This cemetery is located in Riverview, Florida. Directions to this cemetery, Hwy 301 S to Cone Grove Road, turn right, continue to the dead end and turn right, follow road until it dead ends also, Samford Cemetery is located on the left side of the road.

As I'm sure you can see by the entrance sign to the cemetery it is not being maintained. I was appalled at the appearance of this cemetery. My husband and I walked the entire cemetery and found graves with gopher holes dug into the sides, graves that are overtaken by grass and limbs from the trees, this cemetery is in desperate need of cleaning, as you will see from the photos. We also found one grave of a child that had been dug into, and found bones lying around the grave. We contacted officials as to the condition of this child's grave. What has happened to people that we no longer care about our past and no longer have the respect for our dead as we once did. My husband are trying to organize a clean up of this cemetery. If you or anyone you know are willing to participate in this effort, please contact me via email. I hope that the photos that I have taken will show the kind of shape that this cemetery is in and that some type of action needs to be taken to bring this cemetery back to what it should be.

This cemetery has had several names, originally it was called Duzenbury Cemetery for the family, which was one of the earliest in Peru. Family members are believed to have been buried there in the early 1850's. After some time it was change to Peru Cemetery, after the area that it was located in, Riverview being known as Peru, and then finally, to Samford Cemetery after A.M. Samford, a well known traveling Minister of the Gospel. A. M. Samford is buried next to Urban S. Bird, who both served as ministers for the Riverview Methodist Church.

One of the oldest cemeteries in Hillsborough County, and the first in Peru, it holds the remains of the area most prominent citizens. The following is a transcription of the cemetery done in 2000 by Sheila D. Taylor of Gibsonton, Florida. Her gggrandfather, Henry Moses Hewett is buried in this cemetery, as is several Buzbee relations.

The cemetery is not very well maintained, at the time of the transcription, some of the older stones were defaced. This transcription is protected by copyright and cannot be copied or used for any other purpose than genealogical.
