THE 17TH GEORGIA INFANTRY REGIMENT Pg. 6 "The 17th Regiment was a part of Benning's Brigate (Ft. Benning was named for him), Field's Division; Longstreet's Corps, Army of Northern Virginia. Gen. Benning and his command were with Longstreet and Lee at Appamattox 9 Apr 1865. The 17th Regiment consisted of Company A from Webster County, known as 'Webster Rifles.' Co. B was from Schley County and known as 'Schley Volunteers.' Co. C was from Muscogee County and known as 'Columbus Volnteers.' Co. D. was from Decatur County and known as 'Decatur Guards.' Co. E was from Mitchell County and apparently was simply known as Co. E. Co. F was from Muscogee County and known as Co. F. Co. H was from Harris County and known as 'Harris Bartows.' Co. I was from Stewart County and known as Co. I. Co. K was from Stewart and Webster Counties and known as 'Webster Confederate Guards.'" |
