GIRD Biography #1 by Dianna Kindel MYERS

The following information comes from Diana K. Myers, who is a
Great-great-great grand-daughter of Anna Maria Gird Walker who
Was a sister of Henry Harrison Gird. The information came from
Family papers in her family's possession.

Henry Hattan Gird I (born circa 1745 in Ireland) and married in
Ireland. His wife was Charlotte Elizabeth Hines, of the gentry
Class of Dublin. Henry's family was very wealthy and came from
Wexford. He and Charlotte had:
Henry Hattan II b. c. 1770
John b. c. 1775
Isabella b. c. 1789
Maria b. after 1793
Eliza b.
Emily b.
Others ?
At the time of the rebellion in 1792, Henry's sons could not agree
On politics, so he and sixteen family members and slaves went to
America, chartering a boat to Philadelphia and bringing with them
$90,000 in gold! Gird's son, John, went back to Ireland to fetch
his little sister, Isabelle, and wrap up business there.

Henry H. I wanted to raise wheat for export in the New World, so
he bought a plantation on Stony Creek, near Winchester, Va. He
lived in Alexandria, Va. and the District of Columbia with his
family; he and his son, John, built four flour mills there. The
family went to an Episcopal church in Washington, D.C. However,
Gird became gay and extravagant and lost propriety. The wheat
failed and the mills were burned by the British in 1814.

Tradition says that Henry Hattan (sic) Gird I had three sons, but one
married a servant and went West, and was disinherited. The
daughters never married and lived with their parents in New York,
where Gird moved after the wheat mills were destroyed. They
inherited all Gird's possessions in his will (?).

Henry Hattan (sic) Gird II was born circa 1770, in Wexford, Ireland.
He was educated about business in London and came to America with
his father. He went into publishing and printing in New York City
and was a member of the firm Salisbury (or Stanbury?) and Gird.

Henry Hattan (sic) Gird II married, about 1800, Mary Smith Crane (her second
marriage). Shortly before Gird died, circa 1807, his wife's parents
moved to Litchfield, N. Y., possibly from Long Island, where Mary
grew up. Mrs. Gird took her children from Long Island, with their grandparents
in Litchfield, Herkimer Co., N. Y. after their father died. She later
lived in Utica, N. Y. where she died.

Mary Smith Crane was born 1772 and died 1864, the daughter of Richard
Smith and his wife, Mary Brush.
Henry Hatton Gird II and Mary had:
Henry Hattan (sic) III b. May 29, 1801
Richard b. circa 1803
Mary b. circa 1805
Edward b. circa 1807
