May Wilson Phelps Hunt Kennedy

Recollections of Her Daughter

May Wilson Phelps was born in a bedroom on the second floor of the then called "Phelps Hotel" (Now the Tavern) in Grafton, Vermont on February 6, 1901. She was Anna and Harlan Phelps' second daughter. Marion Tryphena was a year and a half older. I've often thought of how happy her parents must have been with these two beautiful daughters especially Harlan so late in life to have children for the first time. May was named for Mary Wilson a relative of Harlan's second wife, Jennie Wilson. Marion's middle name, Tryphena, came from Harlan's mother, Tryphena G. Davis Phelps. Harlan died when May was just over four-years-old and she remembered him mostly from pictures but recalled him fondly.

I remember seeing a will which included very little for the widow and her family. Two years after his death Anna married her cousin, John Oliver Hunt. Harlan was 40 years older and John was 7 years younger. May's half-brother, John Oliver Hunt, Jr. was born October 25, 1916. There were several pregnancies before and Anna had a very difficult time. Obviously, young John was the apple of everyone's eye and he was blessed with three mothers, Anna, Marion and May.

This is obviously a work in progress but I want to upload it to the site so that it won't lay languishing for another two years. Hopefully, I will find the time and the recollection to continue soon. In the meantime I have developed a photo show of her life.
