Additional info:  Through the Kincannon connection, we believe William’s parents may have come from Pennsylvania, traveling down the Great Valley of VA to the Cumberland Gap and into Tennessee.  The Kincannons did so, as we learned, by tracing Madison B. Johnston’s wife’s ancestors.  We believe these pioneers travelled in groups, and often married within the group.  We’re looking for any connection to William.

Oral history says William came from Ireland with a brother and cousin with the British Army in the War of 1812. This must be wrong if his son was born in NH in 1803.  He went AWOL after reaching Canada and hid out near Black Mountain, NH.  Eventually, he stayed, one went south, one went west, and he never heard from them again.

Additional info: James Johnston, the patriarch of this family, and his wife, Margarite, died leaving several small children. The orphans were all adopted out, with Edward Daniel Johnston retaining his last name. He ran away from his adopted home and went to Kansas when still a teenager. He never saw his siblings again or really knew where they were living.   Our goal is to possibly find descendants of the other brothers of Edward Daniel.  We are having a difficult time finding any type of paper trail for James and Margarite, so we hope to find other relatives who might be able to assist in our search.  The children of James Margarite are as follows:  James, John, Thomas, Edward, William, Daniel, Margarite, Ellen, and Mary.(CEJ)

Additional info: My Johnstons left Scotland for Northern Ireland between 1607 and 1622 when James I sent loyal protestant subjects to set up a series of plantations there. My great great grandfather Thomas was known to mention that he was the cousin to George Johnston, Commander of the Rum Corp, first Fleet to Australia in 1788. ( I am very interested in proving this one way or the other).

Additional info: John Joseph Johnstone  born 1808 at Lockerbie, Scotland 1826, 1827, 1828 He lived at Dumfries Scotland.  At the age of 18 years he attended Endinburgh University  where he had a distinguished career being a medallist of his college. 1829 -  Aged 21 he was a medical practitioner (LRCS) Licentate of the Royal College of Surgeons. He commenced practice at HALTWHISTLE Scotland.  1835 -  He went to BRAMPTON, CARLISLE, CUMBRIA ENGLAND, where he carried on an extensive practice for 45 years, when owing to failing health and loss of sight, he retired from practice. He lived at “The Hollies” in Brampton England. 1860 -  When the 4th Cumbrian Volunteer Regiment was formed, he was appointed assistant surgeon, he was for many years the public vaccinator to the Brampton Union.  His obiturary says, “as a practiced surgeon there was no one better known in the country than Doctor Johnstone.” He was registed as a surgeon in 1829, then 21 years of age and was still registed as a medical practitioner until his death in 1892. 1892 Died 16th June 1892 aged 84 years. Married firstly ELIZABETH PATTINSON, she was the mother of ANDREW JOHNSTONE who came to Australia. Secondly he married Mrs AMELIA BARNSFATHER mother of John Joseph Johnstone’s stepson Robert Barnsfather. In his will, other children are mentioned namely; MARGARET, JESSIE, AMELIA, ELLA not known from which marriage. Seems Amelia is named after second wife. His Estate was 4,560 pounds 17 shillings and 11 pence {in 1892). He left 500 pounds to be divided amongst Andrew Johnstone’s children. John Arthur Johnstone was then 23 years of age and there were 6 (six) other surviving children of Andrew Johnstone.
