble, rectangular, with curved top; 2-step base. Top edge and side edges
beveled, side edges for 3/4 of the way down. Name in raised letters in
semicircular intaglio panel; rest of epitaph incised. Square punctuation used.
Decorative dash, centered, below epitaph
Apparently they each have such a monument and the epitaphs are as follows:
name: Francis Phelps
born:
died: February 25, 1888
age: 71
Achsah L. Hoar
wife of
Frances Phelps
died Mar. 17, 1906
age 86 yrs.
Hopefully I will be able to get some photographs of these graves this summer
and I will put them on this page.
