Funeral Services for Mrs. Martha Jane Ratliff, age 86, widow of the late Ben F. Ratliff of Rison, Arkansas, who died Thursday morning, at 2:30 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. M. D. Camp, of DeWitt, were held Friday at 2:30 pm at Mt. Zion Baptist Church near Rison, burial in the family lot by the Buie Funeral Home of Rison in charge. She was born in Rome, Georgia in 1859, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Higginbotham, pioneer residents of Georgia, coming to Arkansas when a small child. She made her home in Cleveland County the remainder of her life. Mrs. Ratliff was an active member of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church until her ill health detained her. Survivors are four daughters, Mrs. Maudie Beard of Long Beach, California, Mrs. M. D. Camp of DeWitt, Arkansas, Mrs. Carrie Ross of Tacoma, Washington, and Mrs. Gertrude Williams of Rison; six sons, B. B. Ratliff of Watson Chapel, Rev. J. E. Ratliff of El Paso, Texas, J. R. Ratliff, W. R. Ratliff, and J. L. Ratliff, all of Pine Bluff, one sister, Mrs. Delia England of Pharr, Texas, sixty-three grand-children, one hundred great- grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.

ALVARADO, Texas -- Rebecca Sue Higginbotham, 41, of Alvarado, Texas,
formerly of Mattoon, died at 4 p.m. Monday (Sept. 25, 1995) at her residence.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the First Southern Baptist
Church in Mattoon. A family graveside service will follow the memorial service.
Visitation will be one hour before the service.
She was born May 10, 1954, in Mattoon, the daughter of Ivan and Mary Stewart.
She married Sandy Higginbotham in 1985; he survives.
Other survivors include a son, Daniel Bright of Fort Worth, Texas; three
daughters, Jennie Wood, Lisa and Lois Higginbotham, all of Fort Worth, Texas;
two brothers, George Stewart of Terre Haute, Ind., and John Stewart of Germany;
four sisters, Mrs. Bill (Marylou) Anderson of Neoga, Mrs. Ron (Linda) Tanner of
Mattoon, Mrs. Tony (Kathryn) Sims of Windsor and Mrs. Ron (Sara) Croy of
Charleston; grandmother, Hazel Calhoun of Mattoon; and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother.

MARTINSVILLE -- Opal M. Higginbotham, 91, of rural Martinsville, died at
8:30 p.m. Sunday (Feb. 7, 1999) at Burnsides Nursing Home in Marshall.
Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the West Union Christian Church
with Pastor George Nika and Rev. Glenn Arbuckle officiating. Burial will be in
the Ohio Cemetery, northwest of West Union. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m.
Tuesday at the West Union Christian Church. The Prust-Hosch Funeral Chapel in
West Union is in charge of arrangements.
She was born Aug. 12, 1907 in Melrose Township, Clark County, the daughter of
John W. Alexander and Carrie C. Wood Alexander. She married Ormal Higginbotham;
he died in 1977.
Survivors include six sons, Clifford Higginbotham, Charles Higginbotham, Gene
Higginbotham, Floyd Higginbotham and Robert Higginbotham, all of rural
Martinsville, and Chester Higginbotham of rural Paris; two daughters, Hazel
Austin and Rosemary Thompson, both of rural Marshall; one sister, Mary Crumrin
of rural West York; two brothers, Dean Alexander and Everett Alexander, both of
Marshall; 32 grandchildren; 60 great-grandchildren; and eight
great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, a sister, three brothers, a son-in-law
and a grandson.
Mrs. Higginbotham was a homemaker. She was a member of the Five Points Christian
Church in rural Marshall and a member of the Friendship Club.
Memorials are suggested to the Five Points Christian Church.

died at 3:32 p.m. Friday (Aug. 16, 2002) at Burnsides Nursing Home in Marshall.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Prust-Hosch Funeral Chapel in West
Union with Pastor Penny Brown officiating. Burial will be in Ohio Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Monday and from 7 a.m. until service time
Tuesday at the funeral home.
She was born July 13, 1917, in Clark County, the daughter of William Albert and
Mattie I. Higginbotham Carpenter. She married John C. Lindley; he died in 1985.
Surviving are one son, Carl D. Lindley of rural West Union; one daughter, Sandra
Mackessy of Paris; 10 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and two
great-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.
Mrs. Lindley was a homemaker and had previously worked at Burnsides Nursing Home
as nurses aid. She was a member of the West Union Church of the Nazarene.

MARY HIGGINBOTHAM – 56, of Paris, and formerly of West Terre Haute, Ind., died
at 1:35 p.m. Thursday (July 28, 2005) at Union Hospital, Terre Haute, Ind.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday (Aug. 2) at the
Fitzpatrick-Pearce Funeral Home, with the Rev. Chris Wilbur officiating. Burial
will follow in Bethesda Memorial Park. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until the
service time Tuesday at the funeral home. The family suggests that memorial
donations be made to Faith in Action, with envelopes available at the funeral
home.
Mrs. Higginbotham was born April 8, 1949, at Terre Haute, Ind., the daughter of
Archie Baugh and Ada Isabell Thomas Baugh. She is survived by two daughters,
Tonia Lee of Spencer, Ind., and Angie Padgett of West Terre Haute, Ind.; two
sons, Mike Higginbotham and Danny Higginbotham, both of Terre Haute, Ind.; one
sister, Rose Spencer of West Terre Haute, Ind.; one brother, Gene Baugh of West
Terre Haute, Ind.; 10 grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles
and cousins. She was preceded in death by one brother.
Mrs. Higginbotham was a member and past president of American Legion Auxiliary
Post #501, and she was also a member of the Paris Veterans of Foreign Wars
Auxiliary.

Louise (Dodd) Nave Higginbotham, 83, died at 11:40 p.m.
Saturday, June 3, 2006, at Bethalto Care Center.
She was born Sept. 16, 1922, in Pensacola, Fla., the daughter of Merriman
Augustus and Dana Mae (Lawrence) Dodd.
She married Charles Nave on Aug. 30, 1941, and he died Feb. 7, 1971. She later
married John Higginbotham on Nov. 9, 1991, and he died Sept. 3, 1998.
She was a secretary for Alton Box Board for 27 years until she retired in 1985.
She was a member of the Holiday Shores Baptist Church and was a Happy Note
Singer for several years. She was a member of the Professional Secretaries of
America.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Barb and Fred Vogel of Bethalto; a
son and daughter-in-law, Darrell and Connie Nave of Columbia; three
grandchildren and spouses, Stephen Vogel of East Alton, Cathy and Terry Allen,
and Timothy and Lisa Vogel, all of Bethalto; five great-grandchildren, Stefani
Vogel, Leah and Samuel Allen and Nicholas and Shayna Vogel; two sisters, Mildred
Ballard of East Alton and Janet Fowler of Pensacola, Fla.; a brother, Ralph Dodd
of Houston; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by a brother,
Earl Dodd.
Visitation was Monday at Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto, where
services will be held at 10 a.m. today. The Rev. Wes Pinkley will officiate.
Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.

Sue C. Gaubatz, 55, of Mundelein, IL, passed away Friday, April 13, 2007
at the Lake Forest Hospital. She was Born August 24, 1951 in Chicago, where she
was a graduate of Morgan Park High School. She received her degree in education
from Northern Illinois University and was employed by Hewitt Associates in
Lincolnshire for the past 34 years. She was an active member of St. Mary of
Vernon Parish in Indian Creek where she was a Eucharistic Minister, former
member of the choir, lector and involved with several parish ministries. She was
also a member of Kirk Players, where she received the Hazen Award as the most
valuable player.
Surviving are her husband, Tom Gaubatz; daughters, Elizabeth (Andrew) Dannhorn
of Portland, OR and Rebecca Gaubatz of Mundelein; her mother, Evelyn
Higginbotham of Orland Park; sisters, Jean (Mike) Lucas of Plainfield, Linda
(Jim) Netherlands of Sacramento, CA; and her brother, Paul (Connie) Higginbotham
of Penn Valley, CA.
She was preceded in death by her father, William Higginbotham.
Visitation will be from 3-8 PM on Sunday, April 15, 2007 at St. Mary of Vernon
Catholic Church, 236 W. Hwy. 45, Indian Creek. Mass of Christian Burial will be
at 11 AM Monday, April 16 at the church. There will be a private interment

BARTONVILLE - Shirley J. Higginbotham, 73, of Bartonville died at 9:50
a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2007, at St. John's Hospice.
She was born June 11, 1934, in Canton, the daughter of Solomon and Mary
Mendenhall Emig. She married George R. Higginbotham on June 11, 1954, in Havana.
He preceded her in death on April 10, 1999, in Bartonville. She also was
preceded in death by two brothers, Ed and Charles Emig; and two sisters,
Margaret Beldin and Lula Vogel.
Surviving are a son, Todd (Michelle) Higginbotham of Springfield; a daughter,
Terri (Steven) Destrampe of Romulus, Mich.; six grandchildren; a brother, Ronald
Emig of Peoria; and several nieces and nephews.
Shirley worked as a retail clerk at Bogard Drugs in Bartonville. She also was a
volunteer at Wildlife Prairie Park, RSVP and the State Guardianship Office, all
in Peoria. She attended Bartonville United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 24, 2007, at
Davison-Fulton Bartonville Chapel, where visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m.
Thursday, Aug. 23, 2007. Burial will be in Swan Lake Memory Gardens in Peoria.
Memorials may be made to OSF Hospice in Peoria or St. John's Hospice in
Springfield.

DE SOTO - Minnie Opal Higginbotham, 87, formerly of De Soto, passed away
at 4:42 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, 2007, in Rehab and Care Center of Jackson
County in Murphysboro.
Gravesite services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, 2007, in De Soto
Cemetery, with the Rev. Chris Hottenson officiating. Friends are asked to go

Minnie was born Dec. 22, 1919, in Buncombe, to Anson and Lydia (Lambert) Gurley.
She was a homemaker and was of Pentecost faith.
Mrs. Higginbotham loved to quilt when she was able. She also enjoyed fishing,
but she especially loved to cook for her family.
She married Kenneth Higginbotham on Aug. 20, 1949, in Piggott, Ark., and he
preceded her in death Sept. 3, 2001.
She is survived by four children, Fayetta Chancey and her husband, Jack, Levieta
Fred and Charles L. McCarthy and his wife, Terri, all of De Soto and Mary Davis
and her husband, Charles "Monte," of Zeigler; 14 grandchildren; 20
great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Paula G. Buckholz; one son, Michael
Clifton McCarthy; one son-in-law, Norman Fred; one grandchild; two
great-great-grandchildren; three brothers; three sisters; and her parents.

George C. Higgenbotham (1933-2007) MO/IL
KINCAID - George C. Higgenbotham, 74, of Kincaid, and a resident of
Springfield for the past 30 years, died at 1:55 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5, 2007, at
Taylorville Memorial Hospital.
He was born May 7, 1933, in St. Louis, the son of George W. and Lela Phillips
Higgenbotham. He married Audrey Easthope on June 22, 1956; she preceded him in
death. His parents, a sister and two brothers also preceded him in death.
Mr. Higgenbotham was a pressman for The State Journal-Register for 12 years and
worked in the Baptist ministry for 10 years. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran,
serving during the Korean War. He was a former member of Lincoln Land Baptist
Church.
Surviving are three daughters, Sharon (husband, Kenneth) Fears of St. Charles,
Mo., Linda (husband, Nathan) Karlen of Alton and Carol (husband, Terrance)
Havard of Taylorville; four sons, George and Harry Higgenbotham of Kincaid and
John and Michael Higgenbotham, both of Springfield; nine grandchildren; 11
great-grandchildren; two sisters, Donna Trower of Kansas City and Virginia
(husband, Dennis) Nelson of Piedmont, Mo.; a half sister, Barbara Higgenbotham;
and three stepsisters, Sandra, Judy and Sharon; four half brothers, Ted Smith
and Tommy, Tony and Terry Higgenbotham; stepbrother, John Carpenter; and several
nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, 2007, at Staab Funeral
Home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, 2007, at Staab Funeral Home,
with Dr. Rod Mattoon officiating. Burial will be in Camp Butler National
Cemetery, where the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County will conduct
military honors.

Clarence Eugene Higginbotham (1917-2007) IL
MARTINSVILLE, Ill. — Eugene Higginbotham, 90, of rural Martinsville,
Ill., died at 1:10 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, 2007, in Heartland Nursing Center in
Casey. He was born Oct. 13, 1917, in Anderson Township, Clark County to Harry
Higginbotham and Bertha Ledermann Higginbotham. He was a retired farmer. He
married Mildred L. Fowler Higginbotham on Jan. 22, 1941, in St. Louis, Mo., and
she preceded him in death on Sept. 22, 2001.Survivors include two sons, Jerry D.
“Bub” Higginbotham of Brazil, Ind., and Larry E. “Pro” Higginbotham and wife
Sheryl of Sarasota, Fla.; four sisters, Norma Wilhoit of Marshall, Ill., Eleanor
Barkalow of Madison, Wis., Marjorie Moran of Cherokee Village, Ark., and Doris
Jenkins and husband Gene of Silver Springs, Mo.; two brothers, Russell
Higginbotham of Marshall, Ill., and Gerald Higginbotham of West Union; and
several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife;
one brother, Woodrow Higginbotham; one sister-in-law, Fairy Higginbotham; and
three brothers-in-law, William Moran, Rev. Gale Barkalow, and Maurice Wilhoit.
He served for a number of years on the ASC Land Services Board in Martinsville,
Ill. He was lifetime member of the Clark County Farm Bureau. He was appointed as
Justice of the Peace in April, 1949, and served a four-year term. Funeral
services are 11 a.m. CST Wednesday in Prust-Hosch Funeral Chapel in West Union
with Bro. Billie Ray Ulrey officiating. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. CST Tuesday,
and Wednesday 7 a.m. until service time in the funeral home. Burial is in
Harrison Cemetery in West Union. The family requests that memorial contributions
may be given to the Harrison Cemetery to assist with its upkeep.

MARSHALL, Ill. — Russell H. Higginbotham, 84, of rural Marshall, died at 6:55 a.m. Sunday, March 23, 2008, at his residence. He was born April 21, 1923, in Anderson Township in Clark County, to Harry Higginbotham and Bertha Ledermann Higginbotham. James Layton "Jim" Higginbotham Sr. (1939-2009) IL/TX
WHITEWRIGHT, TEXAS - James "Jim" Layton Higginbotham Sr., 70, of Whitewright, Texas died Wednesday, August 5, 2009, in Sherman, Texas after several heart attacks. He was born March 29, 1939 in Salem, to Orville A. "Bob" and Dorothy E. Markham Higginbotham. He was preceded in death by his father in 1942 and his stepfather, Ora Lee Guyott in 1959. He married Ann Louise Finke in 1959; they divorced and she survives in Forney, Texas. He then married Claire Bocardo on April 1, 2008; she survives in Whitewright, Texas. He is also survived by his three children, Jim (Joyce), Julee (fiance, Jeff Kirkpatrick), both of St. Louis and Jennifer (Darrell) Phillips of Austin, Texas; one grandson, Zairen Atlas Phillips; his four stepchildren; his mother, Dorothy Guyott of Springfield; brother, Larry Higginbotham of San Jose; two nieces, Lisa (Mickey) Bailey of Alabama and Angelina (Darrel) Williams of Pekin; two half brothers; one aunt, Fay Mack of Ohio; and several great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins. He was raised in Flora and graduated from Flora High School. While in Flora he was a member of McCabe Chapel (Baptist). He then graduated from SIU with a degree in accounting and then attended University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign Law program. While in Murphysboro he was a member of the Presbyterian Church. He was comptroller for Pautler Construction of Chester for many years. He then worked as a security guard in Texas. Later he worked as a furniture marker, which was one of his greatest loves. Cremation rites were accorded in Texas. Private services will be held in Illinois at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the family to purchase and plant trees at the family's home area.
