Margaret Higginbotham Richardson-Santos, 92; retired social work
supervisor/training instructor
Margaret "Marie" Higginbotham Richardson-Santos, 92, of Swarthmore, a teacher
and social worker, died Sept. 23 at Taylor Hospital in Ridley Park.
Born in Desoto, Mo., Mrs. Richardson-Santos was a member of the Class of 1927 at
Sumner High School in St. Louis. She was also a graduate of Stowe Teacher’s
College and the University of Pennsylvania. She was one of only three
African-Americans to graduate with a master’s degree from Penn at the time.
Mrs. Richardson-Santos was employed by Inter-Church Child Care Society as a case
work supervisor and student training instructor for eight years before her
retirement in 1970. Prior to that, she was employed by the New Jersey Board of
Child Welfare, the Philadelphia Department of Public Welfare and Philadelphia
Children’s Services.
She also worked as a teacher at the Carter G. Woodson School of Negro History
and Douglas University, both in Missouri.
Mrs. Richardson-Santos was a member of the Wesley A.M.E. Church in Swarthmore,
where she served as president of the missionary society and belonged to various
clubs.
She was also a member of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and the National Association
of Social Workers.
Mrs. Richardson-Santos loved to sing, dance and play the organ.
She was the widow of the late James Arcell Richardson, who died in 1972, and the
late Macario "Mike" Santos, who died in 1989. She was the daughter of the late
Henry Lewis Higginbotham and Ellen Bland and the last of nine siblings.
Survivors: Devoted companion, Dorrett Brown; three nephews, one niece, many
great-nieces, nephews and friends.
Service: 10 a.m. Saturday, Wesley A.M.E. Church, Swarthmore.
Visitation: 8:30-10 a.m. Saturday at the church.
Burial: Mt. Lawn Cemetery, Sharon Hill.
Arrangements: Hawkins Funeral Home, Philadelphia.

Lillian Mae Higginbotham Miller Was former Erie resident
Lillian Mae Miller, 94, of Bradenton, Fla., died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003.
She was born Feb. 22, 1908, in Fairmont, W.Va., daughter of the late Haymond and
Anna Burdess Higginbotham. She formerly lived at 816 German St.
She was preceded in death by her former husband, Joseph Vern Miller; a son,
Lavern Miller; a sister, Mabel Hartzel; and two grandchildren, Ronald and Eric
Miller.
Survivors include two sons, Ronald Miller and his wife, Patricia, of Bradenton,

James Silas Higginbotham (1921-2004) VA/PA (African-American)
James S. Higginbotham, 83, of Coraopolis, died Sunday, March
14 [2004], at his residence. Mr. Higginbotham was born Jan. 2, 1921 in Amherst,
Va., a son of the late Epoch and Rebecca (Watson) Higginbotham. 'Higgy' worked
for American Chem-Sol for many years until the company went out of business. He
was a school bus driver for Student Transportation of America. He was also past
commander of the Walter Robinson VFW in Sewickley. Survivors include three
daughters, Ashley Higginbotham of Raleigh, N.C., Tracy Higginbotham of
Woodbridge, Va., and Vanessa Higginbotham of Summerville, S.C.; one brother,
Epoch Higginbotham of Amherst, Va.; one sister, Polly Gumbs of New Jersey; and
several grandchildren. Arrangements were handled by Copeland's of Coraopolis.
Burial was at Coraopolis Cemetery.

Alice L. Higginbotham Dukes (1932-2004) PA
Age 72, of McKeesport, formerly of Pittsburgh, departed this
life November 24, 2004 at home, with her loving family by her side. She was a
daughter of the late Jasper & Mabel Higginbotham. Alice married Robert Dukes in
1951. In this union she had four children, Karen Belton with whom she resided,
Cheryl Bentley of Charleroi, Robert Dukes II of Pittsburgh & Allison Wood of
McKeesport. In addition to her children, she is survived by sons-in-law Leonard
Belton & Gerald Bentley; daughter-in-law Isabella Dukes; nine grandchildren; 19
great-grandchildren; sisters, Katherine Frazier & Josephine Higginbotham of
Wilkinsburg, Loraine Wilson of Chicago, IL & Betty Lou Johnson of Avalon;
brothers, Jasper of Hawaii, Thomas & Gerald of Pittsburgh; nieces & nephews & a
host of friends. Alice was a devoted wife,mother & Jehovah's Witness. A Memorial
Service for Alice will be held on Saturday, November 27 at 2 pm in the Longview
Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses on Dollman Rd., in Penn Hills. Interment is

Jane Ellen Higginbotham Alexander (1937-2005) WV/PA
Jane E. Alexander, 67, of Coatesville, died Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2005, at
home.
Born Feb. 27, 1937, in Nellis, W. Va., she was the daughter of the late Ira and
Annie Riley Higginbotham.
She was the wife of William Alexander of Coatesville.
Jane was office manager for Carmen Giacchino’s Automobile Dealerships in three
locations over a 30-year period. She also worked for C&G Oldsmobile in
Coatesville, Carman Lincoln Mercury in Wilmington, Del., and Castle Ford in New
Castle, Del.
She was affiliated with Wyebrook Baptist Church, and Coatesville Bible
Fellowship.
She was a member of Chester County FOP Lodge #11 Auxiliary of West Chester.
Jane was known at the family caregiver and opened her home and heart to family
member in need.
In addition to her husband of 50 years, Jane is survived by two daughters,
Debbie Dutter and husband, Butch, of Coatesville, and Cathy Green and husband,
Scott, of Coatesville; two sons, Rocky Alexander and wife, Tonna, of
Springfield, and Jim Alexander of Narvon; a daughter-in-law, Terri Alexander of
Coatesville; six grandchildren, Dan, Jeffrey, Amanda, Kaitlyn, Jennifer and
Nicholas; two brothers, Bob Higginbotham of Brandamore, and Butch Higginbotham
of Shrevesport, La.; and two sisters, Sarah King of Coatesville, and Joanne
Stotsenburg of Glassboro, N.J.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, Freddie, who died on May 6, 1990; a
brother and sister, Ira and Nancy Higginbotham.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 19, at Maclean-Chamberlain
Funeral Home Inc., 339 W. Kings Hwy. (Route 340), Wagontown, where visitation
will be from 10 to 11 a.m.
Interment will be in Upper Octorara Church Cemetery, 1121 Octoraro Trail,
Parkesburg.

Anna Catherine Higginbotham, 91, of Washington, died Saturday, August 18, 2007,
in Washington County Health Center following a lingering illness.
She was born January 20, 1916, in Washington, a daughter of John Sherman and
Bertha Lennox McNeal.
Mrs. Higginbotham worked as a custodian for Trinity School District and
Washington County Jail, as a waitress at Julia's Restaurant, and as a checker at
Fidel and Imperial Cleaners.
She was Protestant and enjoyed crocheting and crafts.
Surviving are a daughter, Catherine Schwering of Washington; a brother, John W.
McNeal of Canonsburg; four grandsons, William J. Schwering, Charles Edward
Schwering, Richard Scott Schwering and David Anthony; three granddaughters,
Helen Mayer, Cindy Bock, and Linda Perry; three great-granddaughters; and two
great-grandsons.
Deceased are a son, Walter E. Anthony; three grandchildren who died in infancy;
a sister, Bertha McCombs.
At the request of the deceased, burial was private in Mt. Prospect Cemetery.

LITITZ - Jane E. (Weikert) Higinbotham, 62, died Wednesday, November 19, 2008, at Lancaster General Hospital. She was the wife of Richard D. Higinbotham, who died September 5, 1975. She was born in Hanover, the daughter of Kathryn E. (Bream) Weikert of New Oxford, and the late Henry A. Weikert. Mrs. Higinbotham was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lititz and retired in 2007 from R.R. Donnelley & Sons in Lancaster. In addition to her mother, she is survived by son, Jon D. Higinbotham, and a daughter, Jennifer J. Suydam and her husband, Eric, all of Lititz; five grandchildren; and four brothers, William H. Weikert of Williamsville, N.Y., James H. Weikert of Harrisburg, Thomas H. Weikert of Clinton, N.C., and Michael H. Weikert of Leesburg, Va. She was predeceased by a brother, Dennis H. Weikert. Funeral services will be held Monday, November 24, 2008, at 2 p.m. from the Feiser Funeral Home, Inc., 302 Lincolnway West, New Oxford, with Pastor James Gable officiating. Burial will be in New Oxford Cemetery. A viewing will be held Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
