"McKee, Maria Gird, dau. of James and Jane Gird, b. at Captina, Ohio, May 12, 1832; d. May 31, 1924; m. William McKee, Nov. 21, 1850, who died Aug. 27, 1912; children, Ernest; Gird (dec); Walter A.; Roda (Scriggs) dec.; Emma (Racey); Flode; Mabel (Racey); sister Mrs. J. W. Van Cleve."
----------------------------
from the Records of Susan Kellar Ratcliffe,
the original obituary:
"Maria Gird McKee, daughter of James and Jane Gird, was born at Captina, O., May 12th, 1832, died Mary 31st, 1924, aged 92 years and 10 days. Was united in marriage to Wm. McKee, Nov 21, 1850, who preceded her to the Better Land, Aug. 27, 1912. to this union was born the following: Ernest and Gird, (deceased), Walter A., near Sharon; Rhoda McKee Scriggs (deceased); Emma McKee Racey and Flode McKee of the home, and Mabel McKee Racey of near Hoskinsville. There are eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren. One sister, Mrs. J. W. VanCleve of Los Angeles survives.
Mrs. McKee's character was one of the most beautiful. She was of a sunshiny, cheerful disposition. 'None knew her but to love her, Nor nanted her but to praise."
She had been a invalid for these many months, but through it all, this same cheerful disposition upheld her. She never complained, but everything that could be done by loving hands to alleviate her suffering was always just the right thing with her. Her chief delight was to know that her own household and every one was happy and contented. The words of Solomon are very applicable to her: 'Strength and honor are her clothing and she shall rejoice in time to come. She openeth her mouth with wisdom and in her tongue is the law of kindness. She looketh well to the ways of her household and cateth not the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blest.' This good woman will be greatly missed not only by her family and relatives but a great host of friends and neighbors. She leaves us the example of a good and noble life."

Augustus Gird is listed as follows:
Source: "Encyclopedia of Frontier Biography", Volume II G-O, by Dan L. Thrapp, The Arthur W. Clark Company, Glendale, California, 1988 (ISBN 0-87062-191-2) from Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley, California.
"Gird, A. K. Scout (d. 1877). Gird was described by Staton G. Fisher as 'a brave and good scout' who joined Fisher's scout company in Idaho for the 1877 Nez Perce campaign. Gird, said Fisher, 'was killed last fall in the Judith Basin (of Montana) by one, Major Reed, or perhaps, Read'. Fisher himself was a brave and reliable scout. Gird was also one of about 34 Bitterroot volunteers who fought in the Nez Perce War of 1877 in the battle of Big Hole, the night of August 9, 1877."
Stanton G. Fisher writes in article based upon his diary ("Journal of S. G. Fisher, Chief of Scouts to General O. O. Howard during the Campaign against the Nez Perce Indians, 1877." Montana Historical Society Contributions, Vol 2, 269-282 (1896)):
"A. K. Gird was a white man who joined my company. He was killed last fall (1877) in the Judith Basin by one Major Reed.. Gird was a brave and good scout".

"Murder in the Judith Basin
Mr. Wm. Gline arrived from the lower country on the 25th inst. and reported that about a week previous a man named Gurd (sic), of Deer Lodge county had been murdered by Major Reed, at the latter's ranch in Judith Basin. Gline had heard two statements regarding the murder. One that deceased had been shot by Reed while the former was running after another man, and the other story was that the murder was the result of a quarrel over a game of cards. It is said that Reed buried deceased near the ranch and had then started for Tongue river. Gline has gone to Helena, and will have the case brought before the authorities of Meagher county, within whose jurisdiction the murder was committed. - Benton Record. 30th ult."

"Judith Basin Murder
Further Particulars of the Killing of Gurd
Major Reed Completely Exonerated from Blamefrom the Benton Record, Dec. 17th.:
Messrs Bowles and Caruthers called at the Record on Wednesday, and gave the following account of the shooting affair in the Judith Basin, a report of which was published in our last issue but one, as received from Wm. Gline. It appears that deceased came to Major Reed's ranch in a semi-intoxicated condition, flourished a revolver and threatened to shoot not only Reed but several other inmates of the house. Gurd was a stout, heavy built man, and known to be an ugly customer when under the influence of liquor. He struck Reed in the face with a revolver, repeatedly put the pistol to his head, and compelled Reed to give him not only liquor but all the money in the till, and deceased tore the money in small pieces and threw it on the floor. Reed complied with all his demands, and in addition offered him a horse and saddle to leave the place, but finding he could not get rid of him wanted the other men to help him disarm deceased, but for some reason or other they did not offer to help. Reed states that he had a Henry rifle behind the counter and would have been justified in using it at an earlier moment, but the weapon was unloaded, and deceased had a revolver pointed at him nearly all the time. Deceased finally chased one of the men out of the room and around the house, and Reed followed with the rifle loaded. As Reed passed around the house, he met deceased who again covered him with his revolver. Reed at once raised his rifle and shot deceased dead. Bowles and Caruthers are willing to make affidavit to this statement. It is said that Reed offered to surrender himself to the Meagher county authorities, but the latter refused to take any steps in the matter."

The 1910 census of the Flathead Indian Reservation lists William Gird as the farm laborer employee of Rene Diome. There are several inconsistencies in this record; he is listed as being age 36, where he was really 24; his father is listed as being born in Virginia, where the correct birthplace was Ohio; his mother is listed as being born in Montana, where the correct birthplace is Colorado; he is listed as being born in Texas, where the correct birthplace was Montana. He is listed of being of 1/2 Indian blood. His tribe and that of his mother are listed as Pend Oreille and his father is listed as white. This tribe designation may not be correct. From the land records, it seems that he was a Flathead Indian. None the less, we believe that this entry refers to him because he is the only person in the state with the name of William Gird.

When They Built The Old Morris School Building
There Were Stepping Stones And an Incline On Fourth Street--Some
Recollections.
REMEMBER FRAME BUILDING?
Miss Bell Gird Was One of The Teachers, One "Pupil" Recalls--Good
Buildings Were Near RiverReading a story written by Frank J. Ryan, secretary of state, who recalled his boyhood days at the Morris school, has prompted another "pupil" to write some recollections of Leavenworth in the earlier days.
This "pupil" writes as follows:
"In writing of the Morris school, I wonder how many remember the frame building on the Fifth street side of those grounds, where two rooms were used. It was set rather high as Fifth street had just been graded. Miss Belle Gird was one of the teachers and I do not remember the other one. The building of the Morris school gave us ample opportunity to take dares in walking on the trestle work, it being all cellar underneath so it was a risky undertaking. Our first principals and teachers came down from the east, among whom were Professor Stowell, McVicker, Carmichiel, and Williams, while the three women instructors were Misses Porter, Gassett and Meade. Miss Meade afterward was married to Mr. Lewis Mayo. A normal school was started then to train teachers from our midst. Professor Wherrell was in charge.
Bella Zora moved to the Los Angeles area in 1885.
